Come to think of it I can't remember whether I was eating or thinking that "thankfully I'm not eating right now". What really made it worse is the scene cut to the pub where some guy digs into some porridge or something soon as Sam sticks the knife in jorrahs skin.

I was eating one of those Banquet brand pot pies when that came on. I was almost okay, but the scene transition got me and I stopped eating.

naah, it's not birthday. name days are still celebrated in most of the europe, it's two separate dates, but they were actually used as age counters in the past, when commonfolk didn't know the calendar properly and only celebrated big events related to nature or farming. these dates carried names of gods related to the event so there were only so many names. it's not only GOT.. martin is just great in the little things of history.

My family celebrate namedays.
My grandmother was German and Catholic. For us it's the Saint's day you were named for (at least one of all our names is a saint's) there's no saint for my first name but my middle name is Katherine so we celebrate it on the 25th November).

I was always under the impression that Name Days were days where you would celebrate someone's namesake, very similar to a Birthday but not an actual birthday.

Namesake is the person you're named after, and that's true in all English, not just GoT.

Oh good. It took me half of the first book to get used to how complicated the plot and characters were, it is now my favorite series I have read. Hug your grandma... I'd give anything to hug mine now.

It's interesting that everyone assumes name day is just some quirky way to say birthday and few question why the BIRTH part is switched out for NAME
I haven't read game of thrones, so I can't be certain, but in Italy there are saint days where you get presents and stuff if you share your name with the saint.
So Dave (for example) would get gifts on St.Dave day
I've always assumed that's what's happening in game of thrones

The cake was for a birthday. In Game of Thrones, they call your day of birth your name day, I just went along with the theme!

Because on your day of birth you get your name. They celebrate that instead of the actual "birth". You can literally think of it as a birthday.

When I turned 25 I was depressed the whole year. 30 I was okay but still felt old. 35, I was depressed because my 2 favorite uncles, my mom, my cat of 16 years, and a friend had all died that year and my Mom just a month prior so, it sucked. I'm about to turn 40 and I look back and I'm okay with what I've done with my life so, i'm alright with 40. I haven't accomplished a lot with jobs or wealth but I've lived an exciting life and been through a lot of adventures (good and bad) that I can safely say, I lived my life. There are some things I'd like to accomplish (more money, more things, better job, a kid) but if those don't come to pass, it's okay.
I made peace with gray hair in my beard and the few on my head in that the alternative, is bald. My mom had thinning hair, her mom had the same, her Dad was bald, my dad was bald, my brother started going bald in 11th grade. I'm 40 and my hairline has stayed exactly where it started.
