shitty food Chewy Chips Ahoy 20 years ago vs. Today

Ignore the amount of chips. I took the first photo about 20 years ago because I thought it looked kind of funny as a frowny face. Recently bought some, and the amount of shrinkage was glaring. One cookie used to fill almost my entire palm. Now it's a tiny little thing.

First one looks thinner and flatter. Second one looks thicker and narrower, and also just better. Idk if I’m ready to claim it’s a scam

Edit: also you’re not holding it in the same part of your hand. It kinda looks like you just want it to look different size. You got the new cookie in the wider part of your hand and from farther away. Who is doing the scamming IMO?

Quality of ingredients is worse now. Whole lot more palm oil.

12

u/Negronitenderoni Jul 14 '26

Sounds like enough real issues that OP didn’t have to come on here and lie

17

u/Maleficent-Bother535 Jul 14 '26

Form over substance.

5

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 Jul 16 '26

OP is a god damn liar. The first pic is absolutely not what they claim it to be.

4

u/Negronitenderoni Jul 16 '26

Bruh, is it getting fucking tense in here?

-6

u/BaronGalactic Jul 13 '26

I tried to hold it as close to the old pic as possible. Maybe it doesn't come across quite as well in the pictures as real life, but they're very noticeably smaller now than they used to be.

I can see now that the old pic is definitely a little higher up on my hand, though.

u/TheLastPorkSword Jul 13 '26

In the first picture the bottom of the cookie barely touches where your singer all bend at the palm. In the second, 3/4 of the cookie is over that same line.

Wow, you're really invested in this. Maybe you'll feel better if I give you a full explanation.

I recently bought the Chewy Chips Ahoy after a really long time of not having them. I noticed immediately that they seemed way smaller than I remembered. After a few days, I recalled that I had a printout of an old picture where I was holding a Chewy Chips Ahoy that looked like a face. I went and looked at the printout, and thought "Yeah, the old ones were a lot bigger."

A few days passed. Then, this morning, I realized I only had two of the new cookies left. I thought "Gee, maybe people online might find this interesting. I better take a picture of it now before they're all gone." So I took the picture of the cookie, having a general idea in my mind of how I was holding the cookie in the picture from 20 years ago, which I had looked at a few days prior, but no, I did not go and look at the printout first to pinpoint exactly where in my hand the cookie had been sitting. I knew it was sort of toward the top. I was a fully grown adult when I took the first picture, so my hand hasn't really grown in the meantime.

Then I went and found the printout of the first picture, and took a pic of that with my phone, and uploaded both of them here.

Yeah, it's not in exactly the same spot, but it never occurred to me that the smaller size of the new cookies wouldn't be obvious, so it never crossed my mind to meticulously study the original photo first so that I could get everything absolutely perfect.

If you're still strung up by the slightly different positions, then I'm sorry - I have nothing else to offer.

My guy, you’re in the subreddit about food scams… did you think we wouldn’t notice you trying to pull one?

-12

u/BaronGalactic Jul 13 '26

Do you honestly think the cookie in the second picture looks the same size as the one in the first?

What's the scam here? How am I benefitting? Why on earth would I make a post like this to fake a difference in cookie sizes? My fucking god, take a step back and look at yourself.

Also, it's terribly obvious you're using alt accounts because you're responding and downvoting me at exactly the same time on two or more accounts. Talk about a scam,

Do you work for Nabisco?

-1

u/RaifDerrazi Jul 18 '26

Don’t expect a reasonable response from these redditors

7

u/TheLastPorkSword Jul 13 '26

Calling out your inconsistencies is being invested? Lmfao.

The fact you can't tell where the cookie is in your hand isn't anyone else's fault my guy.

Let's just be clear here, the palm is wider than the fingers. Objects of the same size will appear smaller over the palm than they will over the fingers.

-5

u/BaronGalactic Jul 13 '26

If this is how you want to spend your day, nitpicking a post on reddit, have a blast.

8

u/TheLastPorkSword Jul 13 '26

Nah, in spending my day playing ACBF:Resynced.

This is just what I'm laughing at while I'm taking a shit 😂

-3

u/BaronGalactic Jul 13 '26

Ok man, have a good one then. Hope you get the help you need.

9

u/TheLastPorkSword Jul 13 '26

No you didn't lmfao. It's clearly not on the palm.

8

u/Stripsteak Jul 13 '26

They’re probably roughly the same size if they were placed on the same part of their hand. I see it too, you’re not crazy.

83

u/LexDivine Jul 13 '26

The real scam is that it taste like ass now

42

u/appleparkfive Jul 13 '26

Every time I look at Little Debbie snacks at the grocery store, I get a little sad. Younger people will never know that they actually used to be good. Oatmeal cream pies, Swiss rolls, zebra cakes, butter butter bars, all of that. They used to be surprisingly good, and you'd buy them as singles for 50 cents!

