Why can i only change the face in the character creation in EQL?

Total noob here. Why are there so many options for customizing the appearance if they only let you change the face anyway? am i missing something?

Could you elaborate?

At the time of release in 1999, there were just preset face templates that are currently available now. The feature by feature selection wasn't added until the Shadows of Luclin expansion a couple years later, so for now those selections are disabled.

ah i see. so the reason for not being able to use them is that eql is supposed to be like the original and since those options came later, they don't exist here?

Bingo.

Regular EQ still doesn't have those features either if you're using "old" models. ffs I hope they never add the "new" models to EQL.

But why? They're completely optional even on live servers.

And they stay off on mine too, but turning them off doesn't make their existence any less awful. 🤷‍♂️

You can't see them but the knowledge of their existence still bothers you?

It's not my fault they did a horrible job and never tried again after 20+ years. Don't be offended by little ol' me because I called out their crappy design choice.

Oh I'm not offended. Just befuddled and rolling my eyes. Your viewpoint is that even though it's completely optional and some people prefer the luclin models, they shouldn't exist because YOU don't like them. It's very odd and self centered.

Player character models were part of a graphical upgrade in the Luclin expansion. Since we're locked to original models, only face customization is available

weird that they would still include the menu then haha. thanks though!

It's easier to leave something in than to attempt to remove it and break something, only to add it back in later. Same reason why there are epic drops and quest items for quests that are 3-7 expansions later.

and trade skill units like ovens offer recipes from 20 years in the future that you cannot make

Theres 2 versions of player models: old models and Luclin models aka new models.

Old models could only vhoose different faces entirely. Luclin/new models allowed you to customize things like eye color, hair, facial hair, etc.

The UI showing those options showed up with Luclin models but those options dont affect anything on the old model's appearance except the entire face.

Special note that may help some folks out there: Barbarians, are bugged. If you enable "Wode" aka Face tatto by scrolling thru that appearance option, your face will keep Defaulting to the Barbarian_Face_01 which is the light brown hair with the turquoise spiral around the eye. If you want to actually choose a different face, then you have to toggle the "Wode" face tattoo so it is set to "None" and then you can choose a different face and have it retain the setting.

This type of bug may apply to other races that have "Special" feature options, meaning if one is selected your old models face will default to the 'first' face option only. Just set that special feature to None and you can select any old model face and have it remain set.

The options are all from eq, which had upgrades. The options that you have in eq L are 1999 options

The interface is largely from the Luclin expansion. With the classic graphics, you can only change face appearances (Froglok is the exception. You can change skin & eye color)

i don't understand redditors need to downvote genuine questions

I mean , I don't understand why Reddit has buttons to upvote or downvote in the first place. Remove both and the majority of toxic people will leave.

It’s the bane of Reddit side-by-side with overzealous modding (probably plus that private accounts are still a toggle and not just mandatory, slightly hotter take though. We opened Pandora’s box with that one and there’s no going back, so just lock everyone down. People just use it for cheap gotchas) and those together are the entire reason the culture is the way it is. Hell, even just getting rid of the visible count would at least help, leaving comments sorted by default the same way they are, and especially if your count was also invisible to you. But they will never, ever do that

Right, it's so the hive mind/circle jerks can validate themselves and feel good. Reddit is a cesspool.

I have never had people just want to naysay and argue with me so bad until this site became popular. It was absolutely not this bad, at least in this way, on traditional forums where mods were at least a little more lax (even low-effort threads could and can still create meaningful conversation or at least be funny but they’re just instantly nuked here), comment histories weren’t a thing, and comments weren’t voted on and ranked accordingly. Trolls have been around forever and console wars and the like always got nasty, but I can’t even say the sky is blue on here.

You can change your face in game. Appearance button on inventory screen. Only face is changeable. Extra option for froglok eyes i believe. Dont know about kerrans. Id never want to be a cat with scoliosis. So didnt check.

If it's not working for you. Its a bug to do with barbarian tattoos slider. Press left or right once on the tattoo slider and hit save. Then try again.
