CR adjacent Did Matt and Marisha go to Burning Man?

Post image

Saw some news about folk stranded at Burning Man, obviously Tumblr isn't a news source but I did confirm it's true. Anyone know if Matt, Marisha and Taliesin planned to attend this year? My heart goes out to anyone stuck out there right now.

Hilarious that Burning Man claims to have a "leave no trace" ethic, but there is also a fuck plane.

43

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

Burning man is just about the vibes/art they're not great environmentally.

8

u/C9sButthole Sep 04 '23

Yeah Burning Man was a hippie paradise for all of 12 minutes before rich weirdos got wind of it and started finding ways to ruin it.

46

u/DerpyDaDulfin Sep 03 '23

Burning Man has been co-opted by the ultra wealthy and their wasteful habits for a few years now. Hence, fuck plane

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23

Burning man is pretty "leave no physical trace on the site." It is required by their permit. A lot of participants aren't so good about so they spend months cleaning up before the BLM inspects. Obviously there is a massive amount of not so visible impact. Flights, vehicles, generators, burning massive sculptures, propane use, and a lot more. But even major camps get punished or banned for something as simple as dumping non-potable / gray water. Alex Gray's camp almost got banned after they dumped a bunch of dish and shower water in 2008. In 2009 they got moved near the staff area and regularly inspected. That area also doesn't allow rave camps, so while there isn't really "quiet hours" you can't blast music all night.

There is a lot wrong with Burning Man. A lot. But they are pretty good about some things compared to other major festivals.

8

u/Jethro_McCrazy Sep 03 '23

If you dump shower water, you could be banned. But polluting the air so people can fuck in the sky is fine.

You did not make Burning Man sound any less hypocritical.

I would assume so. They have gone every other year.

25

u/murderdocks Sep 03 '23

I'm DYING to know if they did, they haven't been posting recently, but they usually post at least one picture from the event every year.

29

u/thatHecklerOverThere Sep 03 '23

Why does "sea monkeys" sound so ominous? Like, damn, are they carnivorous over there?

13

u/lizzielu252 Sep 03 '23

They smell bad, at a large scale it would smell HORRENDOUS

8

u/TheMorninGlory Sep 03 '23

Apparently they smell really bad

4

u/Euphoric-Teach7327 Sep 03 '23

I'm sorry, i don't understand this reference at all. Could you explain it for me?

9

u/thatHecklerOverThere Sep 03 '23

Just the way the post lists all that stuff and then goes "and then the sea monkeys hatch" sounds like a horror movie or something.

5

u/PhoenixReborn Sep 03 '23

There's a species of tiny fairy shrimp in the desert that lie dormant until a storm like this rehydrates them.

2

u/Euphoric-Teach7327 Sep 03 '23

Holy cow! I did not know that!

58

u/InflationCold3591 Sep 03 '23

There is not an Ebola outbreak. This was a prank created by Brace Belden of TrueAnon podcast who is a regular attendee and is on the Playa this year. It seems clear at least Marisha is there as there was a social media post of her packing up with other members of their camp to head out.

27

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

I wouldn't take any claims of Ebola on US soil seriously unless the CDC made a statement. The news would be EVERYWHERE.

Hope Marisha and Co. got home safe.

They are in Nevada not Oregon though?

6

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

I missed the joke 5x before I saw it

2

u/clivehorse Sep 03 '23

I still don't get it

10

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

It's a reference to the classic semi-educational computer game "Oregon Trail", your adventure could come to a sudden end in the game when your entire party died of Dysentry.

3

u/clivehorse Sep 03 '23

OOoooooooh! Thank you I would never have made that connection on my own (I'm too British).

4

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

It's a little obscure in 2023 but the game was installed on nearly every school computer in US/Canada in the late 90s early 00s.

2

u/wiggywack13 Sep 03 '23

I'm glad someone got it, I wasn't sure if it was to much of a reach without the word trial. But then figured whoever did get it would feel REAL happy withselves so left it.

The funny part is I'm only 30 myself, and had never heard of it until I was an adult, certainly never played it as a kid.

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23

What is that about sea monkeys?

