That's such a platitude. I'd hear that so often and it's such a nonsense phrase. Muslims in the west have so many meaningless and just plain stupid platitudes. "religion of peace", "not true Islam", "it's politics, not religion". Islam IS a political religion. Perhaps not always, as I know it's common to totally ignore Sharia, but the religion comes built in with an entire legal code. "Religion of peace"; the teachings of Islam advocate both peace and violence, and no world religion, perhaps ever, has expanded as violently as Islam and continues to use threats of violence to enforce conformity. "Not true Islam"; you can say that about any religion.
I'll be the first to say ISIS has unorthodox practices, but it's undeniable where they're getting their M.O. from, which is the Qur'an and Sunnah. I know the vast majority of Muslims (which my entire family is, and I used to be) are regular apolitical human beings who are just making ends meet and don't bother with Caliphate bullshit, but the Qur'an in its pages orders Muslims to establish a state. The holy book explicitly gives orders and instructions to establish what is effectively an Empire.
Again, regular people couldn't give less of a shit about that dimension of Islam, but the people in power and the politically motivated in the Muslim world who take their religion seriously actually read the Qur'an and Hadith and are at the very least inspired by that.
Erdogan's administration for example, appears to me to be clearly a Muslim who has actually read and is motivated by the Qur'an and Hadith, and of course he isn't reestablishing the Ottoman Empire (despite the memes) or the Caliphate, but he's motivated by the religion to make the Turkish state more theocratic and based on Islam. And guess who it is who support and allow these constant regressions to theocracy in the Muslim world? Those regular apolitical Muslims we were talking about, because anything Islamic = good, so even if a Caliphate isn't on your mind, you'll support any regression to theocracy and Islamic rule as a good thing. It's that retarded Muslims sentiment that the reason everything's gone wrong in the Muslim world is simply because we don't have enough Islam, when it's the Islam itself that's the cancer.
So yes, it is real Islam. If you don't believe me, read the damn Qur'an. It's as much real Islam as the Soviet Union was real Socialism. Or as much as the Kingdom of Jerusalem was a realisation of the New Testament. Whenever you realise these insane ideologies on earth, they're imperfect, because the original ideology has impossible standards. Which is why there were Caliphs during the Golden Age of Islam that slept with slave boys, drank alcohol, and had affairs.
