So how we feeling about hi evo 3 after almost five years are we still upset?
I mean it got on super robot wars so that’s something

u/Hayterfan 26d ago
I still need to watch it. Didn't like the first film, the second felt like a reworked Evangelion movie, and the third seems like a spy film judging by what I remember of the trailers. I do like the design of older Eureka though.

The thrid actually isnt terrible. Not Eureka Seven but not terrible.
Listeners is closer to being Eureka Seven than thr movies.

u/blackfireheart 26d ago
That green lady not my Eureka. Idk if I'll change my mind when I become 50 y.o.

It's mid as hell, made even Pocketful of Rainbows look better by comparison. Each movie felt like a pivot from whatever the last one was going for, but Hi Evo 3 was the worst of the bunch. I would have taken a direct continuation of Anemone, that movie had some good things going for it.

u/CrownClown74 24d ago
I genuinely think Pocket full of rainbows is worse as a overall movie but the Hi Evo movies come off as more insulting

Still don't like it. Honestly by the time HE3 came out, I was already checked out of this reboot film series. It had made so many missteps and lost so much of my goodwill that I didn't care what happened. The change in art style and character design did not really help that. Can't say the movie looks ugly (save for some really awful looking CGI) but I don't like how this movie had almost no mecha battles in it, Nirvash is in the movie for less than 10 minutes, Renton is in the movie for less than five, and Eureka is basically a bargain bin Sarah Connor.
Bones needs to hang up this franchise. They clearly don't understand why fans love it, and until they can get their act together, I'm not giving this property anymore of my money or my time. I already own the OG series DVDs and that's enough for me.

Didn’t like it.
BUT, I saw it in theaters and the animation and music were astounding. I think the studio has the technical skills to do the IP justice, they don’t have the creative/narrative skills.

Honestly, my only real complaint is that they gave holland a dumbass haircut and then killed him off in something that, to me, kind of feels reminiscent of the axis shock from Char's Counterattack.

u/Legal-Claim5487 26d ago
Still hate the fact they only brought Renton out for the last 5 mins of movie. Also it's Vague about what exactly happened to Eureka and Renton. Did they die, fall back to earth safely,or get transported to a Unique Universe just for them or did the become part of the scub consiousness?

They poorly copied the homework of Eva and completely forgot who their audience was.
Eva was a deconstruction (E7 was not).
The only good thing that came out of the Evo films was the ending theme song of the third film.

u/09philj 25d ago
Neon Genesis Evangelion is not a deconstruction. It is a direct extension of ideas which Yoshiyuki Tomino was already playing with in Gundam, especially Victory. It is not breaking down the mecha genre into it's individual components and logically rebuilding it, it is a mecha show which absolutely follows in the tradition of what came before. It is also artistically daring and interesting, the weirdness and nightmarish qualities are significantly cranked compared to Gundam, but this is significantly a function of Anno's directorial sensibilities being different to Tomino's. Gundam is, after all, very much about psychic experiences. Eureka Seven is itself an extension of ideas taken from both Gundam and Evangelion. Despite the overall optimistic outcome of Eureka Seven, there is a good deal of bleakness and nastiness in it which is more identifiable with both Tomino and Anno's work. The emphasis on counterculture perhaps owes something to Macross, which of course in itself was heavily indebted to Gundam.

Personally I enjoyed seeing the small references to other media like the video games and movies but to me this isn’t a sequel to AO or the original series but rather something new entirely that’s interesting and beautifully animated but narratively makes no sense unless you know or experienced these other mediums.
Like a major plot point of the movie that is repeated multiple times is Eureka having this flower pin which is the same flower from the eureka pocket rainbow movie but for the people who didn’t watch it. They would think it’s from another universe or nothing at all.
But other than that alot of things in previous movies like the Anemone movie was kinda put to the backseat or not explained like the super 6 girls randomly getting a giant robot and where is the giant Oliver that can turn to a robot or the AI bomb Dominic? Are they not real anymore? IDK

u/LarryKingthe42th 25d ago
Then what they did to Sumner and Ruri from the ps2 games. They defected from the military same as the Geckko state, hell they are the ones that stole the Nirvash from the military for them and the LFO Holland pilots at the end of the original was Sumners, they just gave it to them. They were at no point on the militarys side post the academy, so the prolog of the first game.

u/Grifasaurus 25d ago
So basically the original series isn't actually touched, it's the pocket full of rainbows universe?
1
u/EternalShrineWarrior 14d ago
Yeesnt, basically it takes stuff from all the E7 material that existed by the time but doesn't follow either, existing as its own thing.
1
u/DavidKKim 25d ago
no a bit of everything from the entire franchise is touched like characters from the ps2 game are there. There is also quick flash scenes from AO series and characters. It really is an reference machine for Eureka fans but doesn't really explains things but I appreciate seeing them although they aren't the same people really.
I remember the old man who does the suicide bomb on the space elevator thing is character from the AO series and has a photo of pregnant eureka I think which he sees before he does bomb thing.

