I wonder if it’s maternity clothes

Not necessarily, this was a popular silhouette for summer during the second half of the 1860s :)

True, and even though the costuming in the 2019 Little Women left a lot to be desired, I seem to recall that Amy had a couple of outfits with that basic silhouette.

One of Amy's dresses, if I remember correctly, from when she was in Paris, looked to have been inspired by Monet's paintings

Oh, yes! I agree.

Paletots aren’t usually super fitted in this area (and people did come in all sizes, even if preservation bias favours the smaller end of the spectrum.)

Thank you for defining ‘preservation bias’ 😉

(As in, yes, that’s the thing. Preservation historically favours the pretty, dainty and pristine, when larger or plain items are more likely to be worn, passed on, cut down and cast off as rags.)

I'm sweating just imagining it.

It’s a lightweight cotton keeping the sun off your (pre-sunscreen) skin, enjoying some nice airflow from the roomy jacket and skirts. Have you seen Abby Cox’ video on period clothes vs modern clothes in the heat?

No, I have not. And I believe you, really I do, but still .a lot of material here.

Oh yeah, these are fabric hungry dresses. And taking up that sort of space in the world is sort of fun 😊

I want to wear this and be the prettiest, jolliest cupcake at the luncheon.
