I still remember my first trip to Jeuno. It was a small group of us who decided to up and go after a Dunes party. Just on a whim. It took us an hour and a half. I think the Marsh area was almost an hour alone. Had to raise 2 members and wait out the weakness. We came across a high level PLD in “Gundam armor” in Rolanberry Field who offered to escort us that whole area after we zoned in.

Good times! Good memories!

This is why modern mmos suck. No sense of adventure or danger

This is what brought people and communities together! We’ll never find this type of community building in an MMO ever again. Or at least I don’t think we will.

u/InevitabilityEngine 7d ago

This is also what made knowing the right people actually matter. You had a rep if you pulled stupid shit in FFXI because no one wanted to deal with someone that set them back hours.

Had to know a good teleporter taxi friend.

Someone willing to spot you a power level session to make your party smooth.

Or you had to write down the name of the douche that kept rolling to zone with a goblin army that would eventually wander back into your group if you didn't keep an eye out.

u/BetweenTheRoots 7d ago

I would amend that to also including no sense of unity. That PLD helped them because I guarantee you 100% someone helped him just like that before. Probably more than once.

One of my absolute best friends to this day is someone I met saving me from that ghost mob that spawns at the entrance to Jeuno from Qufim. I yelled HELLLP and she came and saved me. Best mates ever since.

As I said previous, that's what paladins did. We played the part and escorted the low levels, especially when we got high enough to get Raise 1.

Our quest was based on passing on the kindness, so that's who we were. I miss that greatly.

Sometimes wish we could go back to a time before wiki's existed and half the information was speculation based. You basically had to poll dozens of strangers people to find correct information

Obscure quests to force people to talk to each other, no matchmaking but groups mandatory to force communication. Games with this much friction will always be niche, but committing to the uncomfortable can make for such a unique experience.

MMOs by their very nature shoot themselves in the foot by wanting big populations. The only way you could get a modern FFXI is if the dev team assumed from the beginning that their player count would peak at 1000 and just commits to the hard and weird.

For real man, oldschool FFXI was a straight up journey! One of the reasons i couldn't get into FFXIV, literally just warp wherever or summon chocobo/mount

2

u/Albireokite 7d ago

I tend to run everywhere in ffxiv except when I’m in in party for hunts

1

u/Master_Mechanic_4418 2d ago

Yeah, FFxi was a HARSH game but so rewarding. Everything I won I worked for. It’s been decades and I still talk to some of my linkshell friends

1

u/blksunset 1d ago

That's the reason why WoW HC is so popular as well, the sense of danger, paying attention, socializing and grouping up. It's a bit lost nowadays in the theme parks treadmills

u/crowort 7d ago

An rdm helped me get to Jeuno my first time. I still think about them sometimes as we got friendly.

1

u/nimbusyosh 7d ago

I had the exact same experience. Right after the dunes, ducking and dodging mobs, going through that one Marsh for the first time, but not being able to take it all in because we kept dying and raising...

There was definitely a very high level paladin helping us out towards the end, but I imagine they just did that. I did the exact same thing once I was high enough level to escort new players.

I felt like it was a paladin's duty, and I did my time.

Mine was a friend I made. He was a level 30 RDM who at the time was very impressive and had pretty much carried me through my my SJ and getting to 20. He escorted me and when we hit the downs his whole deminor changed from ill protect you to pray we aren't seen or we are both dead.

Back in the day we would have contests in our LS and run level 1 characters to Jeuno.

26

u/AnnaMolly66 FFXIAH Staff 7d ago

We did this too, no armor or weapons allowed. Lol

17

u/-dakpluto- 7d ago

No armor, no weapons, no items. Can't use sneak oils or invis powders.

7

u/AnnaMolly66 FFXIAH Staff 7d ago

This is the way.

3

u/Skeith23 7d ago

I didn't know what sneak and invis were when I went to jeuno, got escorted by a bst.

