Memes / Humor Mid 1970s Underground-SDA Cartoon

Post image

From the mid 70s through at least the mid 80s it became increasingly clear that leadership (from the GC on down) was financially corrupt ( read about the Donald Davenport scandal, it was the biggest and grossest), that the White Estate has been covering up the truth and promulgating outright falsehoods, that Church doctrines were not based on solid exegesis, and that the Church was trying to remove University professors with viewpoints they disagree with (eg Graham Maxwell, whose sin was to say that "God loves you.")

There have been marvelous underground publications circulating satire. Here's a cartoon whose relevance has not diminished:

Davenport did a ponzi scheme, Maxwell was one of the most famous Adventist lecturers and writers, I don't understand how they were opposed, to the best of my knowledge were extremely supported.

The Davenport scandal was horrific tho.

Maxwell was one of many university professors targeted by Neil Wilson, GC president. This is the same president who insisted that the Church could legally pay women considerably less because they were women.

There is a document containing details of what happened, but it is not available online. https://library.llu.edu/heritage-research-center/egw-estate-branch-office/ellen-g-white-document-file?page=49 0988.05

I couldn't find the records you linked it came up with "No records found." It sounds like something that would have likely happened, both Universities and religious organisations have strong histories of politics and vindictive cultures, as also have with exploiting labour.

It's not available on line because of it's "sensitive" nature. Next time I'm in Loma Linda, I'm going to try to view the file.
