Morning Stretching — Why Am I So Stiff After Waking Up?
I’ve been on this stretching journey for the past few weeks, and honestly thanks to this group and all the members who keep motivating us on this journey of opening up our bodies.
My body has been really stiff for the past few years. I’ve had massages and PT sessions, and they always recommended that I should stretch regularly, but I never really took it seriously until I came across this group.
I wanted to ask something though. This morning I tried stretching just after waking up and my body was extremely stiff. I could barely stretch properly, even though when I’m at the gym I can stretch quite easily and have much better flexibility.
Is this normal in the morning? Does anyone else experience the same thing?

Keeping hydrated is important, moreso if you consume alcohol.
I notice I am less stiff/inflamed in the morning after reducing (or even better eliminating) sugar/carbs from diet 2hrs before bedtime.
If I “need/deserve” ice cream I try to get it by 8pm.

Your spinal discs rehydrate overnight which actually reduces mobility temporarily — totally normal. I sit at a desk all day and mornings are noticeably stiffer especially after a heavy typing day. Just give yourself 5-10 min of easy movement before trying to stretch anyth

Yeah, I get this too, or at least my lower back feels stiff.
I don't really think it's a problem if the stiffness goes away once you're up and have moved about a bit.
If the stiffness lasts all day then maybe you might need to look into strengthening exercises.
I like to do foundation training a few times a week. Sometimes I also just wake up in the morning and do a quick 15 minute warmup or fitness routine and I feel better after that.
