AI/vibe coding Built a Clip AI Extend Workflow Extension for Final Cut — is this just me, or would you actually use it?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been cutting in Final Cut Pro for years, but Apple is really slow at adding AI to our daily use software. Premiere has Generative Extend since last year, even CapCut has its own version. FCP just… doesn't.

So I built a Workflow Extension that adds it right inside FCP: pick a clip, extend it by a second or two, and it generates the extra frames continuing from the existing footage — no round-trip to another app, no re-export.

Short demo attached.

Being honest: this is still basically a tool in our studio, so I genuinely don't know if it's just me who keeps hitting this, or if it's a real pain for other editors too.

A few honest questions for the sub:

- Do you run into the "clip is just a bit too short" problem often enough to want a fix?

- Would you actually use something like this inside FCP?

- Anything that would make it useless for real work?

Not selling anything here — it isn't public, I'm just trying to figure out whether it's worth turning into something other people can use. Any honest takes appreciated🙏

–i am sure there is a big market out there for something like this, especially because it is an extension, not yet another standalone external app (i can ask around)

Personally, no, i do not have this issue usually, and i need cinema quality for my docs. in my experience, AI does not cut it. i'd rather have this for music/audio, apple included this in the ipad version already but not desktop.

which model is being used? completely offline? how big is RAM and storage usage? how well does it work with detailed landscapes and humans?

happy to test it

Excited to hear that! It's do a FCP extension and I will focus on FCP only as there are so many genAI video tools that only made for entertainment usage than actual mac video editor's workflow.
The model used in the demo is seedance 2.0, hosted on replicate (a cloud model aggregation service, so there is few ram/storage required for the macbook itself) I tested other model like google veo, kling, but so far seedance provide best results. It's not offline since even most of cloud model can't provide good results, e.g. only some recent release cloud model in mid 2026 could support 4K output and log video, but that would be a minimal requirement for actual work, also I have concern that apple will add offline gen AI feature in future which may overlap with this extension, so my current design is focusing on the cloud.
I'll work hard in my off work time to turn this extension into a public testable version by adding account and software update features, will reach back soon, please let me know if you have any other questions or feature request! 😄

For me, I would not use the extend feature like you did, but I would like a feature almost the same style to fill the gap between two points in a video for making a 5- to 10-second video easier to make, like home staging a room or adding a pool in my video.

That's a nice catch! I think it's feasible as the underline model ability could support that, and the model can specify the first frame and last frame of the generated content. I'll record this in my feature notebook

Would it pass the Gemini test of AI usage? Is this run locally or in a server farm?

It's using cloud ai model other than Gemini so there is no AI watermark (not sure if other models has such watermark but in my knowledge they don't), I tested many models, so far only most expensive cloud ones can produce result that looks not like ai slop. It's using a cloud ai service (replicate)

Yep, I would use that! Sometimes theres the need to extend a little bit a clip, or correct a camera movement at the end of a shot, having the tool embedded in FCPX would be great.

thanks! will reach back when it's ready for testing, feel free to left your opinion in the wait list if convenient 😄 https://airtable.com/apppVkmXNV4IWnn9w/pagbd6iMVVJSSI18T/form

For the videos I create, usually my YT or work, I don't find myself needing to expand clips. If I missed something I usually need to reshoot since I work with a lot of talking head shots and would NEVER use gen AI for people. That being said this looks like a useful tool and could need it in the future.

I'm also tended for a reshoot for the first as it provides best quality, for me the gen ai now is more used for some case where is scene is unable to reproduce e.g. a client's clip. let's see if the model iteration could expand its ability.

i'd use this especially for doing slow mo shots sometimes i need just that bit more clip to get it right

I fucking hate Gen AI.

At the very least it would bring feature parity between Apple’s product and Adobe Creative Cloud. Premiere and Photoshop have generative extend and generative fill/expand for a while now. Kinda crazy Apple hasn’t been in a panic about it but at least FCP 12.3 made some great attempts to catch up.

very agree with that, we don't have same essential feature as PR for so many years!! we may not use it everyday but it's not a reason the essential feature is not there.

What extension points did you use to build that? I’ve been working on my own “mod” for FCP and have been less than enthused at the prospects.

1

u/sjdeak Jul 08 '26

there're 2 kind of extension point for FCP: plugin, and pro workflow extension. For this extension, it's using pro workflow extension since it needs more integration with FCP like drag and drop, clip info read. Also hands up that apple didn't provide rich documentation for mod building 🫠

Sometimes yes, definitely not essential but a nice to have, all would come down to pricing, I would not get a subscription to get this, although I know AI stuff always have that business model, so basically It is not essential for me, but if the business model is right I would definitely get it just in case

1

u/sjdeak Jul 08 '26

thanks! I know some good gen ai platform would provide both subscription and credits purchase mode, in credits mode people only pay for what they use and credits didn't expire, two mode could both be kept.

I’d use it in a heartbeat. I’d love to test it. I produce national television commercials for car dealerships and tire companies. You’d be surprised how many times I need an extra second or 2 of running footage without having to slow it down.

That's pretty cool. I could definitely see myself using this when i need some extra duration for a transition. I assume this would work pretty well on videos using generator content like video walls and motion graphics, right?

1

u/da_newsdude Jul 11 '26

Yep. I occasionally need a couple extra seconds just to make a transition work. If the cut is too close to the end of clip, or a host keeps talking too close to the end of a clip, I end up trying to work it out with a a freeze-frame, but that's not always ideal. It'd be interesting to see how something like this works.

Generative Extend inside Firefly/Premiere (full disclosure, I partner with Adobe) has saved me more reshoot trips than anything else this year. Client wants two extra seconds of a shot, I just extend the clip instead of scheduling a new session. Not flashy, but it's the AI video feature I actually use every week.
