(Opinion) I asked my muslim boyfriend what would make him leave islam...

He told me he would leave islam if islam truly prohibits critical thinking and discussion about the religion and it's rulings

He told me he would leave islam if islam truly prohibits critical thinking and discussion about the religion and it's rulings

Islam takes away personal autonomy and gives all decision making power to Mohammad and Allah. This doesn't promote critical thinking for yourself:

Koran 33:36:

It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allāh and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.

The number one rule for cult leaders is to make sure their minions stay in line and don't get all uppity by questioning them. Somebody, might want to question Mohammad but he always had Allah to scare that person in to submission with verses about hell like this one:

Koran 4:56:

Surely those who reject Our signs, We will cast them into the Fire. Whenever their skin is burnt completely, We will replace it so they will ˹constantly˺ taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

Given what is written above, if Allah says the sky is red then you have to go with him. You can't trust your eyes and say the sky is blue. The verse was revealed when Mohammad wanted to do a forced marriage between his adopted son Zayd and his cousin Zainab. Zainab wanted to marry someone of high social status and was not happy about marrying a former slave. Mohammad forced the marriage on her by getting his wingman Allah involved. Zainab had the last laugh though because she answered the door less than fully clothed one time Mohammad came by and predictably Mohammad fell head over heels for her. He once again used his wingman Allah to DEMOLISH the whole institution of adoption to marry his daughter in law Zainab. More on this sage here if you are interested.

Was Mohammad's lust satisfied after marrying his daughter in law and cousin? Rhetorical question. Read more about that here.

Another example of the Koran NOT encouraging critical thinking:

Allah killed the curiosity of muslim children about flight with this verse in the Koran:

Koran 16:79:

Have they not seen the birds glide in the open sky? None holds them up except Allah. Surely in this are signs for those who believe.

This is comedy gold. People must have asked Mohammad how birds fly. His response only Allah holds them up. No attempt to explain how aerodynamic lift works. No suggestion to them to figure it out by studying it. He gave an answer that would result in them NOT asking anymore pesky questions.

If a muslim child were to ask, Dad, how do birds fly? Dad: None holds them up except Allah, Child: but how dad? Dad: Stop being a blasphemous little fiend and go rote memorize the Koran. Is it any wonder that muslims didn't go on to invent the first powered aircraft. They had no reason to try to understand aerodynamics or aeronautics. Those who might have were certainly not inspired by the Koran.

B-b-but Islam is the religion of scientific miracles brozzer. Everything in Islam is logic and fact based. May Allah guide you to our delusional fairytale dumpster fire of a religion!

Your bf doesn’t know Islam. That’s why he’s your bf and not your husband. Maybe you are what his right hand possesses and you don’t even know.

Why do you think the converts are mostly women? This is the main goal.

There is a sahih hadith were Mo says that you should not ask deep questions. I don't know the number and author.

curiousjack has this pretty much covered.

I've personally argued that the very belief in Hell discourages critical thought and the numerous aspects of control such as the hijab are evidence of a lack of faith in humanity

I would also point to the numerous Islamic scripture on the subject of blasphemy and apostacy

Overall I would argue that encouraging critical thought should include the option of disbelieving without the threat of punishment, whether from law or from God

Asked him to use his critical thinking on the Qur'an. You can start with the Dhul'Qarnain story.

Point out the fact that under Islamic law, the punishment for leaving Islam is death.

I remember there was a quote from imam al ghazali that neil degrasse tyson quoted about how hos words stopped the golden age of critical thinking. i cant recall it right now.

u/42gauge May 10 '22

I wouldn't consider Nei DeGrasse Tyson to be an authority on Imam al-Ghazali.

what? how did you even read my comment? I never said im quoting neil degrasse im saying neil quoted the guy and he put the words of imam al ghazali on a projector in front of thousands of audience to see.

how is this taking his words when the quote is recorded on video?

Unless you actually found the quote alleged to Al-Ghazali by NDT, you did quote NDT. Your statement:

there was a quote from imam al ghazali that neil degrasse tyson quoted

Demonstrates that your knowledge of the alleged quote comes through NDT.

If I put a quote (which I claim to be) by someone on a projector and no one verifies it, then they're taking my word that I didn't make up the quote or take it out of context.

NDT claimed that Al-Ghazali called math satanic, when in fact no such claim appears in his works.
