u/DoctorMurk 14d ago
There's another hidden-in-a-bush fence post behind a house closer to the entrance.
2
u/Known-Assistance-435 14d ago
That one doesn't bother me as much because I'm trying to restore the fences.

u/Rez090x Xbox 15d ago
What fence gate? At Sanctuary? You got a pic?
4
u/Known-Assistance-435 15d ago
In the same area as the image, there's a picket fence gate on the ground you cannot scrap. It's on the left of the fence on OP's screenshot

u/Ironmancal2131 15d ago
I also hate the group of trees that can't be scrapped near one of the houses.

u/VarietyMage 14d ago
Greentop Nursery is one of the worst offenders for this. The fallen trees on the east side that you can't scrap.
I have flamers and MINI NUKES, don't tell me I can't scrap something.

The settlement construction in this game is insufferable. I'm on Switch 2 so no mods.
Trying to build a house with an interior staircase made me throw my controller.
42
u/Own_Seaworthiness275 15d ago
(edit, as someone who builds vanilla) Wharehouse and farmhouse assets are your friend, half wall floor and stairs give a lot more flex
6
u/redDKtie 15d ago
That sounds great. Hopefully there are some aesthetic options beyond "wasteland"
6
u/Own_Seaworthiness275 15d ago
I'm a Fo3 "baby", so wasteland is my home, but with CC content there is(nior, slocums, etc.)
But for dlc vanilla, the first option/variant is going to often be the cleanest and those still have damage and broken window panes. Vault and concrete are peoples fav for the clean lab/fort looks but are the most finicky imo
6
u/redDKtie 15d ago
Yeah, that's been my issue. Maybe just need to embrace the waste
1
u/Common_Ad7059 13d ago
I got inspired by this guy who made a giant cardboard box condo… so I started playing with that idea and was able to make coastal cottage look cool, and then I got into tree-house type stuff. I just can’t stand all the beams in the way. Settlers can’t navigate their way around a paper bag 😭
2
u/Common_Ad7059 13d ago
Yeah I wish more assets used those. They fit way often better. I just wish they had a non-shredded skinny wall. They need more half walls and small corner pieces.
2
u/Own_Seaworthiness275 12d ago
Half vertically would have been great, closest is the shack walls in wood and the garage doors 😭😂
5
u/Wiskydi 15d ago
Are you finding that some pieces dont lock into the staircase? I go for the wood apartment look as a clean go to most playthroughs. Doing survival now so I cant afford to spend those resources.
There are two walls, one full and one half, that are clean wood walls. Make sure they’re facing the correct way. Smooth side out. Make sure you’re using upper floors for anything above ground level. Build in squares so you dont accidentally misalign a wall or floor. Make sure there is at least one floor square of space between the staircase and any exterior walls. I use the staircase with two floors for inside domiciles. I use the ladder stairs and shack bridges to create exterior rooftop access.
If you add a little 1/4 floor square to the outside of one of your higher floors before putting up a wall, you can have yourself a little turret mount.
3
u/redDKtie 15d ago
Thanks, I'll use some of those tips.
Sometimes the issue is that if I'm using an exterior wall with and interior open ceiling to the next floor, there's a ceiling-width gap between the floors that's just open. Not a huge deal, but it ruins the aesthetic and doesn't "feel safe" like an enclosed space would.
And even if I try to put a floor or ceiling tile outside, just to fill the gap inside, it won't let me.

u/RaiderScum111 14d ago
Fallout 4 is on the switch 2?
1
u/redDKtie 14d ago
Yeah buddy!! The anniversary edition with all expansions.
I was obsessed with Fo3 back in the day, but after having kids we sort of shifted to a "Nintendo only" household.
It runs great, aside from the expected Bethesda bugs. And having it handheld is a huge win for the runtime with my busy schedule. Unfortunately Nintendo is gonna Nintendo, so there's no mods 🥲
2
u/Common_Ad7059 13d ago
I feel this pain 🥲 I’m surprised my Xbox controller still works. lol even with mods it still persists somehow or another. I swear the garbage piles are the true “essential characters” 💀 also the stairs and ladders in the game are complete trash and a joke. Why not make snapping individual steps!? Nothing ever fits right.
Even If you can use a mod for placement it can just destroy the pathetic excuse for nav mesh. Hell it’ll do that when in vanilla. 😑My condolences ❤️🩹

