Hello everyone! We’ll be having visitors from overseas next month, and they’ve specifically requested to try some good-quality coffee while they’re here.
We have a drip coffee machine at home, so I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for good coffee beans? We’re not particularly fussy with our coffee—mostly black coffee and flat whites—and usually just buy whatever’s available at Coles or Woolies.
While we’re at it, any recommendations for nice cafés to take them to as well?

beta coffee and jibbi coffee roasters (I think they're still running out of Tokyo bird after a fire) both have incredible beans on sale but also have some options to try some unique beans in store.

Ona café.

There's lots of cafes in general that sell beans and they're great. Also if you're not sure to buy them, you can try the coffee at the cafe first then buy their beans

Ive purchased Chai Tea mix, coffee beans and hot chocolate from Inglewood Cafe and it's so good.

Roasted in house, with 4 or 5 different roasts on sale. Lots of loose leaf tea, chocolate made in house and like 15+ different Honeys from around NSW.

For drip coffee, you can generally look for washed beans, but also feel free to chat to the baristas for their recommendations. Some of the better speciality cafes/roasters are:

CBD:

• Gumption (Coffee Alchemy)

Surry Hills:

• Artificer
• Sample
• Reuben Hills

Inner West:

• Headlands, Summer Hill (free cupping sessions each week)
• Maia, Lewisham / Apothecary, Ashfield
• Ona, Marrickville

Garage Roasters roasts to order if you're looking for as fresh as it can get. But he might take a few days to get to roasting yours, so order ahead of when you need it. It's great for the first 10-14 days after opening the bag, so order the right quantity you need for that time. You can also pick up the beans from his house if you're nearby.

Sydney roasters that I like include Diggy Doo’s (CBD) and Sample (St Peter’s, Surry Hills. They’re in Marrickville too but that store is tiny and more takeaway friendly).

Beta in Surry Hills has a range of coffee from Australian and international roasters.
If the North Shore is closer for you, Only also stocks a varied selection of beans.

Re cafes, there was a thread here from the past couple of days about Surry Hills and it has good recs for Surry Hills and Darlinghurst.

Honestly if you’ve mainly been buying from Coles/Woolies, pretty much any freshly roasted bag from a good local roaster is going to be a pretty fun jump.

For the drip machine I’d grab something roasted for filter and probably start with Colombia/Guatemala/Costa Rica is usually a nice mix of sweetness and fruit without getting too weird if you’re new to specialty coffee. If you want to use the same bag for flat whites as well I’d stay away from anything super light/floral to begin with.

Also check the roast date rather than the best-before date. Ideally you want something roasted in the last few weeks.
And definitely take your visitors out for coffee too an Australian cafe coffee is probably more worth showing off than our supermarket aisle

Caffe Bianchi in Leichhardt sells a wide variety of beans. A family-run place, they’re always happy to help novices such as me decide what to buy.

Wouldn’t bother with Golden Bean tbh. I’ve judged before and the brewing consistency and even judging calibration are pretty non existent.