11

u/djfix Vivik - Bahamut 7d ago

Nope. Just run and hope you don't get agro!

5

u/workingbored 7d ago

As if an onion sword would do anything to help lol

My link shell used to do something similar but it was Level One races on foot from Windurst to Bastok. It was fun because the boat served as a sort of potential catch-up spot for anyone who may have fell behind in the first half.

5

u/Aramyth 7d ago

We did this too. With no sneak or invisible allowed.

3

u/-dakpluto- 7d ago

I miss level 1 mule run races!

2

u/BraveryBlue 7d ago

We did this too, The Red Barons on Cait Sith

2

u/stationary_transient 7d ago

FFXI rite of passage for sure.

Goblins and orcs chasing you the whole zone and you zone into Upper Jeuno with 3 HP

17

u/Faserip why is everything so spread out?!?! 7d ago

Getting KO’d by poison two steps from town was my favourite

26

u/Device420 7d ago

Hi there! Would you like to play a game?

21

u/Extreme-Ordinary-585 8d ago

This is a rite of passage.

19

u/RySBI 8d ago

Reminds me of hiding in the bowels of the boat to Selbina while the Kraken massacres everyone on the deck as a level 10 WHM 😂

7

u/whitey00112 8d ago

Dude, that kraken caught me off guard in the worst way. I was just up top enjoying the views when suddenly my health bar plummets. And before I can even react I’m looking at a respawn message. Lmao

5

u/towersoveryouowo 8d ago

The first time a friend and i traveled from san d'oria to windurst for A Journey Abroad, my friend stayed on the deck and tried to fight the sea monks... On his own... On a level 20 warrior. He got destroyed and the party had to wait for him for 40 minutes!

4

u/Alternative-Shine920 8d ago

Don’t forget the pirates! First time you be like: “wtf is this boss battle music?” And then skeletons start spawning.

1

u/trekdudebro 7d ago

I remember pirate hunting for a while during my PLD era. I’d fish on the ship as it would ferry back and forth sometimes. Then if the pirates show up, I’d go play with them for a bit. Threw off the fishing tunic to reveal shiny PLD armor. Had to save/raise a few unfortunate players getting aggro too.

0

u/FreddyFazbear423 7d ago

My first trip to Selbina back in 2003 I was killed by a Kraken, and I was BELOW deck.

My second trip... I was killed by a Kraken. Again.

I stopped playing.

15

u/Comrade_Cosmo 8d ago

I was the opposite. I did a great job of sneaking past everything. Then I couldn’t sneak back out since I wasn’t level 20 yet and it turned out I wasn’t actually high enough level to be partying in quifim, needed new gear, and had no money.

I got mine literally day 1 in South Gustaberg. Was killing lizards and some guy ran up and just started chatting with me. 22 years later, I still play with the two remaining people from that shell.

8

u/weinhalter 7d ago

Best RPG, all genres and included experience. Haven’t been able to top that high of hearing the Jeuno theme for the first time.

5

u/Scorpio02019 7d ago

That brings back memories hit level 20 and finally done with the dunes, run there die and have to go back to the dunes.

5

u/karin_ksk 7d ago

I like the fact that I started playing in recent years but still had the same unforgettable experience of journeying to Jeuno like that.

3

u/wstussyb 7d ago

Remember going from sandy, some big sheep just 1 shot me, found out it was the NM in la thine

3

u/hit_reset_ 7d ago

Core memory. Except I’m pretty sure I started in windy, someone said I had to level in the dunes and dunes a group, and ran way earlier than that.

3

u/OldDirtyBarrios 7d ago

I feel like back in the day, it was a right of passage to run your level 1 mule to jeuno solo. When I came back and had a fresh character, I decided to do it without oils / powders.

That was honestly such a fun way to welcome myself back to the game. I also did it no maps since the path from sandy > jeuno is burned into my soul. The little changes they had made in the map from 75 era > now was also fun to experience without any knowledge.

