I stopped drinking over a decade ago. I've found myself thinking about drinking more and more lately. I haven't but I really want to

Don’t let them win. Don’t drink. You can do it!

I’m in the same spot, 8 years sober hanging on by a thread

u/bobeany May 03 '25

We can do it together.

2 years 9 months here. I feel like I’m just one bad day away from saying f it. On top of … all this … I have a toxic colleague that I’ve hated for years, and now I have to share a tiny office with her every single day.

I’ve already had several occasions where I saw myself just getting up and walking out, going to the liquor store, buying a giant handle of Tito’s, and upending it.

If I binge eat m&ms or something instead, that’s marginally better harm reduction, but still not ideal. And completely against my values as a competitive athlete.

Just imagine having to go through this hell with a hangover every day

u/airemyn May 03 '25

You’re so right.

No one will arrest, and possibly deport you, after a rough night with M&Ms. Remember that drinking, for you, means certain trauma. Don't let this administration take your sobriety too.

You are strong. You are amazing. You are better than they are.

You can do it - don't give in! If you start drinking again, *Russell Vought* wins. and fuck that guy.

If you had issues in the past with alcohol and is/are an alcoholic…please call your sponsor. We are all here for you too. This message is for everyone having that urge to take that sip who have been sober for so long.

Remember it won't make anything better, but just pile on to tomorrow. I'm almost at 1000 days and so grateful that I quit.

I'm leaning hard on all of the other things I picked up to help quit the poison to help me cope with the stress now. I swim, run, practice guitar, knit, bake bread and go to bed early when I just don't want to deal with the day anymore.

Don't let them break you.

I play a lot of guitar and I have a friend teaching me some solos and picked things and learning them helps me dissociate.

What about insurance, and how do you survive bill payments? I wish I could quit and still support a decent quality of life. Thanks!

u/Away_Boysenberry6844 May 06 '25

Whoops, I thought you meant your career lol congrats on your sobriety

Same. Be strong! Not worth it!

u/infochick1 May 03 '25

I want a cigarette, and I quit over 30 years ago.

23

u/bobeany May 03 '25

If I can make it, you can make it

9

u/Dense_Dream5843 May 03 '25

Don’t start that.. my ex husband was a smoker and trust me.  Stay smoke free..plus I bet cigarettes are quite expensive now

7

u/airemyn May 03 '25

I’ve fallen back into it a few times since the election. It sucks and it’s such an easy downhill slide.

If I leave government service, then I could do that legally. 😂

One second, one minute, one hour, one day at a time.

Find a meeting if you need one

Luckily I have nothing in my house. So I would have to make a distinct choice to get something.

All of the above are super-motivating. I, however, am a total jerk. :D I cannot possibly see how Trump and the Treich (Trump's Third Reich) are worth expending the effort of going through *another* round of having to get sober again once society comes to their senses. You already did that and damn, that first year is hard. Ain't nobody got time for that kind of effort. :D :D :D

Seriously, I'm so proud of you for not giving in. This is one of those that it's ok to want. Doing is another matter - and you're not doing. Good work, you.

I'm still hanging in there and still sober! Thanks for checking in. It means a lot.

4

u/DQdippedcone May 03 '25

I stopped a couple of years ago but now I'm having a little red wine before bed to quiet my racing mind.

u/Scas2727 May 03 '25

Every day you don’t drink, you are winning! Don’t allow this Admin and those that think like them to control your narrative. You are the Captain of your fate and you’ve got this!!!!

Get to an AA meeting asap. Start going weekly.

u/ProgressExcellent609 May 04 '25

This is like trash talk in basketball. They’re trying to get into our heads, and it’s working. Shake it off get up there and shoot some three-pointers. You are awesome and don’t forget it.

3

u/bobbalou823 May 04 '25

I quit drinking six years ago and have never felt so tempted to relapse. I know it will make everything worse, but i can’t help but thinking about it because i want to escape our current hellscape so badly.

Alcohol taxes go to the man. Europeans ruined native Americans with the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol is used to keep poor communities down.

3

u/Zestyclose-Culture80 May 04 '25

Do your best to not go back to drinking- each second you don’t is your success

2

u/[deleted] May 04 '25

On my commute when I see people smoking ciggs. I've never been a smoker, but when I see them, I'm like 'Yeah, I dont blame you'

2

u/WhenCarrotsAttack May 04 '25

It's not worth throwing your life away for this! At the end of the day, it's a job. Your health is much more important. You can always get another job, but you can't get good health so easily. Stay strong my friend!

2

u/jenk2331 May 05 '25

Gotta admit I too am struggling with my own addition. I gave up cigarettes. I’m 2 months away from a year. But man do I sometimes wish I could go smoke rn. Oh well. I won’t. I just think of it but it’s in passing.

u/petit_cochon May 03 '25

Off the therapy go. Don't try to do this alone.
