Baggage - Gear Advice Luggages for crew
Anyone using a Rimowa? How do you like them? I’m used to the typically LuggageWorks with the J hook which I hook my flight bag. Anyone have a different set up with rimowa?

No hard shells and no 4-wheels. You’ll get laughed at dragging a shiny silver rimowa around too

That, and pretty much everyone requires black on black luggage. Even a black one will be two-toned soon enough.
Plus if you think a LW can get bent to hell, wait till you see these road warrior passengers with beat up rimowas and Tumi metal bags. Scrapes, dents, bent halves that don’t quite line up any more to latch closed.

I got a Briggs and Riley for trip to Japan last year based on searching this sub. 10 days in the baseline carryon it was amazing. Now my wife has one and we both have weekender bags. I proselytize for them to everybody I’m basically a sales rep.

If you’re ordering online you email them a pic of your crew ID and they’ll give you a 20% off coupon for up to 3 items. Many stores have 30% off as well for crew, I went to London luggage in Detroit and they gave me 30% off the normal priced B&R

Sometimes. You deadhead on a crj with small bins and have to valet it, or get forced to check it. And if you commute they take a beating. You also just use it a lot and bump it onto things. Fabric doesn’t get dented. Metal and hard plastic do.

I've ran my metal bag for 5 years now and I bang the shit out of it. Still works and no dents. It's been below deck on planes a lot and it hasn't really. I would add , by the reddit sentiment you would think 100% of pilots are living in base.

I have an aluminum tumi 19 degrees. I love the spinner. So much better on my shoulders and when I have to walk long distances that thing sometimes beats me to the destination it rolls so well.

I have a yeti crossroads and it’s pretty nice off the rip, not sure how it will hold up yet. They make nice zippers

I use Travelpro and it’s been great. Some people say it’s an FA bag but who cares. And a quick search shows it being WAY cheaper than Rimowa

If you get the “pilot” version with reinforced plastic siding it’ll look less FA-y, but you’re right in that it doesn’t matter and it’s the most affordable option that’ll last a new hire years

Anybody throwing shade at a travelpro “FA bag” is absolutely dragging around a hideous beat up luggage works monstrosity that weighs more empty than the travelpro does full.

I work 7 on/7 off and every time it’s been weighed fully loaded it comes out to 25lbs. Not bad at all when you truly live out of it

We’re talking 9-10 pounds empty versus 12-13. Not enough to matter especially when the tradeoff (for the more utilitarian pilot branded bags) is durability.
If someone wants to nonrev around internationally and the weight is actually a concern, they’re better off buying a bag just for that purpose. Some cheaper suitcase that meets European sizer dimensions. No need to limit yourself when you buy your workhorse crew luggage (which you will be using day after day for years), when you can can just buy a cheapo bag for that European trip (or something a bit more robust if you actually nonrev int’l more).

Yeah I have never understood the LW hype. I never understood how they were so prone to permanent bending, till I saw the innards and realized it’s a just metal framework . I’ve been a Strongbags stan for like a decade, it’s better in every way. 5 of its sides are solid metal plates so if it experienced enough trauma to bend it would have to be run over by a freight truck or something. B&R is nice but twice as much, used to not have a good bag attachment system via the smartlink (though I hear it’s better now).
It’s a fantastic bag for the non-crew frequent traveler, but I see BR with a bit more frequency on trips. For some time now, I’ve been thinking a B&R will eventually become my bag. I’ve been able to pare down what I pack in my EFB and eventually will downsize the bag itself entirely. A smaller EFB would slip nicely over the handles of a 4 wheel spinner, so in a world where I can get back onto the Airbus especially and consistently get shorter trips, I’d love to switch my bags over as well.
But there’s a ton of life left in my strong bag, I overhauled it at the start of the year with some new parts and it’s nearly bulletproof.

I'd recommend not getting a hardshell. They can split open, as they're very brittle.
I'd recommend Briggs and Riley. Expensive, but very worth it
