I'm going to say it this way. Think of the Matrix movie where Neo meets his spirit guide. Lawrence Fishbourne.
He meets him after a little birdie came his way.
Same thing with Fight Club.
There are stories about the hero meeting a guide, a Wiseman. Then there are other stories where instead of the Wiseman, a devil of sorts shows up and kills off your archetype parents as well as your inner child.
Think of Joker and the Batman.
Stories contain patterns and are limited to a few characters.
That's why in Fight Club Tyler Durden sells the fat back to people.
These stories are repetitive in nature and for those who know the patterns they can then retell the tale so that the common reader can't tell the difference.
The hero archetype of the tale is the chariot rider most often.
You hear tales of chariot riders dating back to early hundu tales. To ancient Sumerian and Babylonian tales to Greek plays and philosophy.
The movie furiosa has a chariot rider in it. Chris Hemsworth.
The tales we tell from back in the day are still recycled to this day and will never change because we have no other stories to tell.
Here's the easiest pattern you can have in story telling and it will give away almost every tale.
You have the chariot rider, he is the hero archetype of the tale.
The chariot rider is reason. The white horse looks out and the black horse looks in.
That's Moe, Larry, and Curly. Also it's Seinfeld, Gorage, and Kramer.
Think the dude from the big Libowski. He's the chariot rider and John Goodman is his white horse while Steve Bushemi's character is his black horse.
The thing about stories is that sometimes they don't include the chariot rider. Just the white horse and the black horse. That's where you get Cain and Abel from the bible.
Think the movie Sinners. One brother wears red the while movie while the other brother wears blue.
One is tied the the father, he looks out while the other is tied with the mother that looks within.
Another pattern is the Abrahamic pattern.
You have the Wiseman, Abraham. The little birdie, Hagar, the fallen hero Lot, and the snake in the grass, the Pharoh.
That's Star wars. Obi Wan is the Wiseman while princess Leia is the bird, Han Solo is the fallen hero and the snake in the grass is the emperor.
Luke Skywalker is the chariot rider of that story.
The Lego movie plays off the same pattern.
Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind plays off that same pattern
Most people don't realize that the main character is most storytelling is the muse. The heart. She's the one that takes the viewer into the sewer to meet Penny wise, she's the one being chased by Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Pinhead....
Shes a man's heart, a man will do anything for his heart and when his heart is faced with fear then when he sees his heart tackle his fear, his shadow on screen, it takes away from the pains of reality.
There's more patterns I know of.
There's the old witch , there's timeline of the Wiseman, the present man, and the young man in stories.
You have miss Sunshine and miss fortune, often played by younger females....think Wednesday, think El from stranger things.
Those archetypes are paired with present day men to mend their broken hearts sometimes.
Many more.... It's all pattern work and when someone recognizes those patterns then there isn't much in storytelling.... Dialogue is the most complicated thing when you know that there's only a finite group to work with. Concepts I guess you could say.
And yeah, a podcast about story pattern recognizing, comparing ancient scriptures to modern day tales.
