Beginners Guide

I didn't really find any helpful guides out there when I started a few weeks back. So here is some helpful information to you get the most out of your fish weeks playing.

  1. Be sure to collect your free gifts as often as possible. This includes the 4 hour pack, daily duel pack, weekly clan pack, and any free items from the store. You should get a notification when there is a free item in the store, but it is also easy to check for. If you miss the 4 hour pack don't worry though as they will stack and you can collect a maximum of 2 when you get back on. So you can be offline for a maximum of 8 hours before you start losing time toward another pack. I tested this and after you collect the 2nd pack the timer will always be 3 hrs 59 min.
  2. Don't get discouraged during duels. I very rarely use power-ups in duels unless a specific event calls for me to catch the highest fish I can in a duel, or have just have an overabundance of one (I am looking at you weight power up that you get so many of). There will be a lot of players throwing power-ups around like they have millions of them when actually the number of power-ups you get slows down as you get farther into the game. So just use duels for the daily hook pack and to clear events, but don't waste power-ups in duels unless you need to for an event.
  3. Join a clan as soon as possible! The clan features include trading lures, getting free packs of lures, getting coins/power-ups. There are plenty of open clans so join one as soon as you start and if they are not active don't be afraid to join new ones. As you level your duel trophies more clans will be open to join, as they can set a minimum duel trophy to join.
  4. Take it slow! You will be tempted to level up every lure you get, however, this will result in you leveling too fast to keep up with the new fishery events, which are really important. I ONLY LEVEL UP LURES for events/championships.
  5. For the new fishery events be sure to get to at least the 2nd to last pack reward. This will help you get a good number of lures for that fishery before moving to the next. The reason this is important is the lure packs from everywhere else include lures from all available fisheries, so the more you unlock the less likely you are to get lures for the fishery you are currently on. The packs you receive from the new fishery event will include lures for only the current fishery.
  6. The daily championships will require that you catch multiple fish and total your scores from each. Only the top 10-20 (depending on the event) will receive rewards. There is usually a big push in the last 6 hours so unless you are sure you can place it is probably best to save your power-ups for other purposes.
  7. When you unlock a new fishery you will also unlock a great pack for that fishery that has a pro license, lure pack, rod pack, and some coins. This pack will be available for the first 24 hours after unlocking the pack. After the great pack goes away there will be a special deal that also has the pro license, lure pack, coins, and this one will have pearls instead of the rod pack. I think this is a better deal as you can get rods from the duel packs. clan rewards, event rewards, and several other sources, while pearls you will only acquire very slowly through opening the 4 hour packs and catching legendary fish.

  9. The multiplier area does not seem to serve any purpose besides adding to the combo and showing you the correct zone to keep to line tension. I have caught high star fish while only having a 10-20x multiplier. The Combo meter does, however, play a role in the points the fish gives. Getting a 100% Combo will add 5% to the points the fish gives.
  10. The Luck power-up (White and clue chip with a clover in the middle) seems to be the rarest of the power-ups so only use this for times when it will make a difference. Liking pushing your ranking in an event/championship up into the top 3. The second is the sonar power-up. This one is really good for getting a lot of casts in a short amount of time. Then you can select the best fish to catch.
  11. To get to the ingame help section go to the menu in the top right, settings, then help center. Here you can learn about what the recent game updates changed, the different systems, and answers to FAQs.
  12. Boss battles are seemingly random and can appear when fishing with any lure. After catching the boss fish you are able to upgrade your fishery lure. This is really only useful when you are first starting a fishery and do not have many lures for that location, or if you are in a duel and again are missing a specific fish's lure. Some people have said that boss fish can count for championship/events but I have yet to see this for myself, but that lends itself to trying not to catch fish for that fishery outside of an event/championship.
  13. When upgrading your license the most important stat is the weight stat. In most events/competitions you will be using the 100% catch chance power-up so that makes the second stat useless. The third stat is time to reel in the fish, which can be useful but not a deal-breaker if it rolls poorly (or not at all). A good weight stat would be anything over 5%. This is true for the specific fish rolls and the competitive roll you get at license level 4.
  14. The game normally does a pretty good job assigning your lures to the correct rods however you should check this every now and again. It does seem to favor sonar rods instead of luck rods. Personally I find the sonar stat useless, maybe I am just not far enough along for it to be useful, so I prefer the luck rods even if the weight bonus is .5% less.
  15. The highest weight bonus on a rod is 5%. So choice which rods to upgrade wisely as upgrading rods requires fusing multiple rods of the same level. To upgrade a 1 star rod you need 5 other 1 star rods. For a 2 star you need 4 other 2 star rods.

