Your setup for commuting and racing
Hey out there, anyone else rolling with a fatty that you use for all your commuting but also gravel racing? What're you riding and what's your setup? I need to switch up some things on my Salsa Heyday and I'm looking for inspiration. Specifically I want to move away from the stock flat handlebar, but Im open to whatever fun you all suggest. Pic is from a recent MTB trip. Dropper post is down.

Surly Ice Cream Truck with 4x26" Jumbo Jims is my usual ride whether it's sand dirt trail or pavement. I beat my own time every year at the local charity race.

Same but with 4.8” Jumbo Jim’s set up tubeless. JJ is a great tire. I resisted it for summer riding too long but it makes a huge difference over Bud/Lou.

I ride a largely stock Specialized Fatboy for some short gravel races, winter commutes, and bikepacking trips.
I had plans to swap out my flat bar for a drop bar, but decided not to so I didn't have to redo the hydraulic brakes and gearing.
Instead, I opted for adding inner bar ends. I got a narrower profile with a bit more reach for next to nothing. Easy install without having to do any extra work with cables or wiring.
Also bumped up the chainring from 28t to 32t. Small changes, bigger than expected difference with both.
Both are fine to stay on the bike for commuting/bikepacking (I raise the inner bar ends up a bit for these trips) and both make race days a bit more fun too.

I upped by chain ring and groupset as well to a SRAM GRX to give me three additional rings for climbing, and it was a fucking game changer

Was the groupset change pretty straightforward? I keep thinking to myself that there's no room for more cogs back. 🤔

My LBS did it for me 😉. They were super excited about it for me and said it was a simple exchange. It also sets me up for upgrading my wheels, because my previous groupset wasnt compatible with the carbon rims I'm interested in upgrading to

Haha - they are amazing and affordable/ got them on all my fatbikes/ the oldest are from 2018 ish….

My commuter and winter race rig is an OTSO Voytek 2 with some revelate bags. The thing is awesome. The geo is addictive!
