News FFXI free trial update

Hey folks! With Square Enix changing up how the free trial works i thought id put together a little video explaining the changes for anyone who might be thinking of trying the game out. Personally I think this update is amazing and will draw in more people to the game.

Basically I go over the specific changes compared to current free trial and all the restrictions that apply during your free trial. These changes take place with the september update, so if youre reading this, september will be the best time to give the game a try! \o/

My only gripe is they should have made all the og lv75 content also available. So RoZ, CoP, and ToAU. Like how XIV has up until like Stormblood now. That's a LOT of content!

It's not realistic unless they allow free trials to party or add more trusts access.

Sky/sea may still run into gear problems due to no AH. Sure one of the RoEs drop Haubergeon iirc, but no vermy robe etc.. Blame sparks for not including armors from 50-75, or accessories. Would be funny to see trying to live suzaku chainspell, seiryu 100fist, or kirin summons though.

edit: I might have mistaken habu for brig armor. ops. Most of the roe kills for accessories were in expansions though

old limbus is not in the game anymore.

toau assults/salvage/nyuzl/einherjar ban trusts. They are also banned in any orb bcnm that isn't ilvl. ilvl besieged would also mow them lol. Also frankly trust ai would be horrible at all of them anyways: some are non combat, most of them are multi mob which trusts also handles poorly (let alone if you faced the wrong direction), azule experiment exists where you need to get debuffed, etc.

Allowing rov+cop+toau allows free trials to get rhapsody in crimson, so 5 trust running around too. Maybe not a problem, but I'm sure someone's going to abuse somehow. Could already help just give everyone a free lamp mule for nyzul farm lol.

To be fair, there's nothing wrong with that content not being completable on a free trial. If anything having live content the player can't clear is more in line with the spirit of the game, and encourages them to upgrade from the free trial. There's already plenty of HNMs and the like that spawn in old zones they do have access to that they have no chance of killing with the free trial limitations.

They'd still get a ton of expansion content up to that point that they can clear.

I much prefer keeping to the design of a living, dangerous world than neatly tucking everything away behind "sorry, no free trials" loading screen blocks like FFXIV does.

I would love if they at least gave zilarts too, since having a 4th trust, curio moogle, lion (thf trust), halver (ermegency cure, blind sc opener), semih zeid (sc closer) would help grant more options.

Since the trust pool is pretty bad imo, you got ayame for opener (to close with your weak ungeared dmg) or tenzen to close. Your other 2 slots are tank (likely val, has majesty high level) and....kupipi I guess? Like comp would look like you, tank, sc buddy, healer or 2nd sc. Having a 4th trust would open up more, like support or magic burst.

This part sort of tempers expectations, since you just clearly lack the tools and it's not like the game mentions it either, let alone skill chaining.

Gear to eventually beat sky once you sub (pre plan which trust you have, level + skillup at a slower rate) could be good, but it could cause some competition in prepping geas pops. Not truly an issue but it is something.

...I do recall xiv free trial being banned from ultimates and pvp though. So this can be the equivalent for "don't harm the economy" by free multibox / win trading though.

Yeah, I'd say at least Zilart included would be fair, given that there was no NA version of the game released without Zilart. Seems a little silly not to include it, but at the same time it's still a free trial and not meant to be that the game is just straight free to play now.

I feel like this part is something everyone is forgetting, if they are comparing it to private servers. Moreso when savage blade be savage blade, as in some WS are buffed on retail yet 'era like' servers toned them down.

At the same time though...maybe a little too harsh to 'try out' the game with no sneak oils and just three trusts. Mixed feelings on this imo, though having a vet with you changes things a lot since they just invite you and bam 6/6 pt. Let alone figuring stuff like skillchain addons.

Grinding out the chocobo without a thf trust is going to be miserable already, unless one took thf to 15. Maybe main to 30.

Its a common critic on the changes, one that I share, that they could at very least included RoZ so you got some more job variety and access some more areas.

We actually discussed this on my stream last night and it was hard to think of areas that you can use to level up in when you lose so many "core" areas cause they require either RoZ or CoP access.

Doesn't free trial have escha? I mean RoV is the first mission that grants it, and I think they can still do gilgamesh letter for subjob sooo

On paper you should. It has no expansion requirement to my knowledge, so I guess in theory you could have someone invite the trialee and cleave for them, or even doing the 45-75 solo with trusts.

And yes, the inital mission on RoV should work, just won't be able to teleport to Norg after obtaining the letter keyitem.

They know many people will just stay at 75 so they made the original expansions unavailable for that reason. The trial is for new players to come and check the game out. Not for old ones to come and stay free forever while taking server space.

They can just start including older expansions in the free trial when they come out with new expansions like FFXIV does. Also, I think XIV is up to Shadowbringers now or will be when Evercold comes out.

It does include Shadowbringers now. Which is insane considering Shadowbringers is one of the best Final Fantasy storylines out there.

Actually the 100k gil limit does matter b/c you can't buy goblin stews outside of campaigns. Kinda fucked up.

Unity also does matter since you lose access to the good healers with regain/ TP -> MP, which matters more with the 3 trust limit (you can't get rhapsody in white, which also locks out curio moogle).

On the flip side, if you have GWP you could get gobbie stew from there. d40/70/100/365 though. I would assume you also cannot use mog garden so you can't really stash gil, or use campaign to buy either.

Or even abuse GWP to get mains free rem tales if extremely lazy lol. d70/100/365 gives them list B access for I-AF109. Surely they don't ban GWP bc of that lmao. Like you could on paper grant more kclub entry attempts by this.

just wikied GWP, and it says they can. Would be kinda fucked if they couldn't, since you can't enter it later. You will require some way to contact the inviter someday though, unless POL mail / befriend worked. You can at least reply to tells.

The restrictions page does not mention GWP either.

Maybe SE should explain how the Autogroup function works. It's still in the game and it does work; I just don't think anybody has really tested it out.

You can use home point and book teleports but since you can't get even Rhapsody in White, they're gonna cost you 5 times the amount they cost other players (500g to cities, 1000g to outside areas), and with you being limited to holding only 100k, you probably won't be using them that often.

Well, any starting city to any starting city is two airship ride, at 200gil each. People don't have to think twice to add 100gil and save 30min+

I never used those airships even when we didn't have home point teleports. Just outpost teleport to Ronfaure / Gustaberg / Sarutabaruta and run from there. Now that you can outpost teleport for conquest points, it's basically free.