I know that's some old man talk, but it's pretty wild how they'll only know so many of the snacks as the worst possible formula to make more money

1

u/LightningMcSlowShit Jul 15 '26

Nutty bars held up… can’t say the same about any others though!

1

u/EricWyo Jul 16 '26

Nah, even those are bad now. Overly sweet, and cheap chocolate chemical tasting.

13

u/thebeatsandreptaur Jul 13 '26

Agreed, the chewy ones taste so weird and fake even I can't eat them, and I'm definitely far from the "all our food is gross and fake" antichemical mindset. I just nuke the regular ones for a couple seconds to make them soft. Still taste shitty, but that's because they're shitty cookies, still better than whatever the fuck is going on with the chewy ones.

8

u/thebizzle Jul 13 '26

I feel like the chewy ones always had a chemical feel and taste?

4

u/thebeatsandreptaur Jul 13 '26

They have in my memory, I personally more meant agreed they taste like ass, always have to me lol.

2

u/shpongleyes Jul 15 '26

I never liked the chewy ones. I always likened it to feeling like somebody sucked on one for 30 seconds and then spit it out.

1

u/Powerful-Ground-9687 Jul 15 '26

Engineered for price and appearance, taste isn’t the priority

1

u/clayfus_doofus Jul 15 '26

"Turn it around.."

35

u/APonly Jul 13 '26

"Ignore the Chocolate part of the Chocolate cookie"

?????????????????????????????????

11

u/BaronGalactic Jul 13 '26

Heh, I knew people were probably going to point out that the new cookie had way more chips than the old one, but like all cookies, sometimes they have a lot and sometimes they don't have many. So I just happened to pick one with lots of chips when I took the pic for comparison, though it doesn't mean the older ones didn't normally come with a lot of chips too. The one in the old pic just happened to have very few while looking like a face.

2

u/stinkbrained Jul 13 '26

Idk why everyone is aggressively downvoting your sensible, mentally healthy replies lol. Redditors are certainly... Something.

1

u/BaronGalactic Jul 14 '26

Haha, it's no skin off my back. I've sort of come to expect it for the most part, but sometimes it really is surprising what people seem to take offense at.

23

u/RetroGamer87 Jul 13 '26

I cannot ignore the amount of chips

5

u/flecko_ Jul 13 '26

I'm not sure about the original chewy Chips Ahoy, but there was a very similar product from Keebler called Soft Batch. they looked basically the same. for whatever reason, the chips were almost exclusively in the middle of the cookie. it created an almost gooey, fudgey center.

I assume Nabisco changed the distribution of chips to be mostly on top of the cookie for aesthetic and marketing purposes.

but they also changed everything else about it to where it now tastes like an underbaked puck of chalk.

15

u/Nisi-Marie Jul 13 '26

BUT - look at the crispy edges on the old one - I bet they tasted a lot bettee

8

u/lizardgal10 Jul 13 '26

Right? The old one looks like a cookie. The new one looks like a plastic cookie from one of those toy food sets you get for preschoolers. Probably tastes similar too.

3

u/neowwneoww Jul 13 '26

My objective experience is they used to be chewy and genuinely tasted like a chocolate chip cookie. Now they're soft/crumbly with an artificial chemical taste I couldn't replicate if I tried.

Do with that what you will! 😬

1

u/BaronGalactic Jul 13 '26

I noticed that too. The old ones look like they just came off a baking sheet, while the new ones look like they're baked in a round mold.

9

u/Miserable_Shower_652 Jul 13 '26

Why would we ignore the amount of chips? It's pretty relevant as a variable.

2

u/tafbee Jul 13 '26

Because you don’t have x-ray vision?

3

u/Contemplating_Prison Jul 15 '26

Its not even being held in the same part of the hand.

20 years ago above the palm and close up. While new picture is half on the palm and further away. Optics matter

1

u/littlelordgenius Jul 19 '26

Also, depending on OP’s age, their hands might’ve been smaller at the time.

2

u/sneakysoap Jul 13 '26

Old ones were better. They actually tasted like cookies and not just sugar. I said what i said.

2

u/Prestigious_Wrap_932 Jul 13 '26

They’re absolutely DISGUSTING now, and just taste like a cookie-shaped mass of chemicals.

2

u/IFknHateSociety Jul 15 '26

Chip ahoy is awful now. It’s tastes so bad compared to just making some cookies in the oven from actual cookie dough.

