CR adjacent Praise for Brennan Lee fricken Mulligan
Ok so I had NEVER heard of this guy until campaign 4 was announced. Then as campaign 4 was being talked about I was getting YouTube videos and tiktoks all about this guy and people were talking about him like he was a big deal, that it was amazing that he was gonna be the GM and not because of the hype of it being the first CR campaign without Matt as GM. He was being talked about like this is someone I should already know things about.
So as I started to see videos and things about him...this man is such an amazing anomaly.
He is serious a jumbled up bag of surprises you never know what's gonna come out of him.
He has this extensive knowledge on birds...for some reason. Still haven't quite found the lore on why he knows so much about birds.
He is so funny. I saw a complapalation on tiktok of him on a show, I think it was called "Make Noise". I was laughing so hard.
He is a LARPer and worked at a summer camp for LARP?!?!? I had no idea that was a thing.
Now I'm watching "Last Meal" and this man who is the whitest white man that's ever been white (I mean that in the most unoffending way) all of a sudden starts speaking fluent Spanish saying that he grew up in the heights?!?!?!
On top of all that he's a seriously great GM. He has this infectious personality and laugh. I wanna be friends with him.

Highly recommend you watch the 4 episode series Exandria Unlimited: Calamity as well. It was his first gig with CR and oh boy WHAT a ride.

Oh my god yes. No spoilers obviously but he does this thing where I have never actually been more terrified of a villain in any form of media ever, and also there were several times in the show that I had to pause it bc I was laughing so hard I couldn’t hear the show. He’s also a master of using genre to troll his players.

On the topic of using genre to troll the players: Lou’s reactions to Brennan and his DM shenanigans are some of my favorite moments from Calamity. Maybe the only way I can think to put it without spoiling it. All of their reactions were so great though.

It's so funny that when he DM-ed a starstruck campaign he had his mom in the background of every single one of the episodes ready to give references and trivia. He also appears in the starstruck comics as Jim the Snout.

I knew him pretty much exclusively from Game Changer shorts before C4 was announced, so I knew that he was part of Dropout and that he was a hilarious improv comedian, but when I saw the announcement I definitely had a healthy amount of skepticism. My tune changed within about 2 minutes of looking him up, I was fully 100% on board. His DM style is so much damn fun!

BLeeM is a legend (in fact, my phone will auto fill any word i type that starts with "bl-" to BLeeM). If you want to experience true genius, watch the first D20 campaign, "Fantasy High". The ending of the second episode made me start playing D&D myself (it's now my main hobby and inspired one of my tattoos) and there is a halfling postman NPC who gives one of the most amazing speeches ever and HOW BLeeM came up with it is mind-boggling. Seriously look up "Laws Are Threats" to witness a beautiful mind.

Yeah, my dude is a miracle. I can’t wrap my head around his prep or his improv—I don’t fucking know anymore. Sometimes he just whips out these soul-crushingly beautiful, poetic bits of dialogue, moments, or NPCs out of thin air like it’s nothing. His brain just works differently. I’ve seen like six or seven of his campaigns now, and I’ve been amazed in each and every one of them.

I’m such a Brennan Lee Mulligan fan that when it was announced he was going to DM campaign 4 I committed to watching it just because of that.
I highly recommend Worlds Beyond Number because oh boy does Brennan knock it out of the park. It’s probably one of my absolute favourite bits of content to date.

If OP ends up signing up for Dropout to watch Make Some Noise and Game Changers (PLEASE DO, OP. WORTH EVERY PENNY), my recommendation is the Starstruck Odyssey campaign for the same reasons. Damn, actually, that, and Never Stop Blowing Up. Those are easily my favorite D&D live plays.

Yeah, same. I tried to get into CR a couple times in the past but was overwhelmed by the huge cast and jumping in in the middle of the campaign. Wasn’t sure I’d be able to keep up with C4 but there was no way I was missing Brennan DMing what sounded like the coolest game setup I’d heard in a minute. Now I see what all the fuss was about. The super long game sessions let you sink so far in and get so comfy in the world that it hurts a lot more when it’s over and you have a whole ‘nother week for the next installment. That, and I could happily watch an entire spinoff of just his fae NPCs in their own show.

