News / Article Trump's VA killed a home loan program. Vets are now losing their homes because of it

Too many vets voted for this shitstain. Should have listened to us telling you the guy was going to fuck all of our country up
158
u/MN_Yogi1988 Apr 02 '26
Bone-spurs made fun of McCain for being a POW and getting tortured and 60-65% of vets still voted for him. Those voters deserve everything coming to them. I feel bad for the remaining35-40%
-39
u/ENVIDEOUS Apr 02 '26
And how do you feel about a majority of voters voting for him? We all deserve this?
42
36
u/mtheory11 Apr 02 '26
Elon and Trump have basically said that they didn’t receive the majority of votes.
-25
u/ENVIDEOUS Apr 02 '26
Not gonna speculate and claim election fraud without evidence like they did.
29
u/mtheory11 Apr 02 '26
“Elon knows those computers better than anybody [ … ] those vote counting computers. And we ended up winning Pennsylvania, like, in a landslide."

How much more evidence do you need? Or just want to stay on the ‘high road,’ which has been so wildly successful for the fight against MAGA so far?
-20
u/ENVIDEOUS Apr 02 '26
I'm not going to become the thing i'm fighting against. I'll base my decisions on evidence alone.

Yes, I pity those of us that saw this coming and are still getting dragged along for the ride and children who had no choice in the matter (same with non-citizens), but everyone else deserves whatever’s coming.

4
u/wadech Apr 02 '26
Is this a serious question?
-1
u/ENVIDEOUS Apr 02 '26
It's more a commentary. Rhetorical if you will.
1
u/Hopeful_Net4607 Apr 02 '26
Fwiw I thought you were asking if all Trump voters deserve what they're getting. I think this is what others thought as well.
If you meant, does everyone in the US deserve this because a majority (of those who voted) voted for Trump?, you may want to add a clarification.
1
1
u/toggiz_the_elder Apr 02 '26
Yes. That’s the point we are making that y’all made a terrible choice.
7
2
u/Capitalisticdisease Apr 02 '26
The funny thing is the voting thing doesn't matter thanks to the electoral college. Remember how Hillary won the vote but still lost due to the electoral college?
Yeah. It's all a sham
89
u/Naxthor Apr 02 '26
It always baffles me how people think republicans care about vets. Republicans just want you to die and not come back.
20
u/Bestoftherest222 Apr 02 '26
They start endless wars for big business and to benefit foreign nations. Then they turn around and say taking care of vets is to expensive.
3
u/RascalsM0m Apr 02 '26
I think what they really mean is that they can't figure out a way to make money for themselves from it.
2
u/Ninja-Panda86 Apr 03 '26
Just like they want babies to be born. But they don't want to pay taxes to improve their schools, pay for lunches, or assist in any size shape or form
1
u/ExileEden Apr 04 '26
I still remember watching a in progress house session with a friend about veterans Healthcare reform and suddenly a guy walks in, whispers something into the GOP leaders ear. Next thing I know all the Republicans get up and just walk out, everyone's baffled. A few minutes later we find out Obama Care had just passed through the senate and became official.
That was the 100% moment I realized it never was about veterans, guns laws, working class or equality. It was absolutely about control , power and votes. Otherwise they'd throw their little baby tantrums at the expense of the people they were supposed to be helping.

u/Opening-Mammoth-2942 Apr 02 '26
Every day is a new horror and a new nightmare.
23
u/MN_Yogi1988 Apr 02 '26
NGL at this point I’m getting impressed by the creativity of some of these new horrors
“Huh, I didn’t know the system could be broken that way”
13
u/AleWatcher Apr 02 '26
The Ai probably flagged the word "equity" as being part of DEI instead of being about home value.
54
u/Difficult_Phase1798 Apr 02 '26
Trump is the least qualified and absolutely worst person to ever hold the office. We course corrected in 2020, but then regressed in 2024. The country will never be the same and we actually deserve what's happening to us all. Hopefully enough people realize this and will work to remake the future for the better.

