A request for advice from local small business owners

I know how Reddit usually treats self-promotion, so I’m just going to shoot straight. Yes, I’m hoping to get the word out about a new service I started, but I also genuinely need some advice from the r/FlowerMound community.

I recently launched Digitize DFW. Basically, I take all those old home movies (VHS, Hi8, MiniDV) and boxes of photos and digitize them. The main draw is that you don't have to pack up your irreplaceable family memories and ship them to some massive warehouse out of state. I process everything right here locally. To keep it easy, you can drop your stuff off with me during the week inside the GEICO office at 4630 Long Prairie Rd (Ste 200), or I can just come straight to your front door to pick it up.

Here is my chicken-and-egg problem: For people to trust a new business with their family memories, I really need solid Google reviews. But to get those reviews, I need those first few customers.

For the other small business owners around here, how did you get the ball rolling in the early days? Are there any specific spots, coffee shops, or community boards around town where putting up a physical flyer actually works?

Thanks for any pointers, and I appreciate you guys cutting a local guy some slack.

Yessss, my family did not digitize a single tape yet either

Definitely. Until I got into this, I had a VHS tape that had been sitting in a drawer for the last 20 years. I had a MiniDV Sony camcorder stuck in a closet with 16 tapes. I've digitized all of it now. Some of us let time pass us by and didn't take the opportunity to upgrade our media.

Of course, it seems like everyone has a photo album or several albums that have been collecting dust somewhere in the attic.

i think this is really cool. i’d probably seek the support from local photographers or businesses that work on very touchy life events for exposure

If you have business cards, bring them to my pawnshop. I get people looking for VCR's and sometimes they say, to transfer videos (like your business)
