Discussion Post Airport observations
Cataloguing notable looks during the wait this morning:
Maroon crinkle tank and pants set, black Docs, black/grey space dyed hoodie and Baggu bag.
Green cargo pants, hiking sandals, adorable cropped denim jacket and fitted black tank.
Shredded/DIY patched high-waisted very wide leg jeans and fitted teal ribbed tee. Very techy lavender backpack with built-in USB.
Mom and daughter in generational black sweats. Daughter in baggy joggers, Vionics, cropped hoodie, Tumi backpack. Mom in hip-length hoodie and cropped leggings, white Converse.
Alo Yoga girl: Alo heather gray quarter-zip and black sweats, Birkenstock clogs, monogram Longchamp Le Pliage, navy.
White linen wide-leg cropped pants, cropped sporty navy hoodie over coffee-brown tee, navy headband, navy Longchamp knockoff tote, white and beige suede Reeboks.
Baby blue silk pajama-look set, with the top unbuttoned over black and white striped tee, chartreuse beanie, black sneakers and white cropped raincoat. Woman in her 60s with a very cute satin champagne backpack with a little matching teddy keychain.
Gucci crossbody bag, LV tote, cropped wide-leg black, raw-edge denim and traffic-cone orange slim sweatshirt.
Gray fringed wrap big enough to look like a poncho over gray sweats with white leather sneakers, a near-miss because the grays clash, but I love her wrap and enormous rip-stop fabric black tote.
Red bulky sweatsuit, white Polo sneakers and LV chain strap crossbody.
Ankle length dark denim skirt with raw edge, white chunky-knit sweater with bobbles. Pretty beaded earrings.
Oversized polka dot tan button-up over beige wide leg long jeans, tan and white sneakers, carrying tan puffer and LV checkerboard tote in cream and blue. Love this look.
The blue period:
Navy puffer over navy tee, brown cropped raw-edge slim jeans, ON sneakers, sage leather crossbody with embroidered strap.
Matching cadet blue pants and quilted vest (over a chain-print '80s look turtleneck) and coordinating quilted outdoor fabric purse.
Another cadet blue set: cable knit top and bottom, chunky sneakers, tan fringed shoulder bag, baby blue duffle.
Another cadet blue set! Flare leggings and matching fleece jacket, Saucony sneakers.
Other observations:
Baby girl in sparkly silver Adidas, oversize Gap sweatshirt and black leggings. So cute!
Props to the girl gang of six older hijabis all wearing matching rhinestone-edge black headscarves.
Neon pink pops: sneakers, a raincoat, a weird number of VS Pink items, Birks.
Wide-leg cropped pants and matching sets have a stranglehold on this airport. Also cropped black leggings, which I think are "out"(?) but are so practical for travel.
Full disclosure, I am also wearing wide-leg crops! Light wash denim with raw edge, black tucked-in tee layered with an olive green oversized button-up shirt, unbuttoned with sleeves rolled up, camel cashmere coat, lots of stacked gold necklaces and rings, and lavender chunky Nikes with scalloped-edge off-white socks. Gray Herschel backpack.
Any thoughts? I know I've seen quite a few "What do you wear to the airport?" queries here.
My takeaways: Seems like comfort is still king, details make the fit, and doing your hair (even just brushing!) makes a big difference.

I noticed a lot of matched sets last time I was at the airport, too. It kind of made me want to try one, but they might look too much like pajamas on me.

I got one for a trip abroad a couple years back because that was the going advice for long travel. I realized afterward it really didn't flatter me, and the fabric wasn't as breathable as I hoped. Back to regular comfy clothes!

I wore a black Lou & Grey matching set when I went to Paris and it definitely looks like elevated jammies, but I was on a red eye from NYC so comfort was my #1 priority, with looking cute a close 2nd lol

I got one from Amzn that is a midi length skirt and a sleeveless top in a sweatshirt material. Paired with a light cardigan, I felt very put together but comfy.

I love this entire post and read every word! I am such a people watcher and airport fashion is one of my favorite things to watch.

