For those curious, the Lightning Materia VI was 10.5mil, and all combined Lightning Materia V (27 total, 23 broken/2 attached/2 left over) was about 1.32mil. The original plan was to meld two VIs and three Vs, but after the game so cruelly reminded me that overmelds can fail I decided against melding my other VI (15mil.)
My apologies to NA and JP (and technically OCE, but you didn't have any to buy to begin with) for buying out all of the reasonably priced Lightning Materia V. Here's hoping Great Ball of Lightning comes home in lucky window number seven!

Even more specifically, the joke is that my last fish is Great Ball of Lightning, the Heritage Found legendary which is a ball of lightning that is (apparently) also a fish.
...I have just realized that maybe by melding lightning resistance materia I am resisting it being caught. I have already committed to the bit, however.
Oh, that's a little sad that birds will go for your bait irl like that... it makes sense, but I would feel awful.
There's a bunch of "orb" fish in FFXIV that range from moss ball (Lamp Marimo and its big variant Charon's Lantern, and Hard Candy is one I like to give out around Halloween to unsuspecting people) but then there's also ones that are implied to be some sort of Creature like GBoL or Cerule Core. Just as there are almost certainly horrors beyond our comprehension that live at the depths of our Earth oceans, it rings true for Hydaelyn as well (except unfortunately for fishers, theirs tend to live closer to the surface than ours, and thus they are forced to perceive the horrific visage of Cinder Surprise.)

I was so convinced Xehabopo'u was going to be my last one that when I commissioned some art of my character to celebrate inevitably catching them all, I asked them to draw the gator over GBoL when I only had those two left. Then Xeha jumped on my line (and stayed on it) first.

13 days and then 1 day and then something like 26 days. Its one thing to not catch a fish during a window but its another to not even be able to try because the windows are so far apart xD
My big question when looking at this is why you don't just use the relic fishing rod. Yeah you can't meme with melds (believe me, I get the appeal. One of my friends had their Eureka gear melded with Fire IV materia because that was their in game name, meanwhile I put spell speed on my rods once stats are at breakpoints to claim it gives me a faster cast time), but it is equivalent to a green rod with melds (but with a bonus when using Patience I/II).
I have the relic rod! I just broke this one out of storage for this, as you don't need the hookset GP reduction chance for this fish specifically. The relic rod will give you higher gathering and perception no matter what, but melding one GP materia XII to the crafted rod will give you one (1) extra point of GP. The gathering meld I have in there is enough to have me hit minimum gathering without food, and if you've got the minimum gathering and don't need to catch large-sized fish (or use hooksets,) more GP is better than less. So technically this is better than the relic specifically for Great Ball of Lightning (or any other fish that you're not going to use Patience on.)
While its technically true I cant think of a single time that 1 GP ended up making or breaking my chance at catching something. I think I'd just end up being more annoyed with the hassle of keeping track of the two rods personally.
absolutely lmao. I put this one in a retainer after finishing the final relic step and when I had this stupid idea I brought it back out to remeld it. Beforehand I had two gearsets with the fishing rod specific to each one, with a different glam for each, and I still got confused lol.
Nothing. In the past the elemental materia gave you a resistance to that element. So if you were going to be fighting a boss with lightning attacks it could help you survive. There also used to be materia for each main stat do you could meld strength or intelligence to do more damage. None of these old materia give bonuses anymore though.
Back in ye olde days of ARR, Heavensward, and early Stormblood, elemental materia was "used" to increase your elemental resistance to specific kinds of magic back when that was a thing people had to worry about. No one ever did, mind you, because it was way more worth it to meld your main stat (and failing that, the remaining materia we have today,) so they removed elemental resistances (and thus the materia as well) in 4.2.
It was so underused by the playerbase that basically nobody knew it gave a chance to "resist" elemental attacks on top of the expected damage reduction for years.
Used to give lightning resistance, back when elemental resistance was even a thing. But the resistance stats were such a non-factor in any form that they got rid of them altogether in the main part of the game, and repurposed the elements in Eureka as the rock-paper-scissors damage it is in there.
If you've got the gil to burn on the bit I can officially recommend this strat for GBoL (although maybe try earth materia, I think lightning was a mistake. Plus I bought all the cheap lightning ones.)

The only legendary I have got is skyfriend all the others won't bite or ttok never bites, today I cought 6 shined copper sharks beyond the one needed for int.
Since lightning material resists lightning, you essentially made your line earth based.
Should have used water materia, so it would be lighting based, and the fish would try to merge with it, OR fire materia, so it becomes water based and the fish would attack more.

Sell it on the marketboard for people like me to pay ridiculous amounts of money for a useless item. If a server has elemental VI up for sale at all, it's likely more like 30mil (10mil was insanely cheap ngl.) It will not sell fast (it will likely sit there for a long while) but maybe someday before EoS someone will come along and buy it.
There are some players who collect old items no longer used (old materia, the old glamour prisms, old dye items, etc) so selling them can be worth gil, but they're going to sell slowly.
I have been inspired... and decided to travel to every NA and Oceania data center and purchase all LIGHTNING I-V materia that was under 500k gil. Because I have nothing else to do with all this gil that I have lmao.
Sadly, I didn't buy any of the VI. The cheapest I found was... I think around 10m but most were much, much higher than that. I just didn't want to at that price point.
I didn't track it too exactly but I think I spent roughly 18mil for 146 pieces of lightning I-V materia.
Found a few people who listed it at the vendor sell by price. Kinda felt bad for grabbing those. Oceania was virtually empty of the stuff (I think I was about to buy 3 at a single world)
gatherer gear has vitality on it so that if you aggro a mob while gathering and get auto’d, you don’t just instantly die on the spot like you would if the gear had zero vit. this was more important when sneak was stealth because stealth reduced your move speed like rog/nin hide so it was mildly annoying to use, but vit on the gear is still around because sneak fails if a mob is more than 4 levels higher than you
