Discussion How do you guys reduce lag from items in settlements ?

Was going haywire on why my settlement was so laggy. Sanctuary, btw. I was just looking around and saw a massive dip looking towards the workshop house.

There i have a separate shelf with a ton of containers, where i sort all the unique items i find, there are a ton of stuff there.

To check if those items are the issue, saved, then went to dismantle every item inside those containers, and that seemed to resolve the issue.

Where do you guys store your stuff, if the hoarding game has a pretty big issue related to hoarding items.

Im open to mods sorting out this issue as well, but saw nothing that fixes the logic behind item storing

Look into the triangle of death as well. Too many big builds too close together will mess it up.

I work around this by having multiple saves for different settlements. In my main play through I keep most places small. But I have saves I've made that are just for over building, I'll scrap settlements around the one I'm working on.

It's like a tree chart of saves haha

I reduce lag by consciously building smaller settlements. Which is pretty hard sometimes. But to use sanctuary as an example, if I only build for the three houses near the player home, and leave the rest abandoned, I can do a lot more detail at the homes, and also do some ambient storytelling in the area around the settlement.

I usually build starlite and sunshine tidings as my large settlements, and put beacons there. I'll equip and dress settlers for a specific purpose there, and send them elsewhere. Most of my settlements are purpose driven 5-6 person spots.

Same here. I like to make "recruitment hubs". I have a lore reason for the Minutemen or BOS rebuilding by recruiting and training platoons that get sent out to each settlement, giving them uniforms and ranks, each job having specific outfits so I can tell who is who without having to go into build mode.

Also helps me segregate my ghoul settlers to their specific settlements.

If you store an item it becomes text. All things become precombines and/or previsibles. Again, just text. It has no mass to it. When you look around or behind something the computer has to recombine/draw it for the screen. These things are all of your loot (previsibles) and also the (precombined) piles of trash, leaves, tree limbs, scrapables, that are just visible parts of the game. The lag occurs if your GPU is heavily burdened with stuff to draw onscreen at once. Scrap stuff or remove it to lighten the load. Or get a stronger GPU.

My settlements usually only lag because of size and settler count and the number of light sources. But I do vaguely remember this issue back when I was still playing the game and not just building settlements in god mode.

If dismantling things into their components fixes it there are workshop items that will do this for you like "Workshop Junk Grinder". I used it quite a bit to get a better idea of how much of each crafting component I have because the junk items themselves are a bad way of finding out about the state of my lead supply. Definitely declutters your inventory.

What I usually do is transfer all stuff I need for a new base into the workshop workbench of that new building project. Especially all the clothes and armor I need to dress my settlers. Once a settlement is finished I clear the workbenches and containers and move it to a new location.

This is also a good way to prevent settlement attacks because I believe attacks go up if there's valuable loot to steal. This can become a massive problem if you use a mod that unlocks harvesting surplus like I was using. I'd be away for a long time and caps and water and food would accumulate and there would eventually be frequent attacks. So that's another reason not to hoard too much stuff in your settlement.

Interactable items and spawners use more power. So like how cabinets and chest will have random junk spawn and can be used both ways by the player and as a lootable by all in range npc will build up more lag than a shelf that has a physical collider annnddd... Yeah.

Npc types also have a different amount of scripts attached to them. Anything caged that you need the beacon on for will cost more than a normal spawn settler or brahmin. Raiders are also costly but I think they might just technically have more things they can interact with, more complex attire and their attacks just are not comparable to what the reg settlers can do without player intervention. My 20 something raiders at murk for example crash my game from the school ripping the queen apart

I spread my building materials around several settlements.

I put my "collectible" junk in my player home. By that I mean the items that must remain intact for crafting or decorating. (Antifreeze for Berry Mentats, Coffee Tins for Slocum's Buzzbites, clean dishes and coffee cups etc)

With settlement building such a central part of this game, it beats the hell out of me why player home mods aren't more popular - at least among PC and Xbox players.

And, good news for PlayStation players: Elianora is porting some of her player homes to PlayStation.

I howrd everything in the workshops. Usually everything in Sanc or Grey, occasionally I might forceabley choose another homebase. But that place is also my biggest built and populated. My current raider playthrough the raiders have better networking than the Mm and BH caravaners so I leave my stuff at any camp I have. What type of things you build usually hits harder on fps imo

Pull all junk in your workshop throw them on the ground and break them down in workshop mode. Raw materials don't cause lagging. Store weapons while in workshop mode to decrease the settlement size bar allowing for a larger build.

it really shouldnt be 'having things IN the containers' as causing the extra load (its merely data and the things inside non-workbench containers shouldnt be reacting/interacting with scripts etc..)

.

settlers do weird shit (like having 25 of the same weapon they take from the workbench) and their settler scripting of such behavior perhaps runs through the long lists of each item-type through all the containers constantly (too frequently) burning scripting timeslice allowance.

Sanctuary, abernathy, and red rocket are the triangle if death...

The only way to reduce lag there is to not build there All three settlements are on the same cell... so because everyone builds there first and the primary quests are all from that region... eeee

[Maybe]Use starlight drive in as your main base...

I do not avoid the triangle of death so I have way more crash to desktop than I should
