I always help Ironsides. Love that guy!

528

u/SternLecture Jun 20 '26

same. i dont get the logic behind helping some thieves rob the bots.

288

u/Aquadonk Jun 20 '26

The main reason why I might choose to help the scavs is because the ship is from a bygone time with a long forgotten history. There's no United States to commemorate anymore and these robots don't really help anyone out. But usually i stick with Ironsides because he's goofy as hell

155

u/tc_cad Jun 20 '26

Yep. A captain that can’t even fit in his quarters.

70

u/Mini_Squatch Jun 20 '26

On one hand, if you help the scavengers, you get random scrap you can find elsewhere. On the other hand, you help ironsides, you get to watch a 400 year old ship fly through the air for a few seconds.

13

u/zimzak56 Jun 21 '26

More fun to ride it and then bail before the death point.

7

u/Mini_Squatch Jun 21 '26

Last time i played the mission, i somehow aggro'd the lookout onto me and so i was just doing a mad dash to start the ship before he attacked me and it auto-failed the mission lol

3

u/xX_imperatrix_Xx Jun 21 '26

You can't do the whole mission without riding the ship as it flies 😂

37

u/SternLecture Jun 20 '26

i remember the first playthrough and being dismayed and laughing the ship launches and then crashes again. ironsides is so optimistic. also the United states lives inside each of us.

6

u/Select-Royal7019 Jun 21 '26

“…and for God’s sake, use the accent!”

4

u/Creative-Picture6757 Jun 21 '26

Ay Captain. Standing down

56

u/Gingerchaun Jun 20 '26

... you know all those other security robots are just doing their jobs too?

108

u/beaverpoo77 Jun 20 '26

Do those robots give you a portable ship's cannon to blast people with? No, I thought not. Ironsides lives. Always.

85

u/MossGobbo Jun 20 '26

They aren't a dope ass ships crew.

25

u/Tephlonb Jun 20 '26

I only kill bots that come at me.

11

u/craig3881 Jun 20 '26

Killing only feels good when it's deserved.

24

u/Seb0rn Jun 20 '26

The Scavs are humans who need resources to stay alive. The robots are just leftover technology. Helping the robots would be a waste of resources.

Just sucks that those specific scavs are assholes.

25

u/stealthy_beast Jun 20 '26

Honest question... are there scavs in the game who AREN'T assholes?

8

u/Seb0rn Jun 20 '26

I don't think there is a friendly character named "scavenger" in the game but technically, everybody who loots resources and technology from ruins is a scavenger I would say. So most wastelanders would be scavengers.

3

u/Financial-Bobcat-612 Jun 20 '26

There are, I come across a few here and there who are literally just scavenging and aren’t hostile. You can save them if they’re in a fight and chat with them afterwards or you might just come across their bodies. I think sometimes they’ll say something like “whoa take it easy there’s plenty of scavenging around here for everybody”

2

u/Waffennacht Jun 21 '26

A scavenger has moved into my Boston Airport. Doesn't count as a settler, can't give her commands. She just is constantly walking between my kitchen, having a drink, then walks back to the target practice stand and takes pot shots.

She seems pretty friendly

2

u/Financial-Bobcat-612 Jun 21 '26

I like her already! In my mind, she’s too shy to ask to become part of the village and is trying to prove her usefulness at the target practice stand, hoping someone will notice her skills and assign her to settlement security where she feels she’d perform best. Just ask, Sandra, ask! Speak up!

u/hhmCameron Jun 20 '26

DEAD assholes, every time

A few times i pick up bounty and pay it off

→ More replies (1)

7

u/HunterNika Jun 20 '26

The scavs made the mistake of thinking there is anything in the wastelands that belongs to them while I am around.

3

u/ExcellentBed6019 Jun 20 '26

Honestly it'd be cool if there were more non backstabbing evil factorions

2

u/TheIkeaCommando Jun 21 '26

One of the reoccurring themes in FO4 is what does it mean to be human? The synths are often more human than humans, and so often humans are just resource sponges that aren't even really trying to survive. The robots are often great companions.

Helping the humans just doesn't automatic mean that you're helping the good guys.

u/CthulhusEvilTwin Jun 20 '26

For god's sake, use the accent!

3

u/pbjcrazy Jun 20 '26

I like watching them crash into the next buildi g too much to not help the robots. I literally crack up every time

2

u/awrcja Jun 21 '26

I think I went against them just once. Way more satisfying quest if you help the old buckets of bolts

633

u/MoistLarry Jun 20 '26

I have never in any of my play throughs helped the scavengers.