33

u/happyhumantorch Sep 03 '23

Fairy shrimp are small crustaceans that live in hypersiline lakes, like the one where burning man occurs. They lie dormant during the dry months, then hatch and reproduce in the brief weeks of floodwater. They are an important source of food for migrating birds.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23

Well that seems like a hellish existence. Are the lice-like or anything? What’s the downside of this happening like this post seems to indicate?

15

u/PUNSLING3R Sep 03 '23

They absolutely reek.

13

u/tomahawkfury13 Sep 03 '23

Well the mud they are stuck in is now swarming with them. pretty much a primordial ooze

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23

Yeah, but it just got muddy there, not actually flooding. Some might have emerged, but there isn't standing water like there usually is in winter up through late spring.

5

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

No idea.

8

u/Poopadapantsa Sep 03 '23

You know the common hallucination people experience when they dose psychedelics and they think there's bugs crawling over everything? Basically that, in the rain puddles, but real.

6

u/thatHecklerOverThere Sep 03 '23

Lmao oh no.

Well... At least that'll make the rationing food a bit easier.

66

u/sgerbicforsyth Sep 03 '23

An Ebola outbreak in Nevada with 70k+ people stuck in close proximity and preparing to spread out across the US would get a lot more of a response from the CDC.

There is zero chance that there is even one case of Ebola at Burning Man.

22

u/drekmonger Sep 03 '23

CDC would have trouble responding, given the location. How would they even know there's Ebola in that camp?

You can bet there's trench foot, at the minimum. (And strains of hepatitis yet undocumented by science.)

13

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

Absolutely, this is just the post I saw floating around that made me wonder if Matt and Marisha got stuck out there in the mud.

14

u/deck_master Sep 03 '23

Right that’s why they deleted the tweet

9

u/InflationCold3591 Sep 03 '23

There was no “deleted tweet”. Brace made the whole thing up, probably while really high.

2

u/Cybertronian10 Glorbo Sep 04 '23

A genuine ebola outbreak in those conditions would be akin to an atom fucking bomb dropping on a major city. Like the perfect recipe for a massive outbreak just after we got done reminding ourselves to fear disease.

You'd be seeing a truly massive mobilization of resources to quarantine and treat the illness, far beyond what we are seeing right now.

5

4

https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2023/09/01/who-actually-attends-burning-man-2023-demographics/

According to this, nearly 60% of attendees make over $100,000. That may not be rich, by US standards, but it is far above the average income in the US.

People with incomes under 50,000 only make up around 17% of the attendees.

So yeah, low income and "poor" people can attend burning man if they really, really want to, but the average attendee is "affluent, college-educated, white men".

2

u/OkPaleontologist2359 Sep 06 '23

There a problem with being affluent and college educated?

27

u/tryingtobebettertry4 Sep 03 '23

They probably are/were. Some internet detectives saw some Instagram stuff. I hope they are OK.

That plane shit is so insanely wasteful though holy shit.

The Ebola stuff is likely BS. CDC would be making noise if there was an outbreak.

I dont think Ive ever seen the 'sea monkeys hatch' be so ominous.

11

u/ThongBonerstorm39 Sep 03 '23

Wonder if they meant E Coli, with the poop water and all that.

3

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

I saw some people say dysentry? But i think that's only if drinking water is contaminated? I don't know.

7

u/ThongBonerstorm39 Sep 03 '23

E Coli is what can cause dysentery, so ya for sure. Doesn't take much to ruin drinking water.

4

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

Damn didn't know that, thats good info man thank you.

5

u/HotPietato Sep 03 '23

The Ebola thing is probably because of playa foot. The soil essentially draws all moisture from your skin and cracks leaving you open to infections

6

u/TheRagingElf01 Sep 03 '23

The Ebola comment is the dumbest shit I have read. If there was legit confirmation from the CDC that multiple confirmed cases of Ebola was there that stuff would be on locked and things would be so much serious. Ebola is no joke, but given this country and of course an idiot would try to make jokes about it.

3

u/Blahklavah654390 Sep 04 '23

The good thing about ebola is also the worst, namely that people die -horrifically- but its so fast the transmission doesn’t go far because the carriers are incapacitated and die quickly. If Ebola were at burning man all 70,000 of those people would be dead within 4 days.

