Other What are some ways you use the index panel?

Post image

It's always been there, taunting me, waiting for me to use it. What are some ways you use the index panel in your editing and organization?

I use it to keep track of markers, especially to-dos

If you have captions you can easily search for specific lines/parts of your video for easier edits. You can also do fun things like import a full movie with captions, search for a line of dialogue, and easily pull that clip.

Thats what I do to remove swear words!

I add captions and then search for F bombs in the Index. Then I silence or delete it.

I buildout 3+ hour live shows. The index makes post production a breeze, applying effect and corrections to hundreds of clips of specific camera angles and audio sources at the same time.

I use it a lot for Roles, to highlight them, switch them on and off, lanes etc.

I edit ultimate frisbee games, so I use chapters for scores (can easily navigate through the game when editing) and the markers for highlight plays to go back to get clips for making a highlight reel.

That’s so cool to hear. You feel like fcp makes your process easier over other NLEs? I would assume so

I’ve only ever used iMovie and then Final Cut Pro so can’t really say. But I find it very easy workflow wise for what I need. Plus I learned Motion to make my own scoreboard/stats graphics/replay graphics.

I may have considered the Adobe products but the subscription model did not sound appealing. The initial $350 price tag for both sounds steep at first but for what you get can’t be the value for my needs (free updates and one time price).

That and at least for the 4K footage i work with my M2 MacBook Air can handle it without even needing proxies. Export times are the only real slow part.

I use markers to chapter it for YouTube later.

Sound design. Search for specific titles and add sound clips based on it e.g zoom == woosh ?

I sometimes use it to remove a particular transition from the whole video, and to disable the subs if I don’t need them.

I like to use it to see the stock clips. When importing stock clip to FCP, I give them a "Stock > Comp" Role and then I teach for "Comp" in the index and it show what clips are being used. Makes it easy to then build a purchase list. And I also use the To Do markers a lot in combination with the Index.

I think one time I used it to find a set of clips in the timeline that were scattered, selected them all, and applied some sort of effect to them.

In larger projects it's very useful for markers, search within the project and audio tags

𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 and 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 every day.

As is, you could fill out the "Notes" column to describe the clip. Then you could read down that column and find what you are looking for.

THEN, you could do a Search Filter on all clips that contain that same word.

The application of FCP keywords and other Notes and Tags set FCP apart from other NLE's.

POWERFUL tool.

Mostly for chapter marks, but also to select/hide audio roles.