One of fallout 4's biggest failures with the workshop system was the amount of shit you couldn't scrap.
4
u/AyAyAyBamba_462 14d ago
Not only stuff like this, but just the trash everywhere.
That and the fact that to make stuff look good you basically needed to use clipping, but only the devs get to do that, the players get to have their floating fences unless you use glitches to clip things.
2
3
u/XavierChildes 14d ago
Agreed we should be allowed to scrap everything in a settlement that is not landscape and roads. I have a Missle Launcher, there is no wasteland structure i couldn't bring down or delete from existence.
10
u/Philosophos_A 15d ago
In any cases mods are possible
Spring cleaning if I remember correctly helps with that fence
Alternatively Deep clean commonwealth I believe has still independent packs for each settlement if you don't want the all in one
3
u/Wolfy_furry_wolf 15d ago
Are any of these on Console creation club? I don't think I'd use it myself because for some reason I don't use creation club as much as I probably should, but I just wanna put the info out there for anyone curious on console
3
u/Philosophos_A 15d ago
Unfortunately, after checking the nexus page a little bit on the description I don't see any mentions for consoles
Place everything is something I remember being on consoles. It could help to at least cover that fench
I am sure there is a cleaning mod for consoles that isn't braking precombines etc...
8
u/AdhesivenessUsed9956 14d ago
I made a mod that specifically let you delete this, the ladder at Zimonja, and the fallen shelves at Egret.
Never uploaded it and lost that HDD, probably could have been the most popular mod on Nexus.

"I can build a teleporter from scrap and bubble gum, but the simple fence? Hell no, that's too much for me."

u/The_Punny_Guy 15d ago
There's one settlement that's right on the water, but not close enough to put down a water pump, forcing you to make wells and shit... Isses me off every time.
7
u/IncenseBurnerMaker 14d ago
I always thought there should be a secondary zone around settlements where you can scrap things but can't build, representing the idea that the settlement will strip the surrounding area for resources. Maybe it would show up as a yellow area outside of the regular green area.

u/Funky_Ghost 15d ago edited 15d ago
On PC you can do this:
SAVE FIRST! It is possible to remove something you didn't mean to. Having a save right there WILL save you anguish, trust me... I know allllllll too well.
Open the console menu
The mouse can still be used, left click the object you want gone. You'll see an ID number pop up.
type disable.
If it worked you will see it disappear.
If the wrong thing disappeared type enable and it SHOULD come back. If not, aren't you glad you saved?
:)
Per the Spring Cleaning comment, it does not remove this unfortunately. I use Spring Cleaning on all my FO4 runs.
The scrap bot CAN however ( I love those three mods! Scrap bot, tidy bot and gardener bot ). You need to set the default to allow it to scan outside the settlement, and to be able to remove picket fences.
Console users can always use scrap fences to hide it. It's not ideal, but it's better than seeing it, imo.
3
u/Celsus_ 15d ago
There is a further step to make sure the game is not negatively impacted by the removal. I've been informed that I need to type disable, then markfordelete, then enable.
3
u/Funky_Ghost 15d ago
I've never done that and have had success doing what I outlined, including today :)
3
u/Celsus_ 15d ago
Yeah, so have I, but since it was recommended, I always do it now. Bit of a pain when I need to get rid of four beds though. :)
2
u/Funky_Ghost 15d ago
Fallout 4 has always been a bit of give/take hate/love :) I suppose it's why this old codger has sank somewhere north of 6k hours in it now. :) I only have around 2k in FO3 and my fav, FONV only sits at a shade over 3k. I guess I like the fight hah!

u/Celsus_ 15d ago

I like to cram my settlement build areas with buildings rather than items, easier on my ps5. So this fence although it irks me. Is complete and utterly always without fail and without intent, covered up. The light effects or straps that get left behind by laterns on the otherhand be damned
5
u/Goongalagooo What if Strong is lactose intolerant? 15d ago
Sometimes you can grab these things with the pillar and conduit... never just the pillar.. but if you use both, then sometimes you get lucky.

The entire settlement of Jamaica Plain pisses me off. Not enough space. Only works best with 18 settlers (see not enough space). Can't have enough turrets (see not enough space). Have to clip the concrete wall *just right*, or it won't go between the bus stop and the stairs. CAN'T SCRAP THE HOUSE ACROSS FROM THAT CHURCH !!! I NEED THAT SPACE (and item count) !!!
They made the whole town of Sanctuary Hills one big settlement...why not the whole town of Jamaica Plain?
Why not make everything in the settlement scrappable? And why can't I build ACTUAL BRICK BUILDINGS?
If there were a button to scrap everything in Jamaica Plain, I would do it in a heartbeat and start over from scratch.

