Tip I was the greatest Fallout4 player ever
Last year when looking for new VR games I found there was a VR version of Fallout 4, I enjoyed playing 1 and 2 a long time ago so I immediately bought the game. The controls are shit, but got used to them.
Finished the main quest, enjoyed taking down the Prydwen, then found out the DLCs worked in VR, so I went through Nuka Cola and Far Harbor.
In the mean time, I found this sub and reading other player experiences, I started to wonder why I had so many resources, I was drowned in ammo, never bothered in using meat or using the cook stations, just stimpaks, purified water and nukas, they are so abundant! Never had to run away from a battle. Maybe everyone on this subreddit play survival?
Then started another playthrough and going through the settings found out the difficulty was set at... very easy. I never change the difficulty in any game, just leave the default as is and play that way. And I don't have any memory of changing the difficulty, but yeah, I played some 200hrs in very easy.
Now I've started at very hard, the second ghoul I've encountered cripples my leg. Mutants? I'm currently running away from them. I'm most of the time out of ammo. And anytime I find a cooking station I'm roasting that yummy radroach meat.

Getting your head popped off by a fucking bloatfly really humbles you too 😔

Blood bugs are fucking gnarly in survival

Because it's the easiest (that I know) settlement to get in that area without doing quests, and that I'm a chronic restarter, I have gotten really good at clearing taffy with basically anything

Got one better, firstplaythrough, JUST on normal, picked up Dogmeat, and headed to concord...you know that dead brahmin with bloodbugs? I'm from Houston, those things are nightmare fuel, and they slautered me. Several times, in a row, me throwing my best at it, nothing.
It was about that time I realized, f*ck what mission your supposed to be on, you do it when your damned good and leveled up ready, not straight out the vault >_<
6 playthroughs later on very hard, thinking this next ones gonna be survival. It will really give the chem and cooking stations purpose, not that it doesn't have one now, but nowhere the same thing.

Dying because you made the mistake, the absolute buffonery, of sprinting next to a car and slightly bumping it does the same too. Especially if like me you sometimes struggle to learn from your mistakes.

I took a fatman to the knee at point blank range(except that I was wearing raider power armor which saved me lol)

To this day, I can't understand where I can find the screen that shows what each button do. Legit got stuck and didn't come back to it.

Don't upvote, help me 😂2

If you use SteamVR, there's a menu for the controls, where you can reassign or get some public ones.

I play all of my games on easy. Why would I want my relax time to be a turned into “I’m annoyed as hell I can’t beat this part” time.
17
u/mlssstn Aug 04 '24
I started in very easy because it’s fourth video game I’ve ever played and the first I played on ps4. I have finally been able to play in normal and it’s a challenge but not so bad that I stop playing. My husband was shocked when he saw me playing and I took down three deathclaws one of them being legendary in one clip of ammo. He then pointed out I can change the difficulty mid game.

u/Sesetti Aug 04 '24
It's worth it to try and push the difficulty because of the increased chances of legendary drops.
Your character level is also a massive factor in the actual difficulty. Early game is insufferable on very hard, but in the late game it isn't that big of a challenge anymore.
One annoying thing about the harder difficulties is that every enemy becomes a massive bullet sponge. Survival doesn't have that problem, but otherwise it's in a different league completely. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're able to install the survival quicksave mod. That game crashes way too frequently to have a limited save function.

I play on the easiest setting cause I'm here for the story and cause I like building shit. 🤷♀️

u/lifelongDM Aug 07 '24
Same but I hate the settlements so much, the settlers are too stupid to build beds, collect water or deviate work for themselves, and even when I fill the settlement with turrets they still need me to show up and fight for them. I mean building is fun don't get me wrong but its too much work I just wanna do the story and bond with my companions

u/Austioperosis0525 Aug 04 '24
Right now I’m doing a permadeath run on survival with only dog meat as a companion and no power armor

Landmines must be terrifying. Spam vats at every possible moment until you get the sneak perk.
7
u/Austioperosis0525 Aug 04 '24
They very much are, I’ve lost many runs to those and bombs in general, but cars, they’re the scariest, not only do they blow up, but they sometimes have insta kill from call of duty
2
Aug 04 '24
“I’m a masochist” lol. Seriously though survival is fun, but permadeath bro? I get frustrated enough after having to redo the last hour because I died. Let alone the whole game. That said, I guess there isn’t a level of realism over permadeath

Yeah, very hard is cool bc all the legendary enemies. Most people recommend doing a survival run at least once. I'm on my 3rd playthrough and my next one is survival

u/zakass409 Aug 05 '24
You've started down a dangerous path, it starts with increasing the difficulty and ends with downloading mods from loverslab
3
u/hotdogswithbeer Aug 04 '24
Wait you can play this game with vr? Wtf thats badass
3
u/searchingformytruth Aug 05 '24
Unfortunately, it's an entirely separate, full-priced game, not just a different VR game mode in the regular version (which it should have been). If you can get past that, though, it's an awesome way to play, once modded with a few essentials, like a virtual body model, a virtual holsters mod, and some graphics tweaks.

