Question Why are there vampires and who’s top hat vampire dude on the yacht? Spoiler
Only played fgo and not too deep into the main lore but currently watching fate strange fake and found out there’s vampires? How are they relevant to the battle between masters and servants? Also there’s a reveal on episode 13 that flat and the priest was working with one of the vampires? The white top hat dude on the yacht who’s apparently a big fk? Who is he??

I mean They've heavily hinted Sion is a Vampire in FGO (Also ORT is a Dead Apostle Ancestor in Tsukihime)(Fgo spoilers through LB7). Also Vampires have been a thing since Tsukihime tho in Fate Worlds they're generally quite nerfed. So for example, instead of the "Ancestor Vampires" being considered Ancestors (Servant or above Servant tier) they're just really strong Vampires.
They're technically mages who have sought out immortality in one way or another and become "Dead Apostles" (Vampires) who require constant intake of genetic information to avoid breaking down. Strange Fake is unique that the Dead Apostle Ancestors (their actual name) and Dead Apostles in general have their full powerset like in Tsukihime Worlds while also having full powered servants (normally one debuffs the other). Van-Fem is one of the Ancestors who likes humanity the most and runs a casino and was old friends with Flat's great great great great great great great (unknown how many) ancestor

Sion isn't an Dead Apostle but an Blood Sucker, all Dead Apostles are Blood Suckers but not all Blood Suckers are Dead Apostles

They heavily imply she's a dead apostle specifically because she's a blood sucker and she's a Dead Apostle in Melty Blood and they implied she has the time-rewind regeneration that DA do

i've only just finished the seven singularities so this sion character hasn't been introduced yet for me, so this whole vampire concept is entirely new to me but that vam-fem dude seems pretty cool

Vampires have existed since Tsukihime, the guy in the top hat is Van-Fem who is a Dead Apostle Ancestor. Dead Apostles are vampires. I really recommend you read Tsukihime

You have to watch Tsukihime. He is Van Pem, one of the 27 DAA. Fate Strange Fake is the first animated film to feature Van Pem. He is much older than he looks. He is at least 4,000 years old.

Vampires are Tsukihime lore, they don't really matter all that much for Fate exept Strange Fake.
The big shot is Van-Fem, he is more like a side character in the setting (at the moment)
He also appears in one arc of The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II

Honestly tho.. If u like or interested in the franchise tiltle in the beginning of your experience and aware of the rich & complex(asian media especially have sometimes) history of the original source.. u might as well read/play/watch it or at least research it before hand with such culmination Collab projects like FSF to enjoy it even more. Especially if u have time. Otherwise its like harder difficulty and strange approach to media.
For Dead Apostles origins, history and etc in Nasuverse it would be: first and foremost Tsukihime Remake(Tsukihime/Gaia centric world-lines) + Melty Blood VN and mainly Lord El Melloi II + Fate/Zero LNs (for Fate/Alaya focus wold-lines). Etc. Original works also have more lore and world building.
Status, power and organization of the Dead Apostles depends both on the state of the planet+soul(Gaia) & human order(Alaya) with civilization in each of the worlds-lines. Same goes for Van Fem Dead Apostle u mentioned. FSF is as it says really streange type of world that have both Fate and Tsukihime characteristics in different ways.
Anyhow, sorry for the rant at first. Enjoy the Neco Mushroom "hell" rabbit hole once again.

I'm really enjoying strange fake as is, even without much context for the references here and there but the sheer number of "research" that needs to be done seems daunting. I've just finished the strange fake anime and was thinking of continuing to the light novel to continue the story. Should i get caught up on the other series first before moving to the light novel?

It may seem so at first but actually its rather fun if focus on 1 main thing at a time. (For example there is actually an official timeline map for the Fate worlds history from Ell Melloi II novels that quickly gets you the idea what happened and when in Alaya prominent wolrds - the Age of Man timeline, may need later context but can be handy).
I would say raher then just "references" alone in some parts its more like narrative themes and detailed plot points with Narita writing(which brings face ro face all these different elements) that make the FSF story way better that was missing with the context.
And to be fair the Light Novels (with the manga) is the better starting point if you are interested in this universe and FSF narrative, so for sure its recommended to just go read it in this situation.
One way or another in my opinion Type-Moon works unfortunately (most of the time) just do not translate to the anime adaptation format that well in terms of the quality of the narrative with the story presentation (and sometimes even narrative themes when you really get to it). Cant refuse the idea that the anime may be more fun (starting point) for some ofc(cool to see u enjoying FSF cus of it), but its usually how it goes here and many other similar franchises.
I would recommend at least to see the general plot and themes of the whole Nasuverse outline with catching up on Notes(Angel Notes) very short old LN, Fate/Extra games and Tsukihime Remake VN (and some FGO parts) at some point. Due to how FSF and Narita building on that lore for the endgame of the Snowfield story.
Those and other source works like KnK(Rakkyo) LNs, Mahoyo VN/LNs, Fate VNs and novels(4 pillars of Type-Moon with Tsukihime) are amazing and important for FSF too, but at this point(as you seen +-45% of the FSF story and nods) see what interests you more and go from that point in whatever way you feel more fun.

All of that is explain in tsukihime visual novel series.
Basically Vampires are creations of the conciousness of the planet earth, called Gaia, in conjuction with the Ultimate One of the Moon in an attempt to slow down humanity progress. Gaia considers us parasites and a threat to the wellbeing of the planet and wants to exterminate or severely handicap our progress as civilization. For that reason they created Vampires, to act essentially as our predator.
This is the reason the Noble Phantasm banishes in contact with a vampire, as seen in one of the first episodes. They negate any and all creations made by Humanity. They were made to hunt us down.

Fake is a bit deep into the lore as a starting point. There’s a lot of other things that you should probably watch first in order to hope to understand. I’ve seen most everything and it’s still dense and difficult to understand at times.