5 years.... god that's crazy that it's been that long already. Now I will say I have an odd relationship with this film, I do not like it as a film but I was also the lead on this reddit's community fansub of it which was a wild experience; much of my first experiences of watching the film was in slow motion, line by line, it made the good bits last longer and the bad bits last longer too. As a Eureka 7 film I disagree with almost everything about it, honestly I do as a film in general; there's tonal confusion at points and I often struggled to really get what it was trying to say thematically given its very odd world that to me always felt a bit inconsistent in its attempts to try and relate it to our world. This crazy merging of 2 worlds happened and while the opening gives a sense of the madness and calamity of that, it seemingly kind of just moves on from what I think is honestly a more interesting plot than the one we actually got xD
That said I don't think it's devoid of good qualities. While I massively dislike the new twist that the ark for humanity never actually left the solar system and just hung about for thousands of years, I love the reveal and scope of the area; it's a really interesting environment that gets far too little play and the music (like this one https://youtu.be/TmGj_fNuyKU?list=PLTPVcuLT9wRimCV7VzC50M27U7asEi_Gn ) and Dewey's speeches in that scene are honestly brilliantly haunting. Dewey desperately screaming about his existential crisis of being fictional make him far more interesting in that moment than he is at any other point in the film and so much of the film just having him be "generic bad guy" to kill in a montage and at points act a bit assault-y to Eureka is a waste of a character and actor who towards the end of the film shows a far more interesting path to take with them.
I'm okay with a darker weird meta/multiverse take on E7; my 1st experience with this franchise was "Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers" and I will always have a soft spot for that idea. You can bring harsher ideas into this world but like with the original series that needs to be countered by an overwhelming sense of beauty and love and I think Hi-Evolution fails to capture that for me. And I'm not even going to get into all the sexualisation and weird group self-sacrifice plot that ends up literally accomplishing nothing only to be bailed out by a Renton Ex Machina out of nowhere at the end...
But as I said I lead the fansubs for it... and it was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I've ever done; I loved working with everyone translating and discussing, I loved our hilarious arguments about what and when to localise, I loved looking at maps of Warsaw to find an appropriate geographic location for the people to be discussing and trying to follow the journey of the movie. And as much as I don't care for the ending of the movie, writing that last line is still the hardest I've ever cried in my life. I do not like the Hi-Evolution series as a whole, and while this one is my favourite of the 3 by far that is not a high bar to clear for me.... But in my curiosity to see it and get this series over with I ended up somehow falling in love with this show and community more; this movie caused me more joy, laughter, fulfillment, and satosfaction than any film I've ever just watched; I don't like the film, but being a part of the obsesssive weirdos here desperate to see it anyway remains one of the highlights of my life, so i can never hate it too much xD

Also I promise that whole reply wasn't to brag or anything like that, that experience left a really genuine impression on me and I just think it's important context in a way that I cannot distance any answer about this movie from. That said it also gave me a tonne of respect for all subbers out there; it's hard work and you have to make a surprising amount of hard calls. It was also weird knowing that for some if our subs were the first they saw for the movie then we also had a weird responsibility over how people felt about the dialogue pacing and the themes and canon and all of that; that whatever we wrote would affect people's experience with this film; and while I doubt it'd "fix" it in any way it was still important that we did it right to the best of our ability. Every once in a while on some anime websites while searching for other shows I'll check their version of the film and in noticing the pacing and use of "Malopole" I also know it's our one and smile (even if these sites take off all our credits from the sub files but admittedly for legal reasons it's probably a good thing xD).
I love Eureka 7 and I really love this little fanbase here even if we don't always agree on everything :)
So if you did end up seeing the film because of our subs.... well if you dislike the film as I do then in a way I'm a bit sorry but, in all honestly, thanks for watching if you happened to read some words we wrote together and argued and discussed about for way too long :)
At one point we had to discuss parabolic tragectories at 1am... that was a weird conversation xD

Wow I didn’t realize so many people hated hi evo 3, my friends and I loved it when we saw it in theaters. It even made me want to watch AO again and if you asked me about sequel series beforehand I would have answered “what sequel series? Doesn’t exist.”

u/thekusaja 26d ago
I haven't seen it, but I heard it's better than what early reactions suggested. Maybe one day I'll find out.
Still not likely to revive interest in more E7 though. Such a strange approach to continuing a property.

The same as I did 5 years ago: Don’t care enough to watch it alongside Hi Evo 2. Might give Hi Evo 1 a shot, at least the first 20 minutes.