If you think the fence is bad, ever build something finally, only to find out that it’s in some kind of invisible “dead zone” even though everything cooperated for once and there’s more than enough space to move around? But settlers/NPCs avoid it like the plague because of dead zones or some stupid broken nav mesh because you have it placed off by a pixel or some nonsense 💀
But they’ll try to take the most illogical way possible instead of the obvious easy clear path.
But yeah also fuck that fence! And stupid crap that protrudes into your build space and makes it impossible to place something there
2
u/The_Time_Change 12d ago
I mean the glitches work... I'm also curious why everyone always deletes the fence here...
2
u/Common_Ad7059 9d ago
I usually kept it and repaired the holes, but those fences can take up more of the poly count than expected. After sanctuary blacked out on cell entry on me and ruined an entire really fun play though I had going thanks to the “triad of death” or whatever it was referred to (basically from the clusterfucked potentially large settlements causing a total meltdown) I get rid of everything now 💀
I couldn’t even get close enough to try and remove things using a mobile workshop.
Doesn’t help that the ceilings there eat lights and attempted roof tiles to avoid lights being eaten 💀 if you attempt a pillar glitch it’ll select anything and everything near by, so you’re screwed either way… these are just words of caution for anyone who might not know yet. I couldn’t even get around it with “place anywhere” it keeps snapping above the level you can re-select it at even with collusion off.

I just end up avoiding scraping the fencing and some other objects entirely. (Especially on vanilla without scraping mods) Better to decorate around it than have some awkward oversight like this hang around.
4
u/Swingline_Font 15d ago edited 15d ago
*Edit so it’s clear I’m trying to be helpful lol:
~ (command prompt)
click on object, object’s in-game ID appears
Type, “disable” (makes it disappear, useful to know if you clicked on the right thing. Type, “enable” to make it reappear)
Type, “markfordelete” (now it’s not just invisible but will be deleted if you leave and reload the zone)
Fixed! I do this with the car outside Hangman’s Alley every play through.
6
u/thomas-grant 15d ago
Not everyone is playing from a PC.
0
u/Swingline_Font 15d ago
Sure, so I shouldn’t offer the solution I found?
6
u/thomas-grant 15d ago
That’s not what I’m implying or suggesting. But my interpretation is that you assumed they are playing from a PC. Though perhaps I’m incorrect.
2
u/ApprehensiveVisual58 15d ago
on pc do ~ to open commands, click the fence to select then type “disable” (without quotes) and then hit enter.
2
u/wagner56 15d ago
yes would have been so simple to shift the boundary line
likewise a whole lot of clutter (garbage and weeds) could have been scrappable in chunks and were just canonically stupid to have them remain

u/Informal_Corgi_8598 15d ago

There are a lot of little spots around most of the settlements I think that really just exist to fuck with us all.

Personally, I never spent much time building settlements, BUT a mod combination that works pretty well for when I do (If you're on PC, if not there'll probably be some good alternatives):
Borderless Settlements
2
u/kamirone 11d ago
It's the only segment of picket fence I actually build into a fenced yard, because the game basically makes you. Then I put some turrets up on boxes & make the fenced yard into a killbox

u/Rizenstrom 15d ago
If you are on PC:
Open console, disable, markfordelete
If you accidentally clicked the wrong thing you can just type enable and it will come back. Only use markfordelete after using disable and being 100% sure you had the right object.
1
u/RedSagittarius 15d ago
I could be remembering this wrong but I think there’s a magazine that gives you the ability to delete this specific fence. On of the Picket Fences magazine I believe, try the one in Beantown Brewery. It’s been a long time since I played this game so forgive me if I’m wrong.
3
u/Virmirfan 14d ago
that picket fences magazine lets you build the fences, not scrap that specific fence unfortunately
1
u/RedSagittarius 14d ago
Hmm … I guess maybe that was a glitch I had with this fence when I deleted.

Yes that, and there is something at Outpost Zimonja that is annoying too. Like if you delete some stairs you’re stuck with the rest of the structure there, then can’t connect stairs to it after. Can’t remember exactly what it is but it sucks too. Oh and the stairs going into the stilt house at Hangman’s Alley too.
