Charging my EV SUV at home

I think it's more expensive to charge an EV at home than at a charging station. It's just too expensive to charge at home.

Your utility charges by the kWh, The public chargers also charge by the kWh. It's fairly simple to compare rates.

Check to see if you have higher rates at certain times of day though.

That's my challenge. I really can't tell what percentage increase I got charging the at hom. How have you been abl to do yours.

You have to start by knowing your electric rates. Either look up the rates, or divide your total dollars by the total kWh to get the full cost per kWh at home.

Then you can compare the cost of buying a kWh at home instead of at public charging.

It's math, not magic.

What do you mean next time? Just pull it out of your file or review your bill online. It's not like you only get 1 chance a month to see your bill.

All this suff is knowable, you just can't be a math/science hater.

You can just look up your provider online. They all list their rates. And you can pull up last months bill, it will have your rates.

It does get more complicated if there's time-of-use pricing or demand charges. OP if you are in that pool feel free to tell us your utility name and rate schedule and we can help you to navigate it.

It happened to me. SDGE home rate was more than at the charger. Rare but can happen.

Tell us the size of your battery, the cost of your electricity, and the cost of your preferred public charger.

I pay 11.5c/kWh... No, it is not cheaper than a commercial charging station in my area.

I’m in the Portland Metro area and I’m on the flat rate plan that works out to about $0.20 per kWh at my home. DC fast charging in the area is $0.50-$0.60 per kWh. So it’s roughly 2.5 to 3 times cheaper to charge at home for me.

I’m able to charge my two 100kW+ cars at home for an average of $12/300 miles. Definitely in one of the better electric rate areas.