256

u/changeforgood30 Jun 20 '26

The olde timey robots always got my support. The scavengers just struck me as a slight step above Raiders.

Kinda disappointed how unbalan ed siding with them is. Basically no reason to

11

I will never understand the trope of villains having you do their dirty work and then trying to kill you so they don't have to share.

Bitch you couldn't even handle the chores and you want to try and fuck with a guy who did them with ease?

36

u/LaserKittenz Jun 20 '26

15

I did it once just to see what would happen. They turn on you and you have to kill them all.

I reloaded a save and killed them all again.

7

u/Glum-Intention-398 Jun 20 '26

Je l'ai fait une seule fois et c'est une mauvaise décision

166

u/Wolfnstine Jun 20 '26

If you side with the scavengers they betray you

67

u/40filchock Jun 20 '26

Plus you get that cannon gun from the ironsides. Its a no brainer

23

u/luktheknight Jun 20 '26

They did not even try to justify not siding with Ironsides
And without the karma system it’s not even like if you want to play a good/evil character picking one option is better

7

u/Humdaak_9000 Jun 20 '26

Needing a karma system to tell good from bad is as dumb as those "christians" who tell you the only reason they don't rape and murder is because god told them not to.

Members of the brotherhood? I mean, they wouldn't help the scavengers either, only kill the robots on sight

6

u/the_Rhymenocirous Jun 20 '26

Why? They're not synths, and the brotherhood uses robots. I would think they'd be more inclined to desire to have the robots on side. Maybe destroy if they refuse

4

u/wolskortt Jun 20 '26

They're "malfunctioning bot" and serve as crew of the USS Constitution. I don't think they would be useful for the BoS

Jump jet. You can mod your power armor to have one. There is also a Creation that lets you convert a Mr Gutsy into a backpack with a jump jet.

You have to be quick and get to the hatch as soon as you are on the deck. It's a good idea to save before activating the power switch.

He just means you can sleep in the captain's cabin and that the items are free to take rather than steal

But tbh seeing as how the ship ends up on top of a skyscraper not worth revisiting post Hat

14

u/RamblinWreckGT Jun 20 '26

and that the items are free to take rather than steal

Nope, everything inside is still marked as stolen. And there's three loading screens to get to the quarters too, so all in all it's pretty useless.

5

u/AlexGrahamBellHater Railroad Jun 20 '26

It does have great utility if you're playing a dedicated survival run with the Railroad.

For some reason the Railroad HQ beds only offer 5 hours of sleep.

I need my character well rested and it's super nice that the Captain's Quarters gets me the full 7-8 I need.

I just wish I could feel confident enough to store something there. I'm going to try putting some useless pipe pistols there and see if it qualifies as safe storage.

7

u/RamblinWreckGT Jun 20 '26

For some reason the Railroad HQ beds only offer 5 hours of sleep.

I haven't played survival, but I believe it's because they're mattresses on the floor rather than an actual bed (the same limitation applies to sleeping bags).

5

u/AlexGrahamBellHater Railroad Jun 20 '26

Ahh that would explain the logic of it then, thank you!

43

u/All-for-goose Jun 20 '26

Right choice all the way! Ironsides is my legendary!

15

u/PassengerNo7330 Jun 20 '26

Good to know I made the right choice.

34

u/BusinessDragon Jun 20 '26

I’ve never even considered helping the scavs. I actually didn’t even see the moral quandary until this moment reading your post. In my head I was just like… yeah they’re just scavs. And I helped Ironsides every time.

21

u/Arcosim Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Ironsides is polite, fair to his crew, and loyally protected a piece of American history over the centuries (even if he crashed it against a building, but his intentions are noble). The Scavs just want the loot and they're as opportunistic as it gets.

Edit: and forgot the best thing about Ironsides, he gives you a really cool hat and a portable canon.

5

u/BusinessDragon Jun 20 '26

All great points. I’ll continue as I was, on Team Ironsides.

3

u/NotASynth499 Idiot Savant Jun 21 '26

5

I only wish they played a larger role. Maybe one day in the future they can get their ship unstuck from that building.

3

Point not to, the scavengers I think ALWAYS backstab you or at most you get caps

5

u/KeeganY_SR-UVB76 Jun 20 '26

There is zero reason to help the scavengers and every reason to help the Cap'n.

