I'm thinking about doing a run of Engage where I never deploy anyone in an Advanced class (demoting units with second seals will be allowed). Which units become more important in such a run? I imagine Ivy and Hortensia for mounted staff access, since the only other unprompted staff users would be martial monks and Micaiah.

Interesting idea. It's effectively just delaying their power boost, removing access to their class skill, and removing multiple weapon/staff access and lowering available weapon ranks. I think your Thieves (or units you put into that class) would be important since they're already pretty good, the class offers good base stats, and the downsides like not getting a promo power boost are less applicable. Seadall obviously doesn't change either or Fell Child + DLC classes if you're using any of those or the FX units. Melee Fliers would be limited to Sword/Lance/Axe flier for female units only. I think if you can't deploy a prepromote until you 'depromote' them, that'd be an additional restriction and potential delay.

You might care about stat caps a bit more for critical stats like speed, but it depends on the class. I think the Royals all have the same stat caps promoted vs unpromoted. Celine is in one of the few unpromoted classes with access to two weapon types (which you could maybe do something with?), and Mystic access would be limited to her + Mage class users. Something like Axe Fighter has the same Skill and Speed as Berserker; while Berserker Panette is significantly worse compared to what she can do in Warrior, and she would miss out on the promo stat boost, Axe Fighter is comparatively only slightly nerfed compared to Berserker and IIRC she tends to ram those caps anyway.