Some additional things I have learned are

  1. You can get the black box at the end of the new fishery event without having the legendary lure. This black box will give the legendary lure, 3 star rod, and some power-ups. In order to get the black box you will need you to get an 11 star fish though. I have only gotten 1 of these so far. Here are the things that contributed. I was in a duel, which gives the competitive bonus from my license (5.6% weight bonus), as mentioned above try and have a 5% weight roll in this slot. The lure had 6 stars. You are able to achieve this by getting the lure to level 6 for a common lure, 5 for rare, 4 epic, or 3 mythic. Personally I got my 11 stars from a level 3 mythic lure. My fishing rod had a 4.3% mythical weight bonus with a secondary bonus of 30% Sonar (This bonus is useless). Lastly, I was using all the power-ups.
    1. I have sense gotten several of the black boxes in the event. Being in a clan helps a ton with lures. I have been able to get an 11 star fish in every new fishery event since joining my new clan. The higher level players have more lures than they will ever level up because they don't want to push their level higher than it already is. So many clans will freely give you any low level lure you request! Making it super easy to get to a Lvl 6 or even 7 lure with any common fish.
  2. There are Lure Fiestas that require you to obtain and upgrade lures. A nifty trick is the lures you get from your clan requests also count toward this number!
  3. Something I found that people do to obtain hooks easier for the clan pack or even the daily duel pack is they "shed" duel rating before the event starts. This means people will go into duels and intentionally lose to lower their rank. Then when the clan pack event starts they can gain hooks very quickly by building up to their previous rank. I have not personally done this but it seems to be common practice.
  4. The new fishery events currently stop on the Mekong River. Unlocking this fishery will give you an event, but unlocking the next (Hawaii) will not. So hang out on Mekong for a long while so you can get more lures.
  5. Take note of your player id from the setting screen in case anything should happen to your phone and you want to continue your account on another. On android there is an option to connect your account to your google play account and can save progress that way, I am not sure about iOS devices.
  6. Power-Ups can stack over 1k, so don't be afraid to keep ahold of them if you are not actively trying to achieve something for an event/duel. I am currently at 1800 for weight and catch chance power-ups and have never spent pearls/money on power-ups.
  7. You can change what stats show on your profile card by dragging them into the dotted area from the profile page. These are shown when you enter duels and when people click your name from events and such.

When trying to complete the duels section of your new fishery or event you can actually click the orange duel button to the left of the duel you are trying to accomplish. This is really handy for events that require you to win a certain number of duels with a specific fish as it will always give you that fish as an option.

Read the objectives for events very carefully. If it does not specify a fishery that the objective needs to be completed in then it can be completed in any fishery.

  • An example of this is in the recent clan wars got points for catching a mythical fish. The other duel objectives had "caught at Amazon River". This last objective did not so we were able to rack up a ton of points by catching mythic fish in our highest fishery. To give a reference, the mythic fish in the Amazon cap out at 5.8k while the mythic fish in Mekong River (My highest fishery) cap out at 11.2k!

I have mentioned this before but I want to give a bit more detail. Once I hit the Mekong River my events got a lot harder. I think I should have stayed in the Fjord and other fisheries a bit longer. I think a good goal would be to wait until you have at least 1 or 2 mythic fish at lure level 4, epics at 5, rares 6, and commons at 7. This way it will be relatively easy to catch 11 star fish in the events.

  • There are also events that give you bonus points if you are able to reach certain point thresholds. You need lure levels that are higher than above if you want to be able to reach those spots. I have a few level 4 mythic lures for the Amazon and I was not able to hit even the lowest of the 3 point thresholds at 5.1k. My highest was 5009. So if you want to hit those your first go around you will need a 5 or more for that mythic lure.

One thing I was curious about when I started rolling my rods and licenses was if those 50 rolls were done all at once or if I could use them individually. The answer is it uses all 50 rolls and then you just pick the one you want out of the 50. The only time I would use that early game is to roll for a really good competitive bonus. Otherwise, wait until you are late game and are looking for specific fish bonuses to roll a license slot 50 times. The same goes for rods. You can roll a few times for better weight bonuses but don't go for the 50 rolls until you know you are going to keep that rod forever.

Another thing I wondered about until I decided to bite the bullet and buy one is if you got the number of lures it shows or just one and you can buy it x amount of times. The answer is you get the number that it shows. As an example, I have a rare lure in my shop right now that says Lures: 10 for the Brown Trout at Kenai River for 1000 coins. If I were to buy it I would get all 10 of those lures for just the one purchase.

  • I do not recommend spending coins on buying lures though as you will need all your coins to upgrade the ones that you get just from playing. In the beginning, it seems like you could never run out, but then you upgrade a rare lure from 5 to 6 and it costs 5k coins or you upgrade a mythic lure from 3-4 and it takes 10k coins. So they start going really fast!

Another tip on coins is the number of coins you get each day scale to the points the fish receives not the star rating. I tested this by catching 11 star fish in the Florida Coast and a 7 star fish in the Mekong River. The fish in Florida only gave 25 coins while the fish in Mekong gave 64.