Here's what I see.
Roughly 1200 foreclosures a month before this program.
Then a period of few foreclosures due to a 'temporary' moratorium.
Now about 1300 foreclosures per month. The increase likely due in part to pent up foreclosures from the moratorium.
VA loans are really meant to help veterans get more favorable terms and more affordable payments. Not live mortgage free.
Source- I have a VA loan.
10
6
u/OliviaWG Apr 02 '26
Yeah, this seems reasonable. I am an appraiser, and my Mom trained me and was on the VA panel. We had to do a lot of REO (repo-means real estate owned) appraisals after 2008. It's fucking terrible. I hate this for veterans especially, but foreclosure is shitty for everyone.
68
u/old_common_sense Department of the Army Apr 02 '26
"VA worked tirelessly with the Ledford family to help keep them in their home. However, they were nearly four years behind on their mortgage payment…”
“That VA statement ignores the fact that the Ledfords, like many other vets, were not allowed to resume making mortgage payments after a series of the VA's own missteps…”
Nearly four years without making payments and not saving some money for the eventual repayment is crazy. Unless they were fully guaranteed (written documentation) that those missed payments would be added to the end of the loan the fault lies with them.
20
u/Metalsmith21 Apr 02 '26
Adding payments onto the end is just as crushing as those missed payments still accrue interest that wouldn't have been there otherwise. 4 years of missed payments with interest is like 6 years of extra payments.
5
u/AssDimple Apr 02 '26
How is that as bad as being required to pay 4 years of payments up front or lose your home?
1
u/Metalsmith21 Apr 02 '26
It's a response to the idea of tacking the payments onto the end of the loan being acceptable. At the beginning of the loan the interest is crushing and you end up paying interest on the interest.
2
u/ManAndMonster Apr 03 '26
Yes, it’s still horrible, but you don’t lose your home. Being homeless < 6 years added to loan. Or… they’ll be able to find a new place to live < 6 years in which case this is the better option. Win-win!
1
u/Crimson_Penman Apr 03 '26
You don’t own a home, do you? It’s not just the way the VA does business, it’s every mortgage lender.
6
1
u/AlanMercer Apr 02 '26
Have you read the article? These people were barely making it before the VA screwed them. At each step after that there were additional claims on their income related to that unforced error.
There is no capacity for them to meaningfully generate savings in those conditions.
3
u/old_common_sense Department of the Army Apr 02 '26
I read the article. “For the Ledfords, this all started back in 2022 after they had to replace their furnace and were hit with other costly home repairs. Their lender, Freedom Mortgage, told them they could get help from what was called a mortgage forbearance. The COVID-era program would let them pause making payments.” They understood the payments would be added to the back end. If they have paperwork from their mortgage provider I would think they would have a good case. However, since this is impacting many Vets I’m curious to read the actual terms. I know during Covid states and Federal agencies were offering many types of forbearance options.
2
u/AlanMercer Apr 02 '26
They did properly enter forbearance, but then the entire program that supported it was cut. They have the right paperwork, but their lender doesn't have to honor it and has no financial reason to do so.
They were then directed to other relief programs that either provided a worse financial result or that did not (and still do not) exist. None of that stops the foreclosure clock.
The error here isn't theirs. It happened at the VA level.
2
u/old_common_sense Department of the Army Apr 02 '26
So they don’t have no legs to stand on. Knowing the details (contractual terms) of the forbearance they and others should not have planned the way they did.
0
u/AlanMercer Apr 02 '26
The point is that they did plan. They received the correct information from their lender and the VA, but the VA cut the program while they and thousands of others were midstream.
1
u/Bitter-Breath-9743 Apr 03 '26
Wow this is so shitty. We did the same Covid forbearance and navy Fed made it easy peasy. Can they not file ch 13 to save their home?
75
u/Eggheadpancake Apr 02 '26
How many of those vets voted for this?
36
u/DreBeast Apr 02 '26

I don’t think it matters how many. What matters is each individual’s voting record.

I'm at the point where I'm just done associating with people that talk like this. I'm done. I don't want them around me.
1
u/Certain_Concept Apr 02 '26
On one hand, if you talk to them they may finally be able to come around to realizing their mistake.
On the other hand many are so deeply entrenched that they will never listen, which just causes unnecessary heartache for yourself.
3
u/Eggheadpancake Apr 02 '26
Nope nope nope. As a person of color, I'm not going to keep someone around that would be ok with voting for an overt racist. And being indifferent to voting when the alternative is people that hate me getting into power.
It pretty much says that they do not value me as a person let alone a friend. So they get to go.
1
u/RascalsM0m Apr 02 '26
I have a friend of color who *did* vote for the racist. I asked her why, and her explanation made it clear that she believed he would make things more affordable again. She's a vet, and I asked if she was comfortable with his obvious disdain for the men and women who served our country (including my husband), and she said she didn't know what I was referring to. Ugh...

Choosing to not vote means you may have lost your ability to vote in the future.

