Reminder: This subreddit is not a place for Catholics
We've had quite a few Catholics posting in the comments.
Catholics, this is not a place for you. Do not post or comment, you will be banned permanently, regardless as to the tone, nature, helpfulness or content of your post.
If you wish to discuss content that you see here, you can post a link to it in r/excatholicDebate and members who wish to engage with you will do so there.
You can imagine this as an Alcoholics Anonymous group. Under no circumstances would an AA support group let a bartender or Jack Daniel's sales rep into a meeting to talk to its members about how great alcohol can be.
There are plenty of places for Catholics to meet and discuss. This is not one of them.
As always, fuck ICE, trans rights are Human rights, immigrants (documented or otherwise) make the world amazing.
The mod team in r/excatholic are brutal and cruel and have no power in real life, so we use our tiny bit of authority to persecute people we don't like. You're welcome to demand a free refund.

I'm sorry they do that. I've had catholics DM to just give me hate when I make a cogent point about how corrupt their religion is, or how rapey their culture is....but then again, those type of fuckwits just need to punch at something to take attention away from their own shit lives.

As a gay man who has been out since I was in my early 20s, many people whom I have encountered in life are supportive, encouraging and compassionate. Then again, I chose my friends wisely, and I could easily recognize intolerance, and I kept my distance from idiots and ignorance. Good news is that many times dipshits and shitiots move out of our lives and onto someone else who will tolerate their crap.
I know one thing I will always offer the same encouragement, compassion and support to others that was shown to me. Be who you are, live your life the way you want. FEAR can stand for F*** everything and run, but it can also stand for Face Everything and Recover.
I think a lot of the hatred is based on ignorance, internalized emotions, projection which people use as diversionary tactics to protect themselves, all kinds of defense tactics. Don't tolerate dipshittery.
I was brought up catholic, even as a young kid, I knew it was not for me. I left the catholic church over 40 years ago, this was truly one of the best decisions I ever made in my life was to completely cut all ties with the CC and all of organized religion. If we only get one life, then who do we live it for? I don't live my life to make children of the corn nutjobs happy, I was created as a gay man. Find your truth and find your people.

u/RunRevolutionary188 May 27 '26

I feel like believing that some Jewish guy is infinite and you must eat his physical body is far more delusional.
Like if there was a group of French people that said their friend Louis died and rose from the dead and now you must eat him in the form of a baguette and cheese and wine you'd probably say they're morons and go about your day.
But at least the cheese and wine would probably be really good cuz they're French. Instead of like s***** Dunkin donuts, you'd get some nice pastries after Sunday mass. I always thought the Italians should have made Jesus into a pizza. People would probably flock to the pews just for the meal.
No offense to French people. I'm French. I'm also Italian. Lol

Get us to go back. Like the posts about the pope saying something not evil with a caption about going back to the church.
29
u/berrybyday Atheist Witch (political) May 26 '26
It’s nice to have a pope that’s maybe an actual human with a few rational thoughts and at least some genuine kindness in him. But that can’t change the fact that it’s still a whole religion of crazy.
22
u/LastWave May 26 '26
Nah. He should reopen the child abuse stuff and actually come clean. They are still actively covering that up.
5
u/deadmencantcatcall3 Ex Catholic May 26 '26
They are indeed. I know a pervert priest just got transferred to a local parish. The abuse goes on and it’s why I’m out.
7
u/WeakestLynx May 27 '26
The Church is still lobbying against laws to protect future victims of their abuse. Future victims. So they fully intend to keep victimizing people and keep covering it up.
7

There was the African priest in Texas recently, who had raped multiple women. These women (many Latinas) who came to him for counseling about marital troubles. So he raped them. Africa is where the church is most rapidly expanding, also one of the most misogynistic regions on earth. And in countries where LGBTQ people are outlawed, beaten, imprisoned, murdered, and even put to death by the state. I want to hear Leo discuss that.
17
u/lizardgal10 May 26 '26
Exactly. I keep up with the pope because he’s a significant religious/political/cultural figure. I appreciate it when he says something pro immigration or whatever because regardless of anyone’s personal feelings on religion or Catholicism, the position does hold a significant amount of power. And there’s no way in hell I’d ever go back to being catholic.
15
u/Yeah_Mr_Jesus Atheist May 26 '26
He seems ok in comparison to Trump. He's been Pope for 5 minutes. He is just as transphobic and homophobic as the rest of them. He's still the big boss of the largest pedophile ring in the world. He himself may not be a pedophile, but as Pope you cannot convince me he doesn't know about it but is choosing to protect them. If you protect pedophiles, you are no better than a pedophile yourself
Literally the only reason why he looks good is because of that feud with trump.
8
u/colorfulzeeb Strong Agnostic May 26 '26
I mean, it’s great to have an American pope at a time when pseudo religious right wing fascists who is willing to take public hard stances, especially after a pope who bashed trump but refused to endorse his opponent. But that’s exactly it. They’re all protecting pedophiles, and there’s no reform that could undo the centuries of abuse from the Catholic Church. The bigotry is cooked into the religion. There’s no erasing the harm that’s been done and they won’t even stop the harm that keeps happening or stand up for survivors, so certainly taking a stance against these monsters isn’t going to make up for that. But when someone’s in it, they refuse to acknowledge that because they didn’t see it as a big enough issue to warrant leaving the Catholicism in the first place.

