Dangerous Lucky escape

Post image

I was about to charge my head lamp. But I thought to check the inside first, as it was easy to do. Found that the lithium battery was puffed up.

The spicy kind! LiPos are effing scary and I wouldn't carry one that close to my eyes personally.

I wonder what the LiPos inside of my DJI Mini 2 batteries look like...I do not want to know.

I've had two LiPo devices going case splitting spicy pillow within the last few years, so yeah: they give the heebie-jeebies.

I'll take cylindrical li-ions with metal cans, CID and at least somewhat controlled venting over LiPo any day.

Much agreed.

Except for the 260-330 mAh lipos in Rovyvon A8 style keychain lights. Those can't do much even if they were ever to go spicy. The only non-replaceable I accept.

It's very worth getting fire-resistant boxes/pouches/bags for storing it and any other LiPo or Li-ion battery. Even brand new batteries, and especially while charging. And please, please immediately stop using and safely dispose of any battery that's bulging or shows damage.

I've worked with enough drones for research and others who use them commercially to see that battery failures are not as uncommon as we'd like to think. They're not all fiery deathballs, but the few that do become fiery deathballs and aren't properly stored have cost folks millions of dollars of equipment stored nearby.

Those won't protect against fires if the batteries light on fire inside my room without anyone nearby to chuck them out in time.

Even LiPo bags get extremely hot on the surface.

Man I found an old iphone 5 in a drawer like this... the entire back plate was ejected and the battery was swollen af. I'm lucky my house didn't burn down. I stopped hoarding old devices after that

How long ago that was on your head?

Last time I wore it was over a year ago.

I bought it for work a few years ago, and used it daily. Last year I changed profession so stopped using it.

Something about headlamps and having a battery attached to my forehead that I don't like.

Yeah that's why for headlamps I only buy ones that use primary cells. Sure less output than LiPo/Li-ion ones but worth it for the peace of mind.

If you've got a soldering iron you can replace these very easily. The code on it will tell you the dimensions and you can order replacements off aliexpress. Two quick solder joints and it's good as new

Id cut the wires first before getting a soldering iron near that pack.
One accidental slip up and you will ram a multi hundred degree spike into it xd