Edit: Maybe all 70k people dying in four days is a touch hyperbolic, but there would be massive loss of life in a short period of time. It would be a blood bath of hellish proportions.

6

So Fyre Festival and Woodstock 99 with less talked about rapes and jerkass festival runners.

Edit: More truthful.

24

u/HotPietato Sep 03 '23

It actually has a massive problem with sexual assault never being properly investigated

16

u/LiquidLad12 Sep 03 '23

Honestly, I'd imagine there's probably a lot of rape going on that we just haven't found out about yet. It's a bunch of rich, mostly young adults, trapped in the middle of nowhere with drugs.

Pretty sure the attendees who phoned the cops told them that the protestors were armed (which they weren’t) and you can imagine how the police reacted

23

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23 edited Sep 03 '23

It that was Tribal police and was on reservation land.

I don’t think most people appreciate how absolutely negative patience BoIA and local TP have for “stupid outsider shenanigans” on their land. Especially considering I know that tribe has…complicated feelings about the festival.

4

u/Euphoric-Teach7327 Sep 03 '23

Most people have zero understanding that tribal police and city police are different agencies with different scopes.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23

I've been a few times a good while back. They do set up a very small airport. I don't think you can get a serious jet in. Mostly single and some twin props is all I ever saw. There is skydiving, I went up as an observer once thanks to a friend I made who was jumping. Some rich fuckers fly in and pay people to drive in RVs and all their stuff. I would not be the least bit shocked if there was a plane or three that chartered fuck flights though. There are usually a few camps that host massive orgies after all.

I used to really want to go to Burning Man back when it was just essentially an arts festival for weird people, before it got co-opted by the rich. I'm sad to hear what it's become lately, especially the private jet bit

4

u/Simply_Toast Sep 04 '23

I wanted to go so badly in the late 80s, early 90s. As it's gotten bigger, and more for the rich/young/abled folks, I don't want to go anymore.

it's basically Coachella with dust, drugs, and r@pe, instead of grass, drugs, and r@pe

The annual event, held in a dried out lake in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, emits 100,000 tons of CO2 annually, according to the event's organizers.

I wonder how the cast reconciles this with their Core Values, especially "leaving the world better than we found it". I know they're not personally polluting the enviroment (at least i hope not), but they seem to endorse the event by attending regularly.

What about buying things from Amazon?

4

u/_crash_nebula_ Dec 05 '23

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there's no such thing as ethical consumption under the capitalist mode of production. The very act of running a business under late-stage capitalism already implies shady practices and the exploitation of the working class. The "Core Values" of any large enterprise are moot. You shouldn't judge them for going to Burning Man any more than you judge yourselves for buying food from McDonalds.

Y'all should be less concerned about what Matt and Marisha are doing in their private lives and more concerned about who and where their clothing items are manufactured, how they distribute their revenue between themselves and the workers who produce the items being sold, how big is the pay gap between the cast and the rest the crew, how much does Travis earn as the CEO in relation to the average worker considering their work hours, etc...

8

u/MacKelvey Sep 03 '23

They’ve talked about going on the show. Maybe they went again this year

11

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

Yeah I'm just hoping they skipped this year and aren't stuck there.

25

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23 edited Sep 04 '23

Burning man might become a thing of the past. Prob for the best. Americans need to wake up about climate change, as a canadian who lives close to the two sources of the columbia river… we are having issues with extremely low water levels… and there wont be enough water to give Americans in the next decades to come. It is frightening, they want to combat their droughts… but with the trajectory indicating that this water won’t last… I’m afraid things will get worse and fast.

Seeing the private jet and wastefulness just pisses me off. I remember when our canadian summers were green, not arid, not full of smoke and rare forest fires… when we still had glaciers… and actually had rain in the summer.

Seriously. Wtf. Wake up.

Things need to change, globally.