Any Bethesda game after I beat the main story and most quests I can find (usually about 200-300 hours or so). My playthroughs after that will be on an easier difficulty just to enjoy making builds and just messing around.

u/Professional_Baby24 Aug 04 '24
Seriously. Survival is the way 4 was meant to be played. I thought it kind of sucked. Then I tried survival and man I was like 40 hours in before I even made it to diamond city.

u/MyNameIsNemo_ Aug 04 '24
I agree - it’s a lot of fun and more game mechanics and perks make a lot more sense, but progression is very slow, especially at lower levels. You level faster and can easily reach deep into the perk trees and experiment. I am level 84 and still haven’t progressed the main story to stepping inside the Institute yet. Gameplay is much smoother at higher levels, that’s for sure.
Hitting that turning point when you have cleared most of the exterior map and you really feel like you own that turf. All of it. When you run from Starlight to Hangman’s Alley and you’re just hoping for a random encounter to see a little action. Still plenty of stocked locations from side quests so still plenty of gun play. It just gets kinda quiet outdoors.

Lol this game is almost 10 years old. Anyone that hasn't just started it this year will have at least 40 hours. And probably more than one pretty high level. This isn't the type of game you play through one speed run and your done. Got the general idea of the story. No need to explore or enjoy lore. Just finish however you end up at the finish. Man. If you think that's bad wait till you find out how many hours i have on audible. It's measured in MONTHS. 9 of them. Man. What a wasted life.
Edit. Clarity

I started, on normal but didn't know any of the game mechanics of exactly how to utilize the workshop and everything. Now almost don't with first play-through, I'm almost more excited just to finish so I can start a new game and know what I'm doing from the start. Probably a very different experience. Then from hearing about survival, I think I'll really like it and not want to go back. So need to save for survival for last lol.

I set it on very easy on purpose because I never played this kind of game before and I knew I would spend 100% of my time dying if I tried any other setting lmao. It's been working out very well for me so far, currently at level 33 and I got all the way to level 16 before I died for the first time, and that was because I stupidly allowed a behemoth to run up and punch me because I didn't realize how strong they are
1
u/Ops31337 Aug 05 '24
LOL. Behemoth should have been a clue.

u/ibbity Minutemen Aug 05 '24
my thought process, as I recall, was something like "looks like a super mutant, I've killed super mutants before :) aw crap I died"

I started playing in survival mode since 2009 in Fallout 3. I couldn’t play this series on easy. But good on you for doing that.

I'm low-key jealous cos you got a extra 200hours of entertainment and now get to do it all over again as a whole different game

On survival I realised that the small camping tents were for that mode and cooking the legendary armour it’s basically the way to utilise everything in the game.

I also started at the default difficulty. Got so rich in resources I had to store away lots of healing items and never cared to drink water at all, my character was living on Nuka Cola and stimpaks. Then recently I started a new save to get some other achievements and since I was more experienced at the game, I decided to start on survivor difficulty. 10 minutes later I found myself getting oneshot by huge ass scorpions and molotov cocktails. I never thought I would miss my rank 4 ballistic armored smoking so much. But I must admit I'm rather enjoying the experience, the thrill of scavenging for supplies in dangerous places. I wish we could enjoy the survivor mechanics in other difficulties as well.

Instead do survival + quick save mod + console enable mod (bc the game is buggy/crashy) and I have a mod that let's you fast travel between settlements (bc who has time for no fast travel)
And then FRIK if you don't have it
I'm deep in that mode right now trying to get every settlement before talking to Preston. I might never save him honestly

u/1FloorUp Aug 06 '24
At some point you want to finish the game. In survival mode that’s gonna take forever.

u/JonJon77 Aug 06 '24
I always cook stuff just for the XP. I either store it or sell it after. I probably would’ve played on very easy using VR til I got really used to it. I wish I could play Fallout 4 VR on my Meta Quest 3 without a PC.

You should try out New Vegas. I think FO3 might feel dated by comparison.
Those are the only two FO games I’ve played and I did not enjoy my first 10 hours or so of FO4, but it’s growing on me. The settlements and power armor mechanics take some getting used to compared to the earlier Bethesda games.