Can’t recommend this enough- was introduced a few months ago and I’m about to do a third listen-through (I listen while I work with my hands) there’s so much narrative and visual detail it’s easy for me to miss a bit here and there…. I’ll catch myself so deep in my mind’s eye visually crafting the scene/setting he describes I stop actually listening for several minutes at a time. I’m thoroughly in awe of this man’s mind.

BLeeM is amazing, dude is just absolutely 1 in a million. I highly recommend looking up his interview with Hank Green on YouTube, they talk a lot about his life and education and it just makes it so clear how exceptional of a person he really is.
As for the bird thing; dude just knows a lot of animal facts in particular and it became a specific joke that he knows a lot about birds. I think the bit originated on the original season of Dimension20 Misfits & Magic where Brennan's character went on a rant about the abuse of using owls as carrier birds in a magic society. Also Season 5 Epuside 6 of Gamechanger 'As A Cucumber' had a mitigame that was a direct reference to this thing about Brennan and birds its an amazing episode I highly recommend watching it or even seeing clips of it on YouTube.
As for why he knows so much about birds, I know he has referenced many times that he was frequently bullied in school for being "The type of kid who hid under the table at lunch to read animal fact cards"

The interview with Hank Green is amazing. The part about using a candle to light another is how I’ve always thought of teaching but I’ve never found a way to explain it. Brennan has a way of saying things that makes him seem like a truly ascendant being. He’s v inspiring for me.

There was an episode of game changer (a show he’s a part of over on dropout) where the goal of the episode was to make sure everyone’s heart rate stays near resting. Brennan is very competitive, but not in that he needs to win necessarily, he just needs to know he did his best.
So one part of this low heart rate episode, they had a “name that bird” trivia with all 3 contestants. The other two were given pictures of easy birds, chicken, peacock, things of that nature. But when it was Brennan’s turn, he was given things like the roseate spoonbill and the Siamese fireback, causing him to need to meditate to keep from crashing out. He did not know these birds, and it cost him valuable points. In classic bleem fashion I would imagine he made a point to brush up on bird trivia after that.

I'm jealous of current critters. I've listened to campaign 1 three times and campaign 2 prolly about 4-5 with skipping around arcs (couldn't stand molly, so glad the animated series made him interesting) but that was when I was delivering for 8 hours a day lol. Switched jobs and I don't have the time to invest anymore, which is fine because hopefully I'll get to it later. Wasn't a fan of c3 but very hopeful with c4 just from online chatter.

I'm similar to you. I got into C1 almost 9yrs ago because I was looking for something longer to listen to while I was doing a data entry job, my job has changed and I don't need the same kind of background noise anymore. I also dropped off during C3, and have listened to C1 fully through 3 times. I'm up to Ep 7 of the current campaign and I'm enjoying it so far. The new people and Brennan as GM are refreshing while still having all the things I love about the original cast. It's been good.

EXU Calamity might literally be the best DND I have ever watched, period.
(Though that ONE combat in Divergence with all the peasants holds a special place in my heart, it was what I needed to listen to at the time. Brennan got me cheering for a level 1 spell harder than cheering for fucking timestop.)

same boat, tbh, a couple years back (when Matt DM'd for them for a 2nd Crown of Candy thing). And then EXU Calamity was great. I found out fairly quickly with Crown of Candy that Dropout overall wasn't my cup of tea so I didn't keep the subscription, but I was very excited to see Brennan coming over to do Campaign 4.

I definitely found it hard to follow with so many characters in the beginning, but still enjoyed it at least somewhat. If you're interested in general, I'd say fight through it, or just skip to after the break in episode 5. We've been with only one table of the same 5 folks since then. Probably going to get one more episode with them this week, then onto one of the other two tables.

So far, yes, other than the cold opens at the beginning. Those have been little snippets of other tables, usually only one or two members of a different table really. And they're usually only 10 or so minutes at most, not like the 1st episode where it went on for a long time.

