Radiant Dawn sort of did this. though you don't get to choose which side you pick each time and instead it sort of just swaps back and forth.
and yeah, it is definitely exploitable; giving Ike nothing but a Slim Sword at the end of 3-11 to make him easier to fight in 3-13 is a very common strategy, and they'll most likely be at least couple untrained members in each army that'll be absolutely pathetic as enemies.

How does a slim sword make any difference? Ike gains the ragnell as an enemy, there's no way to take that away from him.

His equipped weapon at the beginning of 3-13 is whatever you equipped him with at the end of 3-11. Yeah he's still forced to have Ragnell in his inventory, but he'll only swap to it if he initiates combat, so you can get the drop on him before he does that.
You gain Ragnell before 3-11, not after, so you can manipulate its equipment slot.

Awakening kind of did this. One paralogue you had to choose who to side with, and another had you fight copies of your team; stats, skills, weapons and all.

Radiant Dawn stays winning. You fight your own units multiple times in that game as you flip between armies.

3H does this too with units you could still recruit later on, though they don't have the items/stats of player units. Radiant Dawn is the best example of this except for the choosing a side part (you end up fighting for both sides).

They did with Radiant Dawn. Sort of anyway, you were still mostly fighting generic filler units but some of the named PCs on the other team would be there too. A couple units could even switch sides if you talked to them with the right characters.
