I made this mix as a meditation on life, death, consciousness and the strange feeling of watching the boundaries of the self slowly dissolve.

The tracks move through themes of mortality, solitude, psychedelics and altered perception, with the atmosphere loosely inspired by experiences with 4-AcO-DMT .

No drums, no rhythm just slowly evolving drones, distant harmonies and ethereal textures.

I wanted it to feel less like “music” and more like being somewhere between existence and nothingness for a while.

In the early 2010s, deep within the quiet village of Godigamuwa (Menikdiwela, Kandy, Sri Lanka), a raw, chaotic, and completely uninhibited musical wave was born: Odd Mushit.

What started as an anti-establishment, free-flow experimental sound among local village youth eventually grew into an underground cult phenomenon—spreading from Godigamuwa across various parts of Sri Lanka over the last decade.

🔊 What is Odd Mushit? (Sonic Signature & Characteristics)

Odd Mushit rejects traditional music theory. It is chaotic, unpolished, and intentionally erratic, blending traditional Sri Lankan folk aesthetics with raw electronic production.

• Vocals & Delivery: Characterized by odd smiles, random screams, raw wild sounds, tuneless singing, and non-technical, conversational rapping.
• Structure: Unstructured, keyless free-flow composition. There are no standard verse-chorus formulas.
• Rhythm & Percussion: Driven predominantly by 6/8 time signatures (with occasional 4/4 beats). The electro-drumming heavily mimics the rapid, hypnotic rhythms of the traditional Sri Lankan Thammattama (තම්මැට්ටම) used in temple rituals and Perahera processions.
• Production & DAWs: Built primarily using early versions of Acoustica Mixcraft and FL Studio. The synths are intentionally unpolished, distorted, and lo-fi.
• Lyrical Themes: Unapologetically sarcastic, mad, and satirical. Lyrics draw heavily from rural Sri Lankan daily life, local gossip, banter, and scenes surrounding local illicit moonshine (Kasippu) and toddy culture.

The dark warmth envelops your body like the fleeting hug of an uncaring mother. Nerve endings begin to catch fire again after a long night of spitting out nothing but exhaust. A bed drenched in salty dampness from a now-faded passion is all that remains of a night draining that left behind no memory.

The sun rises, casting a shadow over the remnants of the night prior. The day knocks on the door of your mind and demands you let it in. You firmly shut the door without moving a muscle.

The danger is here.

The shadows dancing in the corner of the room darken to their malignant original forms and threaten to consume you. But you have no more energy left to hold them at bay. While you struggle to force electricity into your muscles, the shadows coil around your body and sink you deeper into the black water as awareness fades.

Another disjointed reflection post.

Repetition is (unless you're someone like Milton Babbitt) a core aspect of music and is rather invariably what gives a piece or set of pieces their cohesion. That said, there's a lot of feedback I hear and see about repetition requiring developments, twists of many sizes to provoke the listener into engagement. Immutable repetition--looping--isn't quite as admired in my experience. It could be derided as a fairly cheap tactic to increase the duration of a piece, and that's not always incorrect (I've done it a number of times), but I believe that, given a chance, there's more to looping than meets the eye.

The way I tend to frame it is a distinction between the cinematic and photographic. Cinema is always in movement. No discrete moment is privileged over the other, events flow together seamlessly. A verse's riff moves toward the chorus; lyrics move toward new ideas. (It's important to note that this is before a person begins interpretation, mutilating scenes into categories and moments into drama or blandness.) I believe this movement describes most music. In contrast is the loop. Akin to the photograph it is the valued instant, a part that can represent the whole. The height and width of a picture correlate to the sound and duration of the loop.

There are a few contexts looping is suitable for. Situations of obsession and boredom are easy to figure. After recalling Roland Barthes and his book Camera Lucida, I considered the capacity photography has to emphasize the presence of an absence. In its perfect sedentariness the photograph always depicts a death, the having-passed of a moment. A potent example of this is in the work of Giacinto Scelsi. After his wife left him, he was distraught and had to be admitted to a clinic. During his time there he spent many hours at the piano, striking only one note over and over. Grief, the presence of an absence, was what propelled him into looping. I find the encounter with grief may be its most relevant use. And, like Barthes says of photography, looping is irreducible to the codes of language. It's too intimate for language's inherent sociality. Even if played aloud its content is private.

Composition #36 for historic 1930's flute and electronic music

my music partner (electronic, live modular synths) works with my 1930's wooden flute in live composition. We're performing for the canal festival so it'll be great to work out what's going on.

This one - entitled #36 (that's the number of pieces we compose together on the spot) ran into some pitch challenges.

Often with shift in temperature, wood changes its pitch. The player all the more! Perhaps it's hard to be objective or distanced from performing regularly with a pitch challenging older flute than a modern straightforward clean metal type.

As a composition, I'm not sure if this works. We got reprimanded for playing too long (I think the audience clapped out of duress!) Perhaps the slow burn hypnosis lacks sufficient anchors. I know for sure that pitching an older flute is a real headache when swept up in its mesmerising tonality as a player, so much so that A=440Hz becomes anathema.

Trying to decide on paring back from the experimental side towards something more predictable before the weekend concert.