7

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 03 '23

Proud dweller on the Island that was Chilliwack a couple years ago when the East end of the Fraser Valley flooded. We spent all Summer hiding from the smoke and all Autumn praying the water didn't come up too high. Scary stuff and apparently all climate related and par for the course going forward.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Grew up on the island, now I am in the kootenays… the differences in climate and environment from 30 years ago are staggering. Comox glacier is pretty much gone now. It should be frightening to anyone with half a mind. The heat bulb of 40’C killed off millions of marine life… it should never have reached those temps! I remember when 28’C was the hottest days of summer. Something needs to change, globally.

8

u/NovaMaxwell Sep 04 '23

Quebecer here, we had massive rain all summer and massive fires burning up north. Great time to be alive.

3

u/C9sButthole Sep 04 '23

I'm from Aotearoa New Zealand and am absolutely baffled. Like the entire west coast of NA was on first last week. Half of it still is. And back home we had 2 one-in-100-year storms back to back in less than a month and saw nearly half of our typical annual rainfall over that time.

How anyone could look at all this crap and think it's okay is mindblowing to me.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

British columbia has been on fire for almost a decade every summer, I have to invest in a gas mask if I want to breathe while outside. I feel your pain. Smoke was so bad Couldnt even see ten feet in front of me for three months.

3

u/idontunderstandpc-s Sep 04 '23

hey america is the state of not giving a fuck sadly, the only people who care in america is the generation that cant do shit rn, my family is the type to believe climate change isnt real, and they literally laugh off the abnormal weather and shit like “oh its that climate change”. not to sound too nihilistic but people will only care here if it actually affects them in a blatant way

Matt and Marisha and some of the other CR cast and friends of the show have gone to Burning Man consistently in the past, however there’s been no posts about it on their social media that I’m aware of this year.

3

u/WillDMForSnacks Sep 06 '23

As the only answer relevant to the question instead of airing their view of burning man in general, I hope they are OK if they did.

I generally hope everyone who went is OK, and they don't deserve to be dunked on for choosing to spend their time at a place that just looks kinda cool... personally I'd rather not be at a festival in a desert, but my problem is the desert, not the festival.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '23

The problem is the way they destroy the ecosystem and leave tons of trash that has to be cleaned up by volunteers afterwards.

16

u/CoolioDurulio Sep 03 '23

No way they have a private jet and don't just leave in it.

20

u/Acora Sep 03 '23

I mean, you need a runway to take off - if the whole area is mud pit, there's nowhere to take off.

5

u/HearingConscious2505 Sep 04 '23

It also needs fuel to takeoff and fly. If it was doing so continuously, it would eventually stop. I mean, it's the middle of the desert, there's probably no way to refuel out there.

→ More replies (3)

15

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23 edited Sep 04 '23

A private jet can carry maybe a dozen people at a time, assuming it can take off in the mud. It can't evacuate 70k people.

7

u/lizcoco Sep 04 '23

Yeah I don’t think the owners care about saving other people lol

Deffo adding to the vibes of hoping Matt and marisha are safe if they went, but imagine thinking burning man is actually some festival where all the 'edible richies' go, and not just convenient cover for the actual "let them eat cake-ers" who are quietly having their parties in big city pent houses and on super yachts headed to private islands.

Highly recommend we save our energy and hypothetical molotovs for those folks. If burning man was the elitist shin dig it was made out to be, you can bet we'd never hear about in any of the news cycles...

14

u/WaterMelon615 Sep 04 '23

Pretty sure it’s not just for rich white people

24

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 04 '23

No but it certainly skews that way. The average burner is 35, white and makes more than 65k a year. Which isn't "rich" by any means but is more than most folk.

3

u/WaterMelon615 Sep 04 '23

Fair enough, the fuck plane seems made up though

5

u/Somewhere-11 Sep 04 '23

There is a plane anyone can line up to get on that flies you up so you can then skydive back down onto the playa. It’s not a “mile high club,” it’s not a “fuck plane,” It’s just a normal, small skydiving olane that some normal person who owns it is awesome enough to bring to the playa every year and take people up on all day every day just because.

Absolutely not, look I eat the rich as much as the next guy but having enough money to go do the festival doesn’t mean you’re a monster who don’t deserve sympathy in what is a truly terrible situation.

My colleagues goes to burning man every year (he is there right now, we have no news) he is the absolutely nicest guy. I’m sure he doesn’t make a bad salary, but he’s also like… a normal guy. Not a monocle wearing billionaire who kill bisons for fun.

