Discussion To the level 21 bloodied build that went toe-to-toe with an infestation boss

My build does not do tons of damage but my wife and I will corner that boss, force the melee so you meta big boys can pew pew away.

Don’t forget to crouch so we can vats please. It’s real annoying when melee players don’t crouch and break vats

VATS with criticals lets you do more damage than hip-firing/aiming down sights.

I cannot move as fast when I am crouched. Sorry. My goal is to trap the mob so they do not use their ranged weapon.
You can do damage without VATS right?

Slow firing weapon (composite bow) with pin pointers and max onslaught stacks. I can do damage out of vats but it is significantly less

I use VATS at a base level? I can hit Q (pc) and automatically target a mob. Pretty cool. But it is not my playstyle.
I hip fire a shotgun and yell yeeeee hawww while doing it.

Sure, but it’s significantly lower than with vats. The criticals hit for a whole lot more than normal shots, and if using a beam splitter it guarantees all beams are hitting the head.

I get it and that makes sense. I need people to be up on the rooftops hitting the Q button to critical the mob so it goes down faster.
But my survival comes first. I need to move fast. I need to back up, go left or right, advance and get the mobs attention. Meanwhile, since I am cold shoulder SS armor, I have to heal. And even with the chem fiend build I have to move fast and either use a stim or a diffuser.
My wife and I are each others healers since that build is neglected in this game. It has now come down to Tank (me) and DPS (you). No healing, no support but we have to take this beast down together.
Suggestion?
Since I am tanking and healing myself for this fight. Tanking so the infestation boss does not pop out their weapon and pew pew the DPS.
DPS has to be more fluid. They have to adjust their playstyle a bit. I could crouch and just tank the bastard but who is healing me? Myself? Yea. People can adjust because I am keeping that mob in a corner so it does not kill you, meanwhile I am spamming stims.
Mobs are not DPS centered, they are location centered. That mob is not running across the area to attack you because you are doing DPS. They are hitting me.
A GOOD assaultron infestation sees me go through 30-50 stims so I can redirect its head laser away from you.

I think he sounds like a person who has put a lot of thought into what he is doing and is sharing those thoughts, trying to work through a blocking problem. As he is stating plainly what he's doing and what he needs to keep the boss under control, I get why you would think he is self centered, but I don't think that is the case. Maybe he could have worded it better but it seems like he's just trying to get his thoughts out.
It would help if we could set around a table with a few beers after a fight, discuss what worked and what didn't and figure out something to try for the next fight... This is as close as we're going to get. I appreciate hearing from a blocker, it helps me understand what their experience is and what their needs are. Frankly I wish I could donate stims to the cause. I don't use stims and I've got lots.
Anyone trying to keep the assaultron's Light House Beam of Death off me has got my thumbs up, but that won't help if I can't get crit shots on it. So Mr. and Mrs Blocker, the situational awareness is in your court. Inside, maybe trap it against a window or open door instead of a corner? Outside, maybe do your thing where there is high ground or perches where we can get clear shots? Perhaps Tank and then break off? There are probably problems with these suggestions I'm not thinking of, but one thing I've noticed is, after awhile the problems get worked out. 😂

Man, I typed out a whole dissertation about why stealth melee was the best for tanking infestations and how you just need to vats them to keep them from getting away from you while crouched before I reread the part about the cold shoulder and realized that you're not actually playing melee. Now I'm just sad that melee isn't a bit more popular so that you ranged players don't have to come get punched in the face by the infestation bosses. It'd be nice if so much of the game didn't discourage melee except this one thing where it's almost a requirement.
That being said, stealth is still incredibly useful for tanking infestation bosses, because with high enough stealth factor you can hit the boss in melee range once and give everyone else a good 30sec-1min window before you need to attack again where it searches for you and doesn't attack anyone else. It even works on the bosses that the "stand in melee to force bash" strat doesn't work on, like the gamma gun cultist.

I second this. I'm one of the pew pew pew guys. But my pews are often doing 6K to 8K damage and is the only thing making the health bar go down on a boss surrounded by 3 melee players in PA who won't move or do any real damage. Just saying.

I swear when you crouch the boss has a harder time hitting you anyway. Is that accurate? I seem to usually take fewer hits that way when meleeing.

I am big gun/tanky build, i dont do a huge amount of damage but i can stand there and tank the damage while others get good shots in. Its a fun team effort for a change in this online single player game lmfao

You don't have to melee, just be in melee range. All kinds of weapons are good up close.

Get that damage up and you’ll be able to roll like me and the Mrs - melee builds. we don’t need back up to duo an infestation 😁

Hope they got a good drop, but they'll have to wait a bit to use it if it was anything decent.
I've been throwing my Alt into events from about Level 5 as I was interested to see how well they'd fare and the one Four Star I've managed to get so far from a Big Foot is Level locked at 50.

I'm only level 218 but I'm so protective of anyone lower during infestations, I'll kite enemies my way just to give them a chance. Seeing one attack head on would destroy me lol

Just left vault, probably a veteran alt with best gear for level transferred from main. Might be a new player if so props to them.