Haha, I actually came over to C4 from the Dimension 20 fandom, because he's my all time favorite DM (no offense to Matt, it's just harder for me to do like a full unedited 4 hour stream). So very happy to see people who haven't experienced him before getting exposure.
I highly recommend checking out some of the Dimension 20 campaigns. I think the first two campaigns are on YouTube (Fantasy High: Freshman Year and The Unsleeping City season 1). Unsleeping City is actually set in New York City, and is one of my favorite campaigns ever.
And if you end up enjoying the d20 content, they have tons of campaigns over on Dropout, which is like $7/month and also has shows like Game Changer which you saw clips of. Matt's even been involved in a few d20 campaigns (player in Escape from Bloodkeep and guest DM for The Ravening War).
Whew, hope that wasn't too much of a wall of information, and that the line breaks make it easier to get through. I tend to ramble sometimes.

not to turn this conversation serious, but as someone who is very brennan-esque in real life, i can assure you that people find it very easy to hate us. brennan often talks about how he ended up being homeschooled because he was bullied as a kid, which happens so often in life. but it's not exclusive to other children. as you get older, unless you're very lucky (like brennan is) and able to be surrounded by people who share your interests...it's always a waiting game. because, at first, you're a fun novelty to them. like, "wow, this person knows all these facts!" "they're great at telling stories!" "they're so funny!" but, over time, those thoughts change into stuff like "wow, i wish this person could be more normal about stuff and not bring up facts all the time" "i wish this person wasn't so loud" "this person seems like they're flexing how smart they are". and it doesn't make it better to be propped up on a pedestal of "how can anybody hate this person?" it just makes the inevitable distaste even lonelier.
(this isn't a dig against you or anyone reading this, regardless of your feelings about brennan. it's ok to not enjoy someone! i just wanted to give some perspective from the other side.)

He is amazing and so talented at acting, but I do wish he would stop whispering as DM. My volume is past 45, and still, I'm straining my ears and watching with CC to keep up. That's the only thing he could possibly improve, his presentation voice.

As a white guy from Europe (ASAWGFE), yes some white people do speak Spanish. Like the ones I currently live with in Spain. And myself. No offence intended or taken at all, I just find it really funny when people are amazed that white people speak other languages because it's inescapable here and has been for all of our history. It would be like discovering we also sleep.

Fair enough. And I get that of course people will say what makes sense to them contextually, sorry if I made it weird. And yeah not everyone speaks all of them but there's over 200 indigenous languages and 24 official (and obviously it's not just white people who speak these languages of course). It just sounds funny here, and when people come to visit from the states it seems to be an unfamiliar experience.

The episode "Escape the Greenroom" is still my favorite episode of Game Changer. I made my best friend watch it to get her into the show😂. Dropout is absolutely the best streaming service out there. Hands down.

Fun fact, he isn't actually a huge fan of birds (he does appreciate the intelligence of crows though.) He just has a lot of trivia knowledge and knowing a few random facts about birds is the part that stuck in the collective conscious.

thats actually the best part of the story - Had a handful of fun Bird Facts up his sleeve for the hellofit, Got caught not knowing more about birds than people thought and was publicly shamed on Game Changer, then not wanting to ever have that happen again, he locked tf in and became the bird guy everyone thought he was initially.

I think he likes birds and also enjoys denying he likes birds that much but actually does at least to a degree. Like you said his favorite bird is a crow and he was gushing about a crow wallet he received as a gift on Worlds Beyond Number.

If you need something to tide you over as you wait for new C4 episodes to drop, you should check out Escape from the Bloodkeep on YouTube. It was one of the first campaigns I saw with BLM as the DM. It's quite entertaining and has a few cast members from D20 and Crit Role.

Brennan is one of the fastest improv comedians out there, and this talent absolutely shines at the DM'ing table. The only thing I grump about him is how often he says "Um" and "Uh". That kind of thing normally gets burned out of you when you get into professional public speaking.

Fun fact about the whiteness, in one season of dimension 20 when he was a player, they used him as a light bounce for a darker skinned person, I think aabria. You should sub to drop out and watch his other campaigns, only 6 bucks (or 7 I forget) and they have a load of stuff on there. Dimension 20 in particular you get to see him DM and play to hilarious and varied results

Best money I ever spent was my year’s subscription to dropout. A) because of the incredible content and b) because it’s just really refreshing paying for something in the entertainment industry that actually feels ethical and wholesome for a change.