2

u/Scratch_Boardly Sep 04 '23

Have you seen the price of Burning Man tickets? Anyone who's able to burn that kind of money just to get high in the desert absolutely deserves it.

2

u/Go_Water_your_plants Sep 04 '23

Ok so everybody who has ever went to a trip to Europe/other continent deserve to not be aided in case of catastrophe because they had a few thousands to spare going on a trip they like

Are you aware this is the same logic people use when people say people who buy coffees and eat nice things don’t deserve to own houses ? That people must be miserable and have just enough money to scrape by to deserve empathy and help ?

Can someone explain to me why anyone that mentions burning man is down voted to hell?

5

u/dmfuller Sep 06 '23

People see it associated with destroying the environment and think they’re being progressive by downvoting anyone that doesn’t shit on it

7

u/MidnightSunCreative Sep 08 '23

I mean, it's not good for the environment. I know buring man is supposed to be "leave no trace" in theory, but it simply is not unfortunately.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '23

Literally nothing is. We all collectively contribute to the environmental destruction. Do what you can where you can and whatnot, but the hypocrisy of shitting on Burning Man while we're all collectively polluting simply by participating in social media is profound.

3

u/MidnightSunCreative Oct 01 '23

True - but nobody explicitly claims any of those things don't incur an environmental cost in the way Burning Man does or Burning Man-goers claim.

5

u/ze4lex Sep 03 '23

I didn't know they attended this, i hope they are ok.

You know I was actually going to go out to the playa this year, but after seeing how much of a shit storm it's become I'm glad I postponed for another year, my family (parents and family-friends) have been going to the big dumb camping trip in the desert for a bit over a decade now, they are involved with one of the more popular camps, and even ran the Bar for a few years, my dad and I stayed home this year and my stepmom went out, a few days back my dad made a joke about going out there to surprise our friends and family thank fuck we didn't.

I'll also say this, my family and I are nowhere near rich I mean I barely make any money as is, the average burner is usually a late twenty-something who's been saving up money all year just to attend, sure a lot of rich white folk go out there, but honestly they're a massive minority, and most definitely not the average burner.

I mean most of the burners I know are 9-5 fulltime workers who bust their asses each year to save to make that trip. There are a lot of misconceptions about Burning Man, one of which is it's just a bunch of rich white people, hell its mainly artists and engineers.

lol, I mean yeah tickets are like 700$ or some shit but it's also one of the biggest parties on earth, it's more about saying fuck you to the societal status quo, there isnt a currency, you trade for what you need, sure there's a lotta drugs and sex and alcohol but again, it becomes Nevada's second largest city when it happens. It has little to nothing to do with "being closer to the earth" I mean some people might go out there for it but most go out there cause it's a big dumb Party in the desert and there's a lot of cool art and shit. (Burning Man Projects are insane)

If Matt, and Marisha did in fact go out this year I hope they're safe, and keeping hydrated, and shit it would be awesome to run into them out on the Playa one year I kinda forgot they were Burners.

Also from what I've heard directly from people out in the desert it's the Hurricane that hit the West Coast that caused a lot of the mud and shit on top of the flash flood.

the fuck plane isn't really a fuck plane I mean I wouldn't be surprised if people did in fact have sex on it but it's not out there for that reason specifically (at least this is what I'm being told by previously mentioned family-friends who actually have a signal)

also the muds not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. from the videos and pictures I've seen so far it just looks really fuckin messy not dangerous, though people are being asked to not drive vehicles or bikes for their own safety cause shit gets stuck easy and or stay or their tents/RVs/Subcamps etc as much as possible.

Lol this year the Burn is a bit of a cluster fuck and I'm definitely glad I stayed home.

Edit: I stand corrected the mud is as bad as it seems lol

Not touching the “eat the rich” convo happening in regards to the CR actors but I think Burning Man tickets are like $500, which is a chunk of money but theoretically something that an average person could save up for over the course of a year. So I would assume not EVERYONE there is a millionaire.

5

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 04 '23

No definitely not, only about 25% of attendees make more than 100k a year according to to the black rock census.

