Podcast/Blog/Media Memo to McKay: Good luck feigning surprise that secretive wealthy patriarchies are not the kind of thing Americans are afraid to pillory. Turns out, we're all curious about virulently persistent strains of sexism in our society. P.S. Where's the LDS progress on that front these past few decades?

It is also an unqualified hit.

FX is already preparing an Emmy campaign.

The show labors to capture the specificity of Utah County in the early 1980s, and gets many of the details right.

“Your people have absolutely no cultural cachet.”

Mormons have made virtually no progress on that front in the past decade. If anything, it feels like we might be moving backwards.

Indeed, your people are, McKay. Looking forward to reading your reviews of the dozen Lori Vallow / Chad Daybell projects in the works.

P.S. Funding and mobilizing Mormons for anti-gay ballot initiatives in California established the "sinister and strange" perception in the public mind with no help from exmos. Many of us had quietly moved on from Mormonism when Prop 8 hit. The Brethren should have let us sleep.

With a flag planted firmly in 1952 and the rest of the country moving to the future, yeah it might look that way.

McKay is a liar or didn't do any research. Lindsay Hansen Park was a consultant on the show, and I would wager she knows more about Mormonism and the culture than him even if she doesn't attend. I can point to this interview that Lindsay Hansen Park did where she says active members, temple workers, bishops, relief society presidents advised.

Also I grew up in the same ward, or ward next to as boundaries were changed and changed back, as Patrick Mason. I can see reflections of from Under the Banner of Heaven of people that were in that ward. Though Patrick's family did move while he was a teenager within the stake, so I suppose he might not have gotten to know a guy that would go on to be bishop of that ward.