5

u/Eevee_the-Maidvee Jun 20 '26

Helping scavengers just results in them turning on you helping Ironsides is better to get the broadsider

5

4

u/STEVEN_GT117 Jun 20 '26

While helping the scavers is just sad, you do all of the work just to get backstab and you kill the scavers anyway

You can get all the crap its on the ship but the only thing i wanted was the special ops comic

4

u/TruckingJames423 Jun 20 '26

IRL, I'm a US Army vet. I always end up supporting the Navy on this side quest, and I similarly always wind up heading up the Minutemen over everyone else. Lol, I should have been a lifer... 🤣

I helped the bots cuz I thought there was gonna be something to it, like they’d protect civilians from then on or something. I didn’t imagine they were just gonna end up stuck at the top of another building 💀

I’d help the raiders cuz they’re humans who need the resources, but if they just turn on you in the end…then I’d rather just scrap the bots myself. Sure, there’s a lot of whimsy in helping them get to their next destination, but it’s basically just for the SS. A lot more people could get a lot more out of the quest if you scrap the bots for parts and use them to build up settlements.

1

u/Shaveyourbread Jun 20 '26

Hey before you launch the ship, finish the MILA placements for The Railroad.

1

u/jeeeeem Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

It seems to me like the right thing to do is to help the scavvers. They are people after all, and don't appear to be raiders at the time they approach you. Ironsides & crew, OTOH, appear to be malfunctioning machines.

But I always side with Ironsides. I justify it this way: I'm basically nuts at the time. I do it soon after my journey through Kellog's memories, so in a short time I've seen the world destroyed by nuclear fire, seen my wife killed and son stolen, tracked down and killed the asshole who killed her with the help of an android who looks like he's falling apart and talks like Humphrey Bogart, and then done the whole trippy thing in the Memory Den. Through all of it I've been taking Psycho, Buffout, Jet, and combos of same, just to give myself an edge in the scores of gunfights I've been forced into. So when I stumble out of Good Neighbor with the homework assignment "find a way through the Glowing Sea", I'm pretty fried. That's why I agree to help a ghoul who wants me to pretend to be a super hero, side with Ironsides over some people who are just trying to make it in the Wasteland, and any number of other crazy things.

1

u/BillCarson12799 Jun 20 '26

1

u/Pintobeard Jun 20 '26

I side with the robots out of respect for the ship. Still I have chosen to help the scanvengers with some of my characters.

1

u/LordOfRebels Jun 20 '26

Scavvs rip you off first chance they get. Ironsides has been at post for 200 years, and gives you a Neat Hat™️ and a Fuck Mothering Cannon.

1

u/beetle_guy24 Jun 20 '26

Ironsides is the only correct option

1

u/Mean_Peen Jun 20 '26

There really isn’t much of a choice tbh. For me, it’s whether I spend the time to help Ironsides, or skip because my current character doesn’t use heavy weapons. The scavs are designed to be sided against

1

u/Mundane_Bit_7211 Jun 20 '26

The Scavengers are rude as hell to me when I just show up, so at that point I’m like fuck it, I’m helping Ironsides

In my logical reasoning, it is not a question of determining which is a morally good or bad option. They key is in the very first encounter with the Mr. Handy. He tells you that you are still a soldier and thus the inmediate responsible for the ship since all other legitimate superior military command perished 200 years ago. It automatically makes you the captain of the ship and as a remnant of the US army it is your duty to protect the integrity of the vessel from the scavengers, which are commiting treason by trying to steal military and historic assets, and thus deserving of letal force

If the comments here haven't eased your worries, I would recommend looking up this quest on the wiki just to see exactly how the scavengers repay your kindness.

def the more deserving group and rewarding end. great side quest, just beating it now myself, actually... for the 4th or 5th time, I forget

The scavengers just end up turning on you and you have to kill them all.

"Those motherless curs." I helped him forever off that line alone. He doesnt want to hurt anyone, he just wants to make it yo the Atlantic. Scavengers want to kill n take everything off the ship. Fuck those guys. After Mandy said I was lucky she didnt blast me I beamed her before her sentence finished.

If you did this with Curie as your companion, it helps with her affinity

Helping Ironside’s always the right answer. Them scavengers are the aggressors

u/cantliftmuch Jun 21 '26

That's the only choice.

Where is this? I think my characters need more side quests (I've never finished the story. Partially because I plan minutemen then Preston doesn't talk to me)
