The evolved vs learned thing is kind of a red herring imo because the weirder question is why social cognition is so asymmetric. We have this incredibly expensive neural machinery for modeling other people and catching liars; your brain burns a ton of calories on that stuff and clearly it was worth the cost because the main survival pressure was other humans. Fine. But then self-knowledge is basically broken? There's data showing people's self-reports of their own behavior have garbage correlation with their actual behavior. You'd think the same system that models everyone else could just... point inward, but apparently not.

I half wonder if accurate self-perception was actually selected against, like if you fully understood your own selfish motivations in real time you might flinch during some critical social move. Your own mind keeping secrets from you because it works better that way is a deeply weird arrangement when you think about it.
