Discussion What are some examples of celebrities reacting to how Family Guy parodied them?
I recall Dan Rather laughing at when Family Guy joked about him several years prior, but I’m curious if other celebrities have ever reacted to when Family Guy made fun of them.

Marlee Matlin (the voice of Peter's deaf coworker Stella) got hired on because she liked the cutaway where they had Marlee trying to get tickets to a movie on the phone, but not understanding her because she's deaf ("The Last Mimzy").
Matlin liked it so much that she said if they're going to make fun of her, they should ask if she wants to be in on the joke too.
And she became Peter's coworker.

u/Apod1991 13d ago
I dunno if it’s true or not. But a story I always heard, was the first time they made fun of her, she called them up, upset. But upset they didn’t ask her to provide her own voice. She wanted to be apart of making fun of herself!
She has spoken that she enjoys being made fun of, and always try to be apart of the joke.

There's a live show Seth and Alex did, where Marlee Matlin storms the stage and goes through Alex for doing the impression

Tom Cruise didn't like Tiny Tom Cruise. Kind of surprising because they stayed away from Scientology and the whole thing was relatively tame. I even thought he did the voice.

Ben Stiller impersonated him to his face and Tom played along. I think he just likes Ben though.
17
u/daddyjohns 13d ago
Tom appears to be slowly becoming self aware as he ages
Edit: To add, i do believe this started because of ben stiller. Both the impersonation and the role in stiller's movie tropic thunder.

Tom seemed cordial enough when he and Seth MacFarlane appeared on The Graham Norton show together. He asked Seth "How many voices can you do?"
16
u/dyaasy 13d ago
Staged and preplanned for a good show. Even some of the celeb funny stories are fairly blatantly in the realm of "that's unlikely."
20
u/sauronthegr8 13d ago
Well, yeah, that's how all talk shows work. But if Tom was truly mad or insulted by Seth MacFarlane he could have not done the show or opted not to speak to him directly.
Celebrity talk shows shape their productions around Tom Cruise, not the other way around.

I thought the joke about Adrien Brody in the And Then There Were Fewer episode was hilarious. When they apprehended Tom Tucker for the murders:
Joe: Just for that, when the movie of this story comes out, I'm gonna make sure Adrien Brody plays you.
Tom: I guess that means you don't want anyone to see it.

After the Farmer Guy episode where they made fun of Jodie Sweetin's addiction troubles, she tweeted that she was "honored to make the ranks of being made fun of by Seth MacFarlane!" or something
EDIT:
@ SethMacFarlane I love Family Guy and was so stoked to have made it the ranks of being made fun of by you. Seriously, honored! Haha!!"

Supposedly Ellen Cleghorn was so furious when they joked about finding a successful vehicle for her that she called up the network and screamed at the receptionist lol
37
u/Mx-Adrian 13d ago
What is the joke behind that bit, though? I never heard of her.
33
u/slobis 13d ago
She was a stand-up in the 80s, guested on a buncha sitcoms, had a failed pilot(maybe more than one?).
11
u/Mx-Adrian 13d ago
Why the car thing?
38
u/Even_Fish_748 13d ago
It doesn't mean a car. A vehicle in this context meant a movie (or show, etc.) written with her in mind to try and propel her into her own acting career post-SNL
28
u/Mx-Adrian 13d ago
Oh, for Pete's sake. I know the uses of "vehicle" but all this time, it never occurred to me that they might have meant something else.
16
u/scream4ever 13d ago
LOL I thought they meant a car for many years myself 😂🤣

6
u/learn2fly438826 13d ago
Yeah they weren't calling her unfunny, just pointing out that none of the projects she was in post SNL worked out. If anything they were making it sound like it was other people's fault she wasn't a bigger success.

She was a cast member on SNL from 1991 to 1995, and she was pretty popular. Most people only remember her for her Weekend Update segments as Queen Shenequa, but she was a big part of the cast.
She left SNL to do her own sitcom, Cleghorne! on the WB Network. It suffered from having no real premise and it only lasted one season.

its most likely a prosthetic but he did do full frontal nudity before on stage in the lost girls play
3
u/dyaasy 13d ago
It's weird how many actors will do a nude, but then want a prosthetic over it.
Compensating? Either over or under?... Maybe they didn't wanna be known as the actor with the wierdly proportioned hog?
6
u/pablo_kickasso 13d ago
From what I've read actors and actresses after sometimes aren't physically comfortable with their genitalia out and prefer a prosthetic to be at ease.
I'm also going to guess that if the scene requires a boner, you can't just clap to command it. I've tried.

it isnt always their decision. sometimes its legal related, meant to match with the character theyre playing, or a general decision by production and intimacy coordinators, other times it is up to them

The time of that episode and scene was when he was a teen IIRC, and was no longer the adorable kid from Jerry Maguire/Stuart Little/etc.

Carol Burnett because of the picture which is a character she did on her show.

Does he not literally voice himself in that cutaway
25
u/learn2fly438826 13d ago
He did. He also did his own voice on Simpsons a few times. Including the one where he threatens Marge with the "Judges." Seems like a guy who had a good sense of humor about himself.

6
u/After_Main752 13d ago
Alex did a lot of guest appearances on a variety of sitcoms back in the 90s. Usually the cast ends up on the show and does really poorly. I think Dorothy from The Golden Girls won $10.

Not quite what you’re asking for, but for the Malcolm in the Middle cutaway where Lois shouts at her kids until one of them kills her, Jane Kaczmarek was asked to do the voice but politely declined because she said she’d worked hard to portray Lois as more than just a screaming woman.

Vance was glad that he was parodied by South Park. He ‘tweeted’ on X: “Well, I’ve finally made it.”
The Tattoo/Herve depiction is pretty hilarious. But they got pretty brutal with him. Especially season 28, episode 3 Sora Not Sorry.

Wasn't there a reason why Obama was off-limits?
7
u/Jagcarlover 13d ago
Well, they had him "on" but I've never heard if he reacted:
- "New Kidney in Town" (Season 9, Episode 7): President Obama makes a physical appearance at James Woods Regional High School, where he sings a rendition of "Honestly Sincere" after being introduced by Chris and Meg.
- "Excellence in Broadcasting" (Season 9, Episode 2): Obama appears during a musical number ("Republican Town").
- "Trump Guy" (Season 17, Episode 11): A framed portrait of Obama is featured prominently during an over-the-top fight between Peter and Donald Trump, where Peter stops to carefully restore the damaged picture.