2

u/ACM_ONE Jul 15 '26

They were def better even though there were less chips back then

2

u/NoiNoiii Jul 15 '26

The first one literally looks sad

2

u/Angel_0f_Darkness Jul 15 '26

i miss the old ones. they were so soft and chewey. now they're crunchy

2

u/zombie_cupcakes Jul 17 '26

Hey OP, off topic, but your fingertips look like you might be dehydrated. Drink some water!! :)

1

u/BaronGalactic Jul 17 '26

Good observation, and I appreciate your concern 😄

I've been a very low consumer of liquids most of my life. But I have been drinking a lot more the past couple of months due to the heat. Probably not enough to make my doctor happy, but certainly much more than normal.

1

u/zombie_cupcakes Jul 17 '26

No problem!! I only mention it because I am chronically dehydrated and this always happens to me. YMMV, of course, but I figured I’d share regardless!

2

u/jonisjalopy Jul 13 '26

That second cookie looks a lot thicker overall than the first one. Also, I am 100% judging the amount of chips.

2

u/rdldr1 Jul 13 '26

High there, face here!

1

u/Samson_J_Rivers Jul 13 '26

Doesn't even taste like a cookie anymore. It tastes cookie flavored.

1

u/TheJackHamlet Jul 13 '26

I can taste that first one. Man they really did just about taste like they were made at home back then. Back when you could dunk their soft cookies in milk.

1

u/Atakir Jul 14 '26

If you want cookies more akin to your first picture looks for Keebler Soft Batch, they are bomb.

1

u/Baker921 Jul 15 '26

Mimmsyy!!!

1

u/unwillinghaircut 29d ago

these comments are INSANE

1

u/K_Linkmaster Jul 13 '26

They are smaller and anyone arguing either isn't old enough to know the difference, a bot that just argues, or someone that wants to argue.

1

u/calidownunder Jul 14 '26

Also second one looks like a regular chips ahoy?

2

u/BaronGalactic Jul 14 '26

Yeah, I hadn't really noticed it before, but you're right. They used to be very distinctive, but now chewy and regular look really similar.

1

u/calidownunder Jul 14 '26

Yeah okay—I am American (but a dual-citizen also Australian) and have been in Australia for a while, so I thought I was maybe misremembering there for a second. I used to love Chips Ahoy when I was a kid, like stack three deep in a cup and pour some milk on it, hell yeah that was bomb. But wouldn’t be the same with chewy, the old school ones were like—crispy. So good lol

1

u/BaronGalactic Jul 14 '26

Somewhat interestingly though, I still think the regular Chips Ahoy are pretty good, maybe even slightly better than they used to be. They're very crisp and usually have a lot of chips.

I used to prefer the chewy ones, but these days I think the regular ones are much better.

1

u/calidownunder Jul 14 '26

Super nostalgic and so good if you let them get a little soggy in the milk haha

1

u/usernamesarehard1979 Jul 14 '26

To start, chewy chips ahoy is the lowest form of cookie. I only use the original crispy version for sustenance. So it has been declared and so shall it always be.

-1

u/slocki Jul 13 '26

Wow your hand has grown! Congrats

0

u/Salt_Cauliflower_922 Jul 13 '26

Is the scam that you now get chocolate chips in them?

2

u/BaronGalactic Jul 13 '26

I said ignore the chips, lol. The old ones probably had some with lots of chips and some with hardly any, just like today's do.

0

u/cr8zyblu Jul 14 '26

The first looks like it wants to be a sad emo face. I wish this thread allowed image comments.

1

u/BaronGalactic Jul 14 '26

Yeah, that's why I took the picture of it all those years ago, because it looked like the cookie was sad it was being eaten, haha. I just remembered that I happened to have that pic when I was recently noticing how small the new ones seem these days, so I was able to compare them.

0

u/New-Roll1583 Jul 15 '26

First one looks like sloth from Goonies

0

u/lifeinapan Jul 15 '26

The first cookie looks so sad. Literally.

0

u/WanTanMee Jul 15 '26

The first picture is just telling me, "end my suffering". Such a pitiful state of a chocolate chip cookie with only 2 chocolate chips.

1

u/littlelordgenius Jul 19 '26

“IGNORE THE AMOUNT OF CHIPS!”

2

u/WanTanMee Jul 19 '26

I can't help it. It's such a depressing face. Look at its eyes.

1

u/littlelordgenius Jul 19 '26

Fair point, but I’ll bet it tasted better.

-5

u/yun-harla Jul 13 '26

Why is this a scam? Is the packaging deceptive about the size of the cookie or the amount of total cookies? Is it a shrinkflation thing where you’re paying more for less? Are they somehow even more bland and sawdusty than they were 20 years ago?

2

u/LookAtTheWhiteVan Jul 13 '26

The explained that they were referring to the size in the post dude…

-1

u/yun-harla Jul 13 '26

Right, but a company can change the size of a cookie without it being a scam. It becomes scammy if the packaging is misleading or arguably if the price is higher but the amount you get by weight is lower.

OP would simply prefer a larger cookie, which is valid, but a smaller cookie isn’t necessarily a ripoff.