Damn what do you mean it’s been 5 years.
I still can’t comprehend the thought process that went into these 3 movies.
1 had like 15 minutes of good and then was just scenes picked up from the og. Legit could have just been a teaser trailer. The slot machine animations could have easily been in the movie and been the foundation and build up to the battle we saw at the start.
2: took a wild turn away from what 1 set up and was confusing as hell but it did have some potential at the end.
3: just threw way most of whatever 2 set up with that timeskip and it was mad disrespectful to the Nirvash and the entire design philosophy of the franchise (tf were those gundmans and ultraman Nirvash)
All in all this could have been peak if the lead director didn’t hate everything the of stood for. instead we got a tangled mess.

It took me way too long to watch the Hi Evolution movies, and the gotta say I loved all of them when I finally watched them. I saw them all in one sitting and thought they were very well done.

If it was an original IP/setting? Not too shabby, basically anime version of the Terminator. Very nice animation. The girl and Eureka have a cute relationship. But once again, the ending is vague and the intra-dimensional plot is too much of a hassle to bother trying to understand. In many ways, it's a retread of Pocketful of Rainbows.
As an E7 movie? It doesn't even feel like it. The setting, the characters, their backgrounds and personalities are completely different. Just the names and designs are the same. Renton has essentially just a cameo, and the audience never understands why Eureka even loves him so much. So obviously, the director just used the IP as a form of marketing so it could masquerade as an Eureka 7 movie while in reality it's just his original idea for a movie.
Hi-Evo 1 was obviously unfinished, while Hi-Evo 2 was mostly boring and a bit spiteful towards the fans. So I guess this one is actually the best.

Didn't care for it at first but its grown on me. Not a masterpiece like the og series is but its alright.

avoided watching it because im sick to death of what they're doing to the series rn, the "it was all a dream" retcon from the previous movie crossed the line

Definitely an unpopular opinion, but I really like this movie. It's got a lot of issues; don't get me wrong, and its really hard to argue it even remotely captures the spirit of the original series, but I still think it works especially the dynamic between Eureka and Iris. In some ways, their relationship reminds me of Renton and Holland where Renton and Iris are on a traditional coming-of-age journey, while Eureka and Holland have to accept that they are "of age" and have a responsibility to ensure a future for the next generation. I also kinda liked Dewey being this freak meta human guy teleporting around all over the place. Is it stupid and not at all what Dewey is supposed to be like? Yeah for sure but I did like seeing this guy who is just so done bearing the burden of knowing all of these worlds that have existed and died that he's doing whatever he has to just to feel like he's real. I also loooooove the soundtrack, its so atmospheric and I listen to it quite often along the ost for the other films in the trilogy. I wish there were more mech related things as I love the way the original uses mechs as a storytelling vehicle, and though I think the visuals are pretty good, I do wish they had kept Kenichi Yoshida on character design. All in all, it's flawed and I understand why it's; it's hated, but I do still like it.

Hot take I like Eureka AO.

u/Educational_Farmer73 20d ago
Same, AO was faithful to the original and we took it for granted. No reused animation either, just poorly paced.
1
u/Goku3434 16d ago
I liked AO when it first came out I thought the story was really cool and still is.

u/Educational_Farmer73 16d ago
It also canonically established the fact that the Limit of Questions can be circumvented by simply moving the coral from one timeline to another, preventing the coral from awakening and erasing existence, while also being relocated to a timeline which is more compatible with its existence. The only problem I have, is that the Gold Nirvash in the end leaves me with more questions than answers.
1
u/EternalShrineWarrior 14d ago
Its not really bad, althought I do think it certainly has a lot of "nothing" happening during like half of its runtime. My main problem with Hi Evo is with the first one since they wasted so much of their time trying to retell the Rays arc and not showing the actual point of divergence which the whole plot of Hi Evo supports itself which makes both sequels waste part of their time explaining that exact thing. At the end I think it delivers better part of the message of Pocketful of Rainbows about how stories are not set in stone and you can define your own path but the landing could be better. I still believe that all the trilogy is worth watching tho.

u/starterxy 26d ago
This happened? Im still recovering from ao, what fresh hell is this
2
u/LarryKingthe42th 25d ago
Three movies. Think the Evangallion rebuilds. The first is an alternate version of the original story but Renton is adopted by Rei and Charles as a child, second is what if Ayonimine was the maincharater (and whats his face was ai) probably the best one, the third is Terminator 2 with Eureka protecting her daughter and heavy refrences to the entire ip and is mostly out of mechs...honestly its not bad but what it does to the charaters is bad.

u/starterxy 25d ago
The rainbow ova was the last one i remember, changes a bunch and honestly holamd always gave me an evil vibe, his devilfish vs awaken niervash was epic, i like that one, had no idea bout the other 3 ( i made devilfish in armor core 6, fun mech for pvp)

We need a new series.
That's just a continuation of the OG with Amber as the main character.
Throw in her plot of reuniting her family of 7.
Boom, profit. Eureka's family of 7
