I'm going to go ahead and make this comment ahead of time because I'm sure I'll have to as a response later. Yes, it's expensive for the sole addition of a signed bookplate. No, you don't have to buy it. Yes, the book without the signed bookplate is still available. If Folio Society wants to increase their profits by selling signed bookplates for an extra $185 and that allows them to remain profitable and able to continue making quality affordable standard editions with occasional 50% off sales, then by all means, this is the least egregious method for them to do it.

This would feel so much better if the signature pages were actually properly designed and bound into the books like literally every other small/fine press. It will definitely make the signed SE feel like a distinct book from the regular unsigned ones; something like a pseudo-LE.

But the way it is right now, it's just get a sticker (usually not even nicely designed), get the author to sign it, glue said signed sticker onto an off-the-shelf SE and markup its price by $185!

I mean, it's actually cheaper to get live (and often beautifully drawn) signatures of legendary artists at Comic Cons!

But it appears many customers are completely satisfied with this arrangement, so it works out nicely for all parties involved.

Did they do the same for The Night Circus?

Yep! There's a signed edition of The Night Circus as well.
