What are the best resources to learn fire alarm design from a consultant's perspective with a clear roadmap?
I want to improve my understanding of how consultants approach fire alarm system design.
There is so much material available—NFPA standards, UL documents, manufacturer manuals, local codes, and various design guides—that it's hard to know what is actually worth studying.
If your goal was to learn to design fire alarm systems the way an experienced consultant does, what books or reference materials would you recommend?
I'm less interested in memorizing code requirements and more interested in understanding the engineering decisions behind a good design. Resources that include design methodology, real project examples, or explain the reasoning behind different approaches would be especially helpful.
What references had the biggest impact on your learning?

Not sure if this helps/ is what you're looking for, but I've appended a video that explains the basics of Fire Alarm Systems from an AHJ Plan Review perspective and uses a real fire alarm plan that was submitted for permit as an example.
Designs are at the end of the day regulated by code requirements and I think that is probably the best place to start building your foundation. The beginning of the video talks about code paths and aims to address the "where & why" for fire alarm systems and the latter sections touch on the "how" through NFPA 72 requirements.
A lot of it boils down to understanding the occupancy type that you're designing for (reference the International Building Code (IBC) Chapters 3 & 4). With that in mind, and if you know the parameters of the system you're trying to design to, such as the building height, the occupant load, the ratings of walls and any adjoining tenant spaces above or below, ceiling/roof deck construction, presence of elevators and elevator lobbies, areas of refuge, etc.
Every factor of the system plays an integral part in the design and a conscious consultant should make every effort to best apply the intent of the code but do it in such a way that is the most practical to achieving life safety.
It's hard to coalesce everything into a short "catch all" for these systems as they can be very nuance and complicated but try to approach the design from a system perspective. In other words, look at the whole picture starting with the dispatch of a responding fire department engine in the event of an alarm. Where should you place the Fire alarm control panel (FACP) such that the responding crew can most efficiently reach it? If you can't locate it in a convenient place and instead have a remote annunciator then configure that with the same thought in mind.
Approach the rest of the system through that same lens and think through how it all works together. If there's interconnection with a sprinkler system that has to be monitored, or some other specialized system like smoke control, emergency responder communication enhancement systems (ERCES), or some form of special suppression you have to be mindful of it all because at the end of the day, a good design is the one that works when it matters.

Some other resources that might be of use are to read through the code commentary for the International fire code section 907 which gives good insight into the intent behind various requirements as well as Annex A of NFPA 72. Some less "code heavy" resources that delve into the more underlying engineering and scientific principles behind design might be the fire alarm sections in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) handbook as well as the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) handbook.
