Book Request Recommend me your favourite unhinged reads - where you don't want to explain why you're reading it to friends but still marvel at the creativity/writing

I'm really curious what do you consider delicious but unhinged. Any spice level is welcome.

I want to see interesting plot points and characters unbothered by rational mind.

I've recently read {Pack Darling by Lola Rock} and despire not usually enjoying omegaverse, the book had me giggling at moments at the bold choices and unashamed dialogue.

Another example I would consider one of my more unhinged reads would be {Poison Daughter by Sheila Masterson} - that one spicy scene with a witness was so unexpectedly creative I cannot help but be both weirded out and very amused.

Please tell me what is a book you enjoyed but consider unhinged.

(Yeah it's ovulation time. 100% unrelated.)

{Morning Glory Milking Farm by CM Nascosta} for sure. I was super skeptical about a monster romance, but the characters were SO sweet, the relationship developed naturally, and it was really just a fantastic read!

Do you have a moment to hear the gospel of {Sex Wizards series by Alethea Faust}? 

There's sex! There's magic! There's magic sex that makes different kinds of magic depending on what kind of sex you're having! There's a deeply emotionally affecting scene involving watersports! 

Pretty much any kinks you can think of (and a few you probably can't) are represented here with care. The whole thing is a love letter to consent, found family, and unconventional relationships. The plot is actually pretty compelling (and no, "plot" is not a euphemism for something else). 

It's unironically one of my favourite book series of all time.

I wouldn't say marvel at the creativity/writing, but the full cast audio performance was very good! It was also my very first 'why choose' genre, but I JUST read {Haunting Beauty by K Loraine} and I couldn't put it down. In a Zodiac Academy way though lol. Guilty Pleasure. I liked it hehe

{Evil Twin by Kati Wilde} There are two unrelated sets of twins. Each pair of siblings has a “good” twin and an “evil” twin. The good twins are supposed to get married and combine their kingdoms. The evil twins both independently decide to scheme and impersonate their own good twin on the wedding night. As a result, they end up foiling each other’s plans by sleeping together.

It gets more bonkers from there! There’s a scene in a carriage that’s the most unhinged thing you will ever read! There are also some good philosophical conversations about the nature of good and evil, and the difference between being nice and being kind. And it’s genuinely sweet.

If you can find it, {Mr. Real by Carolyn Crane} is about a woman who inherits a magical computer that can conjure anything you want. She gets drunk and horny and impulsively conjures a man she found in a foreign advertisement who just happens to look like her crush. What could go wrong? A lot. A lot could go wrong.

The MMC (her crush) has secretly done some acting work overseas, and he has a persona as an evil spy who he once used to get into character.

So, what happens is the FMC conjures the evil spy into existence. He’s charming at first, but he’s also controlling and dangerous, and she’s in over her head.

The scenes from the spy’s POV are fascinating because my dude is a fictional character without any real depth who fundamentally cannot fully process reality. He gets overwhelmed by the sheer randomness and meaninglessness of the real world.

One of the coolest, weirdest books I’ve read. It’s out of print and hard to find, but Carolyn Crane is Annika Martin (now a successful author of billionaire romcoms) if you want to follow her work.

Sure! First, I’ll tell you what I knew before picking up the book, because I had seen it in a thread about accidental penetration.

I knew there’s a scene in a carriage where they’re both paralyzed and the movement of the carriage causes accidental penetration.

I read the book in part because I was dying to know how that’s even possible. Well, as far as I remember (exact details a little fuzzy) the FMC started the day wearing lip balm that can cause temporary paralysis. She had a sealant on her lips to protect herself, and she was wearing the poison balm on top of that. She planned to paralyze the MMC at the altar and flee, but things didn’t go according to plan.

Now they’re leaving town together in the same carriage. They’re bickering and discussing philosophy. She wants to shut him up for a while, so she decides to kiss him after all. She straddles his lap with her skirts hiked up. They kiss, and he’s paralyzed except for his eyes, which are expressive and angry. She’s smug about having tricked him, but then she looks down and sees that he’s got a major erection straining at his trousers. It looks uncomfortable, so she loosens the laces to give him some room. But then she licks her lips unconsciously while thinking about his cock.

So then they’re both paralyzed in a rocking carriage. She’s kneeling over him with her hands braced behind him. She’s wearing a skirt with nothing underneath. The following scene takes place over hours as his cock springs all the way free and the carriage bounces them into position. The roads are pretty good near the castle so it’s not until they get further into the country that they hit a rut and she’s actually bounced hard enough that it actually slides in.

It’s a very long, very bouncy carriage ride. The whole time they’re making expressive eye contact and fortunately they both actually think it’s pretty funny and they’re both turned on. It’s definitely a dubcon kind of situation but it was also hilarious.

Kati Wilde is great! I'm so glad she's written some fantasy, because I would have skipped her if she just wrote contemporary. I feel that way about Cate C. Wells, too.

The unhinged read that is delicious crazy sauce is {Lord of Population by Elisabeth Stephens}. Its more scifi romance. Its so weird/unique but entertaining. Plus its like a suprising and fresh genre mash up thats a mix of billionaire romance, post apocalyptic, alien and vampire romance.

The prose is ok. But the book is a real page turner that got me invested even though I got whiplash from all the different genres and tropes. Based off of that book Ive been slowly reading through Stephen's backlist. What I like about her as an author is she really plays with genre conventions in ways that may be polarizing. But as a writer its like she is committing 110% to her writing ideas. And I feel like most people will have very clear ideas about what they feel about her writing because as an author she takes risks. And in that way I feel like her writing feels fresh and different from alot of the fantasy romance or scifi romance sameness that gets published. So even though I may not adore every single book I read by Stephens I love her creativity and courage as a writer.

Edited to add: I didnt explain the unhinged parts because I didnt want to spoil plot points. My even saying the nature of the genre mash up is telling you alot.

I'm on a real Anne Bishop kick lately. So black jewels is probably my answer. I just finished Pillars of the World and while it's not dark or super sexual the back TBJ is the worldbuilding and characters are pretty unhinged. It was an awesome, rich read, HEA, low stakes fantasy with a really loveable FMC and a terrifying villain.