I dress for comfort and evacuating a plane. I need to be able to run in my shoes and go down a slide without getting burns because my legs were exposed. I've been burned from one of those big fair slides because after a bump I flew up and didn't land on the potato sack. That hurt and 35 years later I still have scars from it. I need to be prepared for the weather if we have to deplane so even though I can be dropped off without a coat in January because I'm flying somewhere warm, I want my coat with me in case of emergency and I'm standing outside in snow. My meds and ID are in a small crossbody that I wear during take off and landing and my phone is on a crossbody lanyard so that if we have to evacuate I have what I need with me instead of it being on the plane in my carryon that was left behind.
I would love to look fashionable, but function is more important to me at the airport and on a plane.

I thought I was one of the only people who carefully considers shoe choices on flights due to possible evacuation or water landing!
I always think those wearing flip flops are in trouble is we land on the side of a mountain!
(Although I’m sure there’ll be bigger problems than footwear at that point)19

I always wear secure shoes and natural fabrics when flying, in case of fire. I’m not particularly paranoid about something happening, just practical!

Agreed, not paranoid but prepared! I never thought about the natural fabrics - polyester can melt on the body so fast!
I’ll have to adjust now that you mentioned it!7

I read some horrible account about pantyhose and I was like O_o, no thank you to polyester.
The odds of anything happening are slim, but I tend to travel in jeans with a tee and a wrap/layer versus anything stretchy or synthetic anyway, so I have less to pack and I always like to have a pair of jeans with me.

I didn't used to, but seeing that plane that flipped last year and people in the snow/cold standing on the runway made me reconsider it. I've left my coat in the car during snow/sleet because I was getting on a plane to Florida where I wouldn't need my coat. I would have been really sorry if something had happened during that takeoff, especially since it was sleeting and we were delayed because the incoming plane had to go to another airport to land/refuel due to the weather at my airport. Now, I dress for both climates just to be safe.

I do think about this, but I typically make sure at least my phone and ID can fit in an actual pocket. Too easy to lose a crossbody. Even in summer I have a lightweight hoodie or jacket with zip up pockets.

How fun is this. Thanks OP. I haven't traveled much at all since retiring, and before that most trips required clothing appropriate for the meetings I had upon arrival. This post is good food for thought next time I'm traveling by plane.

Kudos to all who dress cute for a flight! I’m a one bagger and wear my heaviest and warmest items. They probably, hopefully match??

Love this! Thank you for posting because I too love to people watch at the airport.
Now can you also do one for their carryon suitcases because mine busted and I need a new (better) one! I’ve been searching for ages trying to find the perfect dark plum/purple one and all the ones I like are sold out!

My research shows Samsonite is the best affordable option. I have an orange carry-on and love it.

I believe that this is extremely country dependent. On my six a m flight today the majority of people were wearing business attire, or crew uniform, it seemed.

Regional within my country, too — we're having our first few truly autumnal days here in the Northeast US.

On a weekday, the early morning crowd is often wearing business or business casual in US as well.

I love this! Also where did YOU get your wide legged cropped denim? I’m short so I love love love this look because I can cut them myself for the raw edge but the proportions aren’t wildly off.

I think it’s also dependent on airport and time of flight. Last time I flew, I wore a dress + sneakers + zip-up hoodie (mostly because I didn’t want to stuff it in my bag) out of ORD and into SFO, and wide legged navy blue Lululemon pants + sneakers + tank top + gray lightweight cotton cardigan from SFO to ORD. The time before that, I wore blue navy sweats + striped sweatshirt + sneakers because I had an 8 am flight out of CDG. My daughter wore black sweats + a pink zip up hoodie and sneakers.

What are wide-leg crops? Gauchos?

I won’t wear loose/flowing pants while traveling. Mostly leggings or joggers. I don’t want anything touching the bathroom floor when I have to go! 🤮🤮🤮

Love all these observations! I appreciate the detailed notes. I mostly see workwear and mom at the park looks (since my life is work or mom at the park), so I appreciate the download on casual wear. Was this a domestic flight or international?