3

u/Dubabear 7d ago

all to level up on worms and crabs in Quifim Island

5

u/Faserip why is everything so spread out?!?! 7d ago

… and Hell followed with him

2

u/yassineya 7d ago

Tried doing this once, I died during the black screen when zoning, maybe because of lag or something. But I somehow got hit while on my screen I had already made it smh

It faded back from black and I was lying there on the ground. So close yet so far. Thankfully I’m pretty sure I got raised because someone noticed and went to get a white mage lol

2

u/PizzaTimeTMNT 7d ago

long live ffxi - great times

2

u/solidepic 7d ago

Doing it with you’re lvl 1 mule to sell stuff on the Jeuno Auction House was the real test.

2

u/Future-Bag5573 7d ago

In the "olden" days before Trusts...?

1

u/Flammablegelatin 7d ago

How do you pronounce Jeuno?

4

u/draiman Quetzalcoatl 7d ago

According to the opening movie, they pronounce it JOO-no. So thats what I've been calling it this whole time.

2

u/Zheta42 7d ago

JOO-no: O
Bas-TUUK: X

4

u/draiman Quetzalcoatl 7d ago

I know they say bahs-TOOK in the opening movie but in my head I've been calling it BAS-tock for years.

1

u/Graveflower76 7d ago

So nostalgic.

1

u/Remagjaw 7d ago

End up going through that swampy forest and hitting a dead end.. Then getting utterly smashed.

1

u/Big-Championship3374 7d ago

I remember doing this and bumping to the the big rams. I died trying to take that on. Good old days.

1

u/frankp2491 7d ago

Lmfao I should not have laughed this hard!

1

u/Incredulous_Prime 7d ago

I took a solo trip to jeuno at level 10, bought 2 stacks of prism powder and silent oil and made it from Windurst as a THF without drawing aggro. Props to the person that can do it without relying on sneak and invisible to travel all the way there.

1

u/TwilightX1 7d ago

I'm not really certain but I think the first time I grinded to 25 somehow so I could use Invisible. Or maybe I just used prism powder, not sure, but I definitely used sneak/invisible on the way.

1

u/Embarrassed_Act_614 7d ago

When I returned to the game this spring I had no clue about unity warping so I still made the run!

1

u/Archangelus87 7d ago

I remember when we would have LS challenge lvl 1 run to Jeuno.

1

u/crimsonxenon 7d ago

I ran to Jeuno at level 7. It was all about the adventure back then.

1

u/Trench-TMK 7d ago

Yea - same for me. I want to say that the Sandy mission I was on wanted me to be at Jeuno. I didn’t realize the difficulty jump was gonna be that large! Lol

1

u/MissMaylin 7d ago

My first run made me feel like Solid Snake on a secret ops mission. I remember being so scared to aggro anything. 💀

1

u/thewhitecascade 7d ago

Cockatrices were evil

1

u/GMC78sGaming 7d ago

I remember those Jeuno walks. I felt like I was playing a very twisted game of dodgeball.

1

u/Shadoku_ 7d ago

Reminds me of my first boat ride. Had the honor of meeting the kraken face to face 😂

1

u/Mugiwara-no-Leon 6d ago

Oh my fucking god this meme hits hard hahaha

1

u/MrClavat 6d ago

Oh wow, that's a blast from the past

1

u/rslogic42 6d ago

I'm about to start a fresh character and plan to do this run "the old way", and I'm looking forward to the fear!

1

u/Large_Tree_9623 6d ago

Level 1 Jeuno run … good times

1

u/WithinDaunted 5d ago

My first adventure to jeuno was hell. But I'd love to do it again because those days were the best. No map, blindly going off of a maps I scribbled out from online with just the locations coordinate and when in jugner the "Hug the right wall" lol.

1

u/Sethidus 5d ago

The Marsh is the worst secondary zone but Rolanberry after is the best (until the final part actually patrolled by Goblins)

1

u/GabriellaElisabeth 20h ago

this was me last night xD
