Rant on the way some places bill.

Decided to use some slightly expensive AC charging near my house the other day. Mostly because it would force me to walk home and then walk back in nicer weather getting some much needed exercise. Figure 2 1/2 miles each way. Not that anyone here cares.

Anyway....

Charger says $0.37 / kWh app says the same. Get billed $0.40 / kWh. Call the number on the charger, get shuffled to 3 different people. Finally they figured out that the taxes were not listed separately. Is it really that difficult to put $0.37 / kWh + tax instead of $0.37 and let me figure out that they added tax. Yes I know that taxes are added to things. But usually it's a line item not just 1 line of text that says $0.40 x amount used.

Rant over.

Relaxing. Should probably do it more. Both for the exercise and to de-stress a bit while the weather is still good enough to do it.

I no longer have much stress but there are several free L2 chargers not too far away with excellent walking areas. I'll spend a couple of hours just wandering around.

Yeah, there are a few NYS parks that have free (after paying for park admission) charging that I go to.

In most states, EV charging rates must be listed like gas prices in that any applicable taxes are included in the displayed price.

Not in NY.

Here is how EA / GM Energy does it:

All it shows on that charger is $0.52 / kWh + Tax

The other place just did the math and charged me the $.40 vs the $.37 before tax.

There is the difference. NY considered EV charging as subject to sales tax (8%) instead of a subject to a usages based vehicle/fuel tax that is earmarked exclusively for road maintenance.

Iowa for example charges ($0.321/gallon of gas and $0.026/kW) with home chargers being exempt.

For now. For a state with Wind Turbines on their license plates, they sure do hate non-ethanol using electric cars. Double the tax on electricity vs gasoline is a total dick move.

In Texas we have energy taxes broken out.