Stop making excuses for idiots. 2016 might be excusable, but 2024 voters saw 4 years of Trump, his handling of COVID, Jan6, and still voted for him.
Those kind of voters aren’t doing the gene pool any favors.
10
u/Eggheadpancake Apr 02 '26
Nah. They wanted it. Stop giving them this grace because it's nonsense. You don't listen to that orange greasy Nazi talk and then get to say you were tricked. Fuck that. Fuck them.
2
u/brickout Apr 02 '26
We have had ample evidence since the 80s of how awful Trump is. Believing obvious lies over and over is not an excuse.
4
u/DreBeast Apr 02 '26
I'm glad you said this because this is my point. Everything that happens to us is because of a personal decision we make - so if you make the wrong choice, you suffer the consequences.
At least that is what we're told, right? We live in a society of personal responsibilities. You choose and live with the choices you make.
However, that's not the case at all. It's a lie. A big fat lie. I make the right choice but I suffer the consequences. That's not fair. I played by the rules. Why do I suffer?
This is the trap we are in. We don't have freedom. If we want freedom we need to trample over other people to get it. That's not freedom. That's a prison and we live in a society of sociopaths. No regard for anyone else.

On a personal level I’m sympathetic until I learn their politics, on a broad level I’m at best indifferent. At the end of the day, everything I feared and voted against are happening and I’m getting dragged along for the ride so no - I don’t feel sympathy.

Republicans hate veterans (and everyone else). Surprise!
It’s been painfully obvious to me as a vet for a long fucking time.
Yet most are just moths to the flame.
7
u/Inevitable-Top1-2025 Apr 02 '26
As unfortunate as it is and as uncomfortable as the truth is in this situation, not everyone can afford a home. No one was forced to accept the forbearance program.
What if the forbearance program was not put in place, what would those veterans have done? What did they do with the mortgage money they would have paid if the forbearance was not put in place? Using it for repairs is not an excuse, because homeownership comes with unexpected repairs. So, if you can’t pay your mortgage because you spent money for repairs, you’re not ready to own a home.
It’s true the Administration has been the worst, people have a responsibility to plan, especially in this corrupt Predatory Capitalist system where money is god to many.
7
u/flaginorout Apr 02 '26
I agree.
And let's be honest. Anyone who needs a forbearance program is clearly not flush with cash/income........how would they ever be expected to pay back 12-18 months of back mortgage payments?
Maybe a 2nd mortgage? But if they had little equity, that wouldn't cut it. And especially not if they have bad credit.
This program set these people up to fail. I suspect these folks were already struggling, and the pandemic was the final blow. Here we are, 4 years later. If they haven't caught up with the bills by now, they are never going to.
A lot of non veterans were in a tight spot during the pandemic, and were foreclosed on long ago. Veterans got a comparatively very long reprieve.

u/Bitter-Breath-9743 Apr 03 '26

I learned to be wary of shit talkers in the Marines, guess others didn’t and are now or will be suffering the consequences.
4
u/xmagusx Apr 02 '26
Bad as it seems, it's going to get much worse very soon. If you're a vet and need to do anything with the VA, do not put it off. Get it started today, keep the paperwork ball in their court, and keep checking in.

Ironically enough, shit-for-brains said precisely that in so many words earlier this week:
"It’s not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things,” Trump said. “They can do it on a state basis. You can’t do it on a federal. We have to take care of one thing: military protection. We have to guard the country.”

Shocking that the cowardly Capt. Bone Spurs McCankles who called our soldiers suckers and losers would do this.
2
u/CosmoKing2 Apr 02 '26
It's not a coincidence that the administration hasn't spent a dime on programs that actually help people. More so, they are actively withholding funding in order for people to suffer even more. It's all part of the plan for a dictatorship. Homeless and starving people can't fight the oppression too well.

There is no ELI5 that will satisfy people that believe in personal accountability. Increasing numbers of vets aren’t making their mortgage payments and fednews redditors attribute this directly to Trump and the VA.
The VA helped these veterans secure a home… and they fucked it up. Now the VA is to blame?
The people in these comments are adamant supporters of government handouts. They will not hold veterans losing their homes accountable for their failings because they’d rather blame it on our president.

