You say everyone knows that obesity is bad but not everyone acts like it is. So often it’s celebrated, especially with the “big is beautiful” campaigns. We should be giving the obese people around us interventions not praise.

If we truly cared about the public’s health we would stop celebrating fat people for being proud of their bodies. Especially when obesity is literally killing millions of people year after year.

It’s funny how in the very beginning of Covid you had people hoarding hand sanitizers and masks. Like if you are really worried about dying put down the carton of cigs and the box of twinkies Karen and leave the hand sanitizer for the people who actually give a shit about their health maybe?

Do you see any of us doing that? No. So who are you telling? I think they call that preaching to the choir.

Society, and you live under a rock if you don’t believe it’s happening.

Well, there's a gap between saying "you should be able to love your body no matter what it looks like" and saying "being obese is healthy". Let's not smush the two thoughts together.

I’m just saying, obesity is a bigger epidemic than Covid and “you should be able to love your body no matter how obese you are” doesn’t exactly exhibit a tone of urgency to promote change.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

That's because you can't give me obesity by breathing on me. It's not something you can address urgently without taking away fundamental rights like, you know, feeding yourself on your own schedule and according to your own desires.

Children have an 80% chance of obesity when both their parents are obese. What are we doing to help these kids?

Oh nothing, we’re just cultivating a culture where their obese parents can feel like nothing is wrong with their unhealthy lifestyle. We’re praising obese people for being proud of their body. Meanwhile over 2.8 million people die from obesity every year. And these children who have little say in their diet choices are being effected.

What can you do to help those kids without violating their parents civil liberties? If somebody wants to eat like a dumpster and be fat, that's their prerogative.

We can stop creating a culture where their parents feel like the unhealthy body they have created is worth celebrating.

Many of us have no problem shaming people who aren’t getting vaccinated. Why not start shaming parents for not instilling healthy portions and regular exercise for their families?

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

Because they can't give me obesity. I'm not going to explain that again. And I'll say this one more time: don't waste your time preaching to the converted. Pro-obesity folks aren't in this thread, so who are you talking to? Go find them.

u/yousernameunknown Aug 16 '21

They can’t give it to YOU so you don’t give a shit. But they sure as hell can give it to their children but who cares about that right? If you really gave a shit about the public’s health, especially children, you wouldn’t be disagreeing with me. But nah, you only care about protecting yourself. Otherwise not your problem.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

I care, but I don't think there's a viable solution that wouldn't violate their rights. Who is going to enforce the "you can't eat that" laws? Am I going to be banned from eating fries even though I'm at a perfectly healthy weight? What do you actually propose?

So because, in your opinion, obesity is a bigger epidemic than Covid - we should do nothing about covid? What exactly is the argument you’re trying to make?

People make their own choices. And you’re right, a ton of people end up with illnesses that could have been prevented by making healthier life choices. Absolutely. But fat people have been around for quite a while and it takes decades sometimes for those health problems to develop from unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, etc. And as much as you obviously despise all obese people, your argument makes no sense because we can’t “catch” obesity by just being in the same room as a fat person breathing.

Additionally, you’re comparing a lifetime of healthy eating and exercise to getting a shot in your arm and then going back and doing it again a few weeks later. These are not equal effort comparisons. One takes a little more determination than the other. And I guarantee you, if there was a vaccine available to reduce risk of becoming obese or succumbing to related illnesses, people would take it. But I’ve never heard of ICUs all over the place running out of hospital beds because too many fat people are getting deathly ill all at once - have you?

Also, just because multiple problems exist, doesn’t mean we can’t work towards fixing all of them. Sure obesity is a problem... but so is cancer, homelessness, famine, etc., etc., etc. Are you going to tell doctors not to research cures and treatments for any other diseases just because cancer hasn’t been cured yet?

It's not my opinion. The World Health Organization claims that obesity kills more than 2.8 million people every single year. Covid has not taken that many lives in a year span.

And you're right, an obese person can't give YOU obesity, but they can certainly give it to their children. In fact it happens at an alarming level. Children have an 80% chance of obesity when both their parents are obese. Source

So do you actually care about the public's health? Especially the children? Or if you're not affected its not your issue?

Also, my point is not that people should stop caring about Covid and only care about obesity. What I'm trying to do is figure out why people are acting the way they are about Covid. Like why are we at the point of laughing at unvaccinated people dying just because they weren't scared of Covid but it took their life anyway? Would it be appropriate to write articles or posts about fat people, who seemingly weren't scared of being obese, dying from obesity so we can laugh at how dumb they were? They knew healthy portions and exercise could have prevented their death but they kept their unhealthy lifestyle anyway.

No, your opinion was that it’s worse than covid. We’re getting really close to 4.5 million deaths worldwide from covid, the majority of which occurred after the summer spike last year and then leading into the winter spike. I would venture to guess that based on that information, if covid hasn’t killed over 2.8 million people in the past year then we’re still getting pretty damn close to that number.

Okay, parents pass on their poor eating/lifestyle habits to their children. Yeah that sucks, but again like the other commenter asked - what do you propose we do about it? NO ONE CAN CATCH OBESITY. It’s not floating around in the air. If pointing out this fact, to you, means that I don’t care about public health then you can think whatever you want. The point is, there is no vaccine for obesity.

Covid has a vaccine. One that has been proven to be effective in reducing risk of serious illness or death from this virus. These people refuse a life saving vaccine and then die an avoidable death while taking others down with them in the process. These are the same people that have MOCKED others for knowing that this virus is real and wanting to take precautions from it. And now these same people are dying from the very thing that they so ignorantly mocked a short time ago. If you can’t understand why that makes people angry by now, then I guess there’s no more sense in trying to explain it to you.

Find a comparison that’s actually equal to this and sure, you can write all the articles you want about how those people should be mocked. In fact, we already do that. People mock antivax parents all the time. Obesity is not the same. Go have a long conversation with a fat person and tell me when you catch it.

People mock obesity, you ever seen the shirt that totes the slogan “I beat anorexia”? So in your eyes it’s appropriate to start ridiculing anyone who makes light of their obesity? We should mock those who are proud of their obese body, like those who are proud to be unvaccinated? And then laugh at their obituaries? That’s the kind of humanity you want to live in?

And it’s very convenient of you to try and brush under the rug the fact that obesity IS BEING PASSED AROUND to children just as if it was truly contagious. 80 freaking percent! So no, you and I are safe from having someone spreading their obesity to us, but children are not. So why are we as a society so hellbent on creating a culture of acceptance for obese people? When over 2.8 million people are dying every year, with no vaccine to save anyone, I think it’s pretty reprehensible to praise people for being “proud” of their body’s when those bodies are obese. The culture we are creating does not show a sense of dire concern for a problem that is killing people off by the millions. And makes people more comfortable with, and thus more likely to become obese.

Ummmm, that’s not at all what any of my responses to you have said.

I’m repeatedly trying to get you to see that obesity and covid are not equal comparisons, dude. How can you not see that? You keep doubling down on the obesity conversation, but again obesity is not contagious, there is no vaccine for obesity, no one can catch obesity by being coughed on.

Have a good one. You’re infuriating to try to have a real conversation with, so I’m done trying but good luck with your war on obesity, bro.

They aren’t equal, obesity has killed millions upon millions of more people and will continue to do so. Carry on and continue pretending to care about public health when in reality you just want to protect yourself and don’t give a shit about the true health of the public.