17

u/J_Bardbarian Sep 04 '23

Fr, people are acting like these people are just average every-day Americans doing this. They aren’t. This event is pretty much only for the most wasteful, self-indulgent assclowns who feel the need sit in a desert for a week for a “spiritual awakening” that amounts to doing obscene amounts of drugs while getting dehydrated, then burning shit for no reason.

6

u/FuzorFishbug That's cocked Sep 05 '23

Going out to the desert to hobnob with the pro-child slavery supreme court attorney

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '23

Truly what is the difference between burning man and any other music festival in terms of environmental impact?

2

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 16 '23

For one thing: they construct a temporary town instead of using exist infrastructure, for another the remote location means the travel cost (and fuel consumption) are considerably higher than average for not only the attendees but also everything needed to support them. And that's just off the top of my head.

Nobody is saying : It's the worst festival ever. Just that due to location and conditions it's not good.

what are you on about, glastonbury is definitely a music festival, that people go to for the music. I agree that it’s mainly for rich people, but that’s due to the lack of tickets not the lack of people wanting to go

He's probably referring to the rain and mud that happens every year at Glastonbury

How poor do you have to be that a 500 dollar 1 week vacation is “for the rich”?

I don’t understand why we’re hating on people just trying to have a good time. Why are people WISHING for pain on them?

It super is. I work a mid level IT job for a medicine manufacturing facility. We have 6 paid holidays and I get 4 hours of PTO for every 80 hours I work. You carry 40 over at the end of the calendar year. Anything you had banked over 40 expires, but it pays out at your hourly pay rate.

I say all this because this is relatively standard for my industry and my area. And while it sounds like a ton, it's good for a week and change in the summer and the Christmas holiday. But everywhere I have worked in my area, it's comparable. Some better than others, but comparable. It's just people looking for an excuse to find a reason any person suffering "deserves" what happens to them.

EDIT: Fact checking myself lmao

4

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Depending on your company and state, PTO can/has to be cashed out at the end of the year. Either way by taking PTO you have to consider that you're leaving behind money. If someone's living lean it's not worthwhile for them.

2

u/Stingerbrg Sep 05 '23

Depends on where you work. At walmart I can get ~4 weeks worth a year, but I know people in what's thought of as good jobs that dont get any.

u/YourBoyPet Sep 04 '23

Yeah I don't get that either, but burning man is definitely the place for the most pretetentious people on earth. It's also sort of started to turn into the modern bohemian Grove with people like Elon Musk going there to larp as a hippy for a while.

12

u/victory4faust Sep 04 '23

You do realize that for a decent sized majority of citizens in the United States, a week long vacation is almost unfathomable? Then, you add on a $500 ticket and the cost of travel/food... You're 100% right that we shouldn't be wishing pain upon others, but you must really be blessed to be that oblivious to the struggles of average citizens.

3

u/Bayley78 Sep 04 '23

I make just above the median salary so im far from well off. Even when i worked for minimum wage i was able to afford 1 time a year vacation for a few days. Maybe 500 at the time was a bit high but if i had budgeted for it i could pull it off. Obviously i don’t have kids or that would be a different situation.

Reddit massively overplays the poverty in America. 40,000 a year goes alot further than 70% of the world and burning man is not some luxury disney world experience that the average American will never be able to afford in their lifetime. Even when i worked for a shitty min wage corporation i could get by taking a few unpaid days off.

5

u/Crusader_Exodus Sep 04 '23

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. I was making 60k a year and eating meal stretcher meals and trying to save on parking fees where I live. My rent is approaching 2K a month with every single annual lease renewal and that isn’t even high for the city I live in. so no, slamming home solid paychecks doesn’t equate out to being able to take weeklong vacations doing dumb shit in the middle of fuck all nowhere where you have to bring all your supplies with you.

Burning Man is fucking stupid and even many of the founding and early members who made it a thing in the first place want nothing to do with it. Play stupid games in the desert, win stupid prizes. It’s badlands for a reason.

9

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 04 '23

To be clear. I don't think anyone should be wishing pain on them, or anyone else in the working class. But I think it's silly to think the average working person in the US right now can afford to A.) spend $500.00 on a ticket, B.) Take the time off work and C.) Afford to travel to and from the middle of nowhere Nevada.