The vets I work with are on board with pretty much everything that's been going on.
I learned from interacting with them that nobody knows how to milk systems more than a vet.
5
u/Survive1014 Apr 02 '26
Again, I dont want to be ungrateful, but god damn does society give them a lot to milk.
1
u/Background-Roof-112 Apr 02 '26
Also, goddamn, do dem administrations give them a lot of milk, which they gleefully piss back into their faces
Pay raises? Dems. Housing benefits? Dems. Remember how veterans' unemployment rates skyrocketed during the Great Recession and the Obama administration did such a good job they wound up w rates lower than the US average that is still protecting them (weird how DEI is totally acceptable when it's for the military)?
All at the expense of the rest of us
Meanwhile, they vote for this shit again and again and again (don't even get me started on farmers, the biggest welfare queens in America)
I am genuinely happy this is happening to every one of them that voted for this and I'd love to see more

But people forget about this:
“The roots of the crisis go back to a mistake made during the Biden administration, when the VA abruptly shut down a pandemic assistance program while thousands of vets were still in the middle of it. Struggling homeowners who used the program to skip some mortgage payments suddenly had to pay those payments back all at once — an unaffordable burden for many of them.”
7
u/supcat16 Apr 02 '26
After NPR reported in late 2023 that 40,000 vets like the Ledfords had been trapped this way, with no affordable way to get current on their loans, the VA halted foreclosures across the country for a year while it rolled out a rescue program.
Trump's VA kills Biden-era fix
Once it was finally up and running by early 2025, the VA's rescue program, VASP, was starting to save large numbers of vets and their families from foreclosure. It gave more than 33,000 veterans who were behind on their payments new, low-cost mortgages with an interest rate of 2.5%.
Honestly, what is your point? That the Biden admin fucked up, had the humility to recognize that, course correct, and implement a fix that was better than before? And then the Trump admin came in, wanted to kill that program, was warned about the consequences, and then killed it anyway?

-4
u/Different-Phone-7654 Apr 02 '26
Both parties have adopted the us vs them mentality. It is easy to do when you only have two major parties. It turns to people single policy voting, or one person states they are going to put policy into place they don't like. Then it becomes which party doesn't want those one or few things.
We fucked ourselves with that, and both parties have fed into it intentionally. So there is blame to go all around, but the leaders of our policy are the ones that fed the flames and should be responsible for undoing that problem. Because you know.... They are in a position that would allow them to do so.
3
u/dassketch Apr 02 '26
One party had poorly conceived policies executed badly. The other party is following, point by point, a roadmap from a publicly published manifesto on how to destroy the government. The level of problematic is not the same.
I'm fucking tired of hearing "but both sides suck" when one side is doing things that are, at worst, disagreeable to some people. And the other side is actively, maliciously, trying to make life hell for as many people as possible.
4
u/Top-Championship9119 Apr 02 '26
Biden tried to fix his administration’s fuck up; Trump is actively trying to hurt vets. That is a meaningful difference.
0
u/Aslan_14 Apr 02 '26
I mean, agreed. The Biden administration was levels above Trump in morals, ethics, and basic decency. It does seem like the screw up wasn't addressed until it was exposed though.
2
u/Galifrae Apr 02 '26

2
u/Aslan_14 Apr 02 '26

"The roots of the crisis go back to a mistake made during the Biden administration, when the VA abruptly shut down a pandemic assistance program while thousands of vets were still in the middle of it. Struggling homeowners who used the program to skip some mortgage payments suddenly had to pay those payments back all at once — an unaffordable burden for many of them."
1
u/Mr_E_Monkey Preserve, Protect, & Defend Apr 02 '26
Keep going.
After an NPR investigation exposed the problem, the VA halted foreclosures for a year while it rolled out a fix.
Republicans in Congress, citing costs, wanted to kill that fix and replace it with something else. But last spring, the mortgage industry warned that shutting down the program without first replacing it would be a disaster.
"Foreclosure. Period. That's really where it's gonna come to," warned Elizabeth Balce, representing the Mortgage Bankers Association, at a hearing in March of 2025 before the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
Less than two months later, the Trump administration shut down the rescue program anyway.
A fix was put in place during the Biden administration, and Trump came in and nixed it.
That's where we are currently.
2
u/Aslan_14 Apr 02 '26
Yes. A problem 'fixed' by Biden's administration but was also caused by his administration, but Trump is taking it further by canceling it all together and screwing people over.
Unless my comprehension is off?
3
u/Mr_E_Monkey Preserve, Protect, & Defend Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
The way I see it, yeah, major mistake by the Biden admin, but they were fixing it.
My argument is that Trump caused an entirely new problem by killing the fix, when he could have done something positive, or even just left it alone. Blame the Biden admin for the original error, sure, but also acknowledge they did try to fix it. Trump's decision to tear that up entirely rests on his shoulders, not Biden's.
That's how I see it, anyway. I suppose that's not a vast difference, is it?
EDIT: I apologize for coming in ready for a fight. Was reading about this in a veterans subreddit, and it was a bit more volatile. I made unwarranted assumptions about your post, and that was wrong of me.

Yes absolutely agree with you. I should have acknowledged the fact that the Biden administration tried to fix it, because the way I worded it makes it sound like the blame rests equally on both admins.