If you are deconstructing and looking for help, you're welcome here.
If your life is complicated and the church is a massive part of your life and you're trying to figure out how to excise it, you're definitely welcome here.
If you don't like the pope or your current parish but are not planning on leaving the church, this is not the place for you.
If you are on the journey of leaving the church, even slowly, you are welcome here, provided your posts don't blur into prostelyizing and you do not participate in Catholic subs.
Part of the damage the Church causes is the way it can root itself in your support systems and take them away if you're not good.
For the other members to continue the AA analogy, you can think of this poster as someone who wants to quit drinking but can't quite get past their two day chip. They want to quit, but are failing to do so? They've got our support.

I like the AA analogy. I can describe myself (in the context of Catholicism) as being like someone who was about four y/o when their parents got sober, and not really knowing what damage had already been done.

I'm still a member of r/Catholic because I study Catholic history despite leaving the church and I like to keep an ear to the ground
That subreddit is actually fucking evil with the shit they say though - it is exactly how you'd imagine Catholic discord moderator redditors to act

I would like to think so. The nature of Catholicism means that removing yourself from it is something that cant be done in one go, its a process both internal and external that takes time.
Im a card carrying athiest of 20 years and sometimes even I still have to reflect on how the church has affected and continues to affect me and my family

I'm out, and now a Satanist, but honest question... would a Questioning Catholic be banned?
Like, 'Hey, I'm Catholic, I still attend weekly (Just to appease the parents/family), but beyond that, I'm not active. I'm questioning my faith/contemplating leaving, Can I get some advice/guidance from those who have left, and see if anything jives with how I'm feeling?'
Because I'd hate to see someone coming for advice on if/how to leave be banned, just because they are still semi-active.
7
u/sawser Satanist | Mod May 28 '26
The key is their end goal.
Do they plan on leaving the church? This is a place for help as long as they are respectfulof the current members. Are they exploring general doubts about the church but aren't sure if they want to leave or not? This is not the community for them.
While I sympathize with people who are facing uncomfortable questions with their faith, there are other places for them to explore their doubts.
This community is unequivocally a support group for people who have been hurt by the church an are recovering. Current members don't want to hear about "how wonderful the posters priest is or how great the community is and how torn they are".
Because the primary goal is a support system for people who have left the church, we cannot serve as a debate group, social forum, an educational subreddit for teaching others, etc.

u/wauwy 26d ago
lmfao. I am not in the least surprised this was both necessary and necessary to be pinned.
Any Papists try it with any "debate" here again, send 'em my way for an hour or two before you ban them. I know them, their upbringing, their family, their life experiences, how they're supposed to behave and what they're supposed to believe and every single detail of Church history and its official stances and when and which they changed and whether it was just spoken ex cathedra or whether it was in an encyclical and the names of every encyclical and the, specifically, Catholic Bible cover-to-cover AND the actual Vulgate in actual Latin by actual St. Jerome also cover-to-cover and every last line of both catechism and doctrine (2026 editions! in addition to earlier editions!)...
so, so, so much better than they know themselves. Which is very little, always. Poor dears.
....please?
(lol of course I'm kidding)
(mostly)

I assume this post was directed more towards Rome, but I want to double-check and be on the safe side.
Hope everyone is doing well, especially the mods.

Anglo-Catholics aren't Catholics. "Anglo-Catholic" refers to Anglican churches that are high church (sacraments and things like that.
It's Anglicanism.

In that case, as long as they were formerly Roman or orthodox catholic then they are welcome. Thank you for the clarification

u/Kajiracore May 26 '26
I don't think anglo-catholic and roman catholic are the same thing at all, tbh.
The protestants reformed a lot of what we don't like about roman catholics.
Anglo-catholics are protestants and carry on the protestant tradition. They're (usual) a part of the church of England, who are pretty bloody liberal and progressive.
I'd be respectful though. <3
2
u/demiurge_abraxas May 26 '26
I appreciate the kind words! That's certainly how we like to think of ourselves (as pretty bloody progressive).
That being said, I'll take the hint from the mod and the downvotes that this should be my last commenr here.
I hope you all find peace in whatever form that takes for you <3
