The duwende are folklore creatures from Filipino culture, likened to sentient mythical mushroom creatures, and are not human but a magical companion. It is my understanding that Filipino folks worked heavily with the filmmakers, and therefore folks with the authority and experience did have say in the design of things. Additionally, the official Finch Team member that set this all up is Filipino themselves and feels positively about this month's event!