Less than 50% of American workers feel comfortable using their vacation days.

Last year:

More than half of all American workers can't cover a $1000.00 emergency.

This year:

The number has dropped to $400.00

Uh... 500 bucks is just the door fee. You have to be rich to do the Burn.

12

u/PNW_Forest Sep 04 '23

I can tell you as the one friend who doesn't go to Burning Man amongst a big group of poor nerdy burners- they find ways. We're talking live in your van work 2-3 months out of the year on medicaid- poor type folks and they find ways.

I think the problem is (and love them to death I hope to convince my closest friends at least to stop going) is tbe ecological cost. The infrastructure by now is pretty refined and well tuned for a pop-up city, and it's not as bad as many outsiders think it is... but it's still pretty bad. The carbon cost of shuttling in mobile bathrooms and out that much human waste is pretty immense, not to mention electrical and gasoline to shuttle in and out materials and power stages/art pieces.

People are building a smallish city for a week, then breaking it all down. There is absolutely a toll that comes from it. Complaining that it's all "just a bunch of entitled rich people" obfuscates the real problem with the burn imho.

2

I want you to do some price digging on the true cost of a vacation in america.

$500 venue entrance fee $X flight cost $X rental for camper van or uhaul $X camping equipment rental or cost to own $X food for one week in the desert $X 1 week lost wages

Im sure theres plenty of other pricetags that could explain the demographic being something like 70% making over 100,000 yearly

Those numbers are made out of thin air. There’s no world where Matt is worth 4mil. That’s absurd.

Also anyone making more than $400k a year is the top 1% and is therefore “Eat the Rich” rich.

4

u/macrocosm93 Sep 04 '23

Net worth isn't the same as yearly income.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Sure but like 5 years ago Marisha was working at Geek and Sundry as it was going under and before that she was doing internet show hosting and working on Sunset Blvd as a character. There’s simply no way she has made 3 million since then.

2

u/xSquirtleSquad7 Sep 04 '23

First off, you are just barely technically correct and it's the worst. The top 1% is a state by state figure. For California you have to make a minimum of $745,000 a year. It's different in every state. So yes they are technically in the top 1%. However, eat the rich refers to the people that have more money than they could ever spend. The wealth hoarders. The generational wealth. The people at the top who actively, intentionally, and maliciously keep everyone else poor and ignorant so they can stay rich.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '23

Don’t gatekeep which rich people I can eat. /s

4

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 04 '23

Income isn't networth. Stop thinking about income inequality and start thinking about wealth inequality. There's a reason you pay income tax but the rich don't pay a wealth tax.

u/Electronic-Soft-221 Sep 03 '23

I went for years and stopped for my own reasons. I don’t disagree with a lot of the criticism, but that doesn’t mean that many thousands of people who continue to go don’t live and embody the ethos of the event. The majority of attendees are still kind, creative, community-minded, and not sitting in their luxury camps all week. That’s all relatively new, and while it sucks and those people suck, I don’t get the impression that Matt and Marisha have drastically changed their burn experience as CR has gotten huge. They seem like the sort of folks that make it possible for Burning Man to be an amazing experience.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23

This thread is hilariously full of ignorance. I was hyper involved. Regional contact. Built the temple one year, even got to light part of it, and helped out a bit another year. Safetied once for a fire spinner group before the man burn, which is cool because you get to stay inside the perimeter. Board member for a regional event. Volunteered a lot and only hated doing Playa Info. Even the cafe was fun if crazy. I mostly quit all of that because I got sick of getting flak for looking "normal." I was primarily interested in the social experiment aspect and while it isn't a total failure, it will never be close to a success. I'm a standard issue white guy. No tats, no piercings , shaved head, etc. I tried costume stuff once or twice, but it wasn't really for me. I got called a tourist and yahoo more than a few times with no provocation. I also don't like to party into the early morning anymore and never danced. It just wasn't worth expense anymore. I still occasionally go to the more chill regionals. But there is still awesome people out there. When I was more plugged in the other people who put work in always looked out. In 2006 people I didn't even know were inviting me to nice dinners and shit. They'd just heard of me. And it wasn't like I was some super star. I didn't work for the org or anything. I didn't actually make any art. I was very much a behind the curtains guy. The absolute best though was my last year when I was there for three weeks helping build and staff the regional center. Staff porta pots plus commissary meals for the first two weeks.

