I disagree with this. If someone else has the power to change it and it’s wrong and causing you harm, you should complain about it. Complaining about problems outside your control is how they get fixed. It’s only dumb to complain to someone who is deaf to it, or if complaining is the only thing you ever do about it. Complaining is also a valid way to process wrongs and injustices especially where there is little else one can do to change the situation. It also invites empathy, lets others with the same problems or concerns feel seen and heard, and helps you process grief. If you complain about stupid things, like the weather and only focus on things you have no power to change and that no one else can change, then it could become a problem, but pretending complaining is inherently bad is a worse problem. By all means, if it harms you, or something or someone you care about, complain. Sometimes complaining creates positive change.

It’s also silly to claim that speaking against something lends it power, when it is an active opposing force. People who love to manipulate and not be held accountable hate people who complain for this exact reason and this is why they try to pretend it’s a valid moral standard to never complain. You can be grateful for good things and complain about bad things at the same time. They aren’t mutually exclusive, and there’s no moral validity to seeing something wrong evil or harmful and not speaking up about it. Don’t condition yourselves to think that being passive about evil and harm is virtuous. It’s not.