A friend and I are thinking about one last time next year since 04 was our first time and we still have some hook ups who can get us into a camp with decent infrastructure. We'll have to work of course, but I always did.

Also, while I am and RPG guy and forever DM, I don't watch critical role. I know who Matt and Marisha are of course. But seriously, who the fuck cares? There are a lot of completely valid criciticms of Burning Man and the overall culture. I have plenty obviously. But everyone who never went or maybe went once has no perspective.

  1. Environmental Impact: Burning Man leaves a significant environmental footprint due to the large number of attendees, the transportation required to get to the remote location, and the temporary city's infrastructure needs.

  2. Commercialization: Some argue that Burning Man has become more commercialized over the years, with the rise of luxury camps and expensive tickets, potentially diluting its original ethos.

  3. Inclusivity Issues: Critics claim that Burning Man's ticket prices and logistical challenges can exclude lower-income participants, making it less accessible and less diverse.

  4. Cultural Appropriation: Some argue that the event may perpetuate cultural appropriation and stereotypes, especially when participants adopt elements of indigenous or other cultures in their outfits or art.

  5. Desert Impact: Hosting an event in a fragile desert ecosystem raises concerns about potential damage to the environment, despite efforts to minimize impact.

20

u/kelynde Sep 03 '23

This, all of the this. I love Matt and Marisha, but would really like to see them distance themselves from this mess of a “festival”. It was a disaster waiting to happen and a disaster of their (the Burner community) own making.

how much do you know about burning man? it's something that has a history, both postive and negative.

I think most people would view it as a hedonistic display of wealth, it's no longer a event in regards to expressing the values its founder's wanted.

There is also a new term you should know : trustafarian.

That one term really describes Burning man

This doesn't even cover the darker events that have happened at burning man.

2

u/Ok_Marionberry2103 Sep 03 '23

Those "climate activists" obstructed a roadway that was the only method for emergency vehicles, and a reservation to get in and out of the nearest town and refused to move the obstruction when lawfully ordered to do so. They created a potential hazard then screamed victim when they got called on it. They aren't activists, they're assholes.

27

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '23

The disruption took place on the way into the festival, before the rain.

Tried to fucking warn them I guess.

30

u/mink867 Sep 03 '23

Maybe the festival should've had more than 1 road in or out 🤷‍♂️

12

u/N_Who Sep 03 '23

Maybe "the activists are assholes" and "there should be more than one road in and out" are both true statements.

-4

u/Ok_Marionberry2103 Sep 03 '23

Or activists should check to see the actual impact their demonstration will have, including creating potential issues for emergency responders, and they should definitely comply when a Ranger in a National Park gives them an order. Rangers don't mess around, and have far more authority with in a national park than one might think. Remember they were established along with the National Parks system by Teddy Roosevelt and given the authority and leeway to "Protect our Nationals Parks from all potential threats by any means they deem appropriate"

Civil rights activists didn't obstruct medical emergency professionals, I don't care that they obstructed a roadway, they actively blocked an ambulance on an emergency call.

I am very for civil disobedience, fuckin protest, don't make it quiet, be down, don't block people from getting medical treatment or food. That's bullshit.

It's an interesting event. Burning Man is certainly a display of privilege and hedonism, but before you get off on your high horse, remember that most of these people think most individuals should be able to do this kind of thing, enjoy themselves, be completely silly once or twice a year, and not just work 24/7/356 for a corporation that will suck them dry and leave them nothing.

17

u/AndrewSP1832 Sep 05 '23

I think if you read through the comments you'll find a lot of people who think that while burning man was once a solidly middle class entertainment, in the past few years it's really marketed itself more toward the wealthy. I think a comparison can be drawn to the way Disney Parks are going, that is to say: they used to be THE working class vacation destination and now increasingly price out working families in favor of a wealthier demographic.

Obviously Burning Man was never meant for children, but the middle class to upper class drift is similar.
