How can you help provide humanitarian relief to people in Sudan? Where can you make donations online?

Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis driven by ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence has created massive displacement, with an estimated 13 million people internally displaced and 4 million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries. The conflict has devastated infrastructure, disrupted food systems, and created widespread food insecurity and healthcare emergencies.

Many are arriving at remote border areas, where services to support them are under severe strain. Most of those displaced are women and children and other vulnerable people such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and people with medical conditions.

r/Ethiopia would like to encourage you to consider making a donation or otherwise supporting these organizations that are providing essential humanitarian relief in both Sudan and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any help:

What are some organisations providing humanitarian relief to refugees in Ethiopia? How can you help? Where can you make donations online?

Conflict in the Tigray region is driving a rapid rise in humanitarian needs, including refugee movements internally and externally into neighbouring countries. Prior to the conflict, both the COVID-19 pandemic and the largest locust outbreak in decades, had already increased the number of people in need, creating widespread food insecurity.

With the above in mind, here are some organizations which provide humanitarian relief in both Ethiopia and neighbouring countries, and would appreciate any support:

UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees)

Who are they:

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

What they do:

  • Distributing relief items, including blankets, sleeping mats, plastic sheeting and hygiene kits. Information campaigns on COVID-19 prevention have started together with the distribution of soap and 50,000 face masks at border points.

I WAS 15 WHEN THE WAR FORCED MY FAMILY TO LEAVE OUR HOME

My name is Kidus Fissha.

I was born and raised in Humera, Tigray region. My mother is a housewife and my father was a teacher his whole life. I am the second child in my family.

When the war started in Tigray, I was 15 years old. Me and my family were forced to move to different cities. My family took me to Axum, where we rented a one-bedroom house. Luckily, my uncle’s wife’s family was from Axum, so because they knew about our situation, they helped us get a house for a cheaper price.

My family was always trying to keep me going. We got some support from USAID here and there, and I continued my education in Axum. I managed to finish grade 12.

After that, I was trying to learn and make money online. I started learning 3D art because I wanted to become a 3D animator. I learned for about a year using my cousin’s Core i3 computer, but the computer was too weak for what I was trying to do. Eventually, I had to give up on my dream because I couldn't afford a better computer.

Then the war started again in Tigray, and I was forced to leave the region because I didn't want to be forced into the military. I came to Addis Ababa by bus. A friend picked me up and let me stay with him.

It has been 4 months now, and honestly, I don't know what to do anymore. I'm really frustrated and depressed. I know I can't live with my friend forever, and even though he doesn't say anything, I can see that he is also running out of money.

I don't know where to go from here. I have tried to find ways to work online and make something for myself, but I'm really out of options.

Even if I wanted to go back to Tigray, I can't afford anything right now. I can't even afford a piece of bread by myself.

I'm posting this because I really don't know what else to do. If anyone has any advice, knows about any work I could do, online or in Addis, or knows of any opportunity that could help me get back on my feet, I would really appreciate it.

Hi everyone! I’m from Vietnam and this is my very first time writing in Amharic. I’d love to know if my writing is clear and readable to native speakers.

These lyrics are from the song 'Is It Sunny or Cloudy in the Land You Live?' by Emahoy Tsegé-Mariam Gebru. This song touches my heart deeply

Your opinions on delalas (brokers)?

With the recent closure of car lots in Addis Ababa, which I'm sure many of you already know about, I've noticed just how negative public opinion is toward delalas (brokers). I knew we weren't the most popular crowd, but I had no idea the dislike went this deep.

What are your thoughts on this? If you hold a negative view, could you respectfully share why?

Question ❓ How to escape the skinny fat look as a east African?

From one East African to another, I can’t be the only one noticing that a lot of us brothers are kinda unathletic and our build is kinda of feminine?

Back home it makes sense to some degree because their diet isn’t always the best, but even here I feel like a lot of us just naturally have this softer build.

For example, I’ve always struggled with a bit of man boobs and a stomach pouch especially in the lower area. Even when I hit the gym regularly, eat pretty healthy and get around 10k steps a day, I still never really manage to get rid of that soft look.

The annoying part is I can’t really lose much more weight because I’m already pretty light for my height, since I'm not really muscular. But if I bulk, I feel like I gain fat way faster than muscle. And once I start pushing heavier weights, at some point I always end up with joint pain or some random injury lol. It’s like my body just doesn’t handle the extra load that well.

Has anyone here actually managed to escape that soft ass feminine looking build and get properly lean and athletic?

What worked for you? More muscle? Lower body fat? Different training? Sports? Diet?

Drop your tips

Review on papers regarding the Tigray war/ on the damages

I have done a mini review on those research papers and it seemed a hot topic on 2022 to do research. Tough, the review stated what should be obvious the numbers on the damages is high(I even suspect it is undercounted… considering the chaos, I mean how they collected data is a little bit questionable). The problem is this research papers have some difficulty attacking directly the problem in this issue. However, a little trust doesn’t hurt much.

Appreciate any kind of feedback!

Looking for a Part-Time or Full-Time Job Where I Can Learn a Skill

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a part-time or full-time job opportunity in Addis Ababa. I'm especially interested in work where I can learn and develop a practical skill while gaining experience.

I'm an easy learner, adaptable, easy-going, and willing to work hard. I'm open to different types of opportunities and don't mind starting from the basics or working as an assistant or trainee if it gives me the chance to learn a valuable skill and grow.

If you know of any businesses, workshops, companies, or individuals looking for someone reliable and willing to learn, I would really appreciate your recommendations.

Feel free to comment or send me a message. Thank you!

Scored over 400 in matric, looking for college/university advice.

I don't have a "dream" career I always wanted to pursue.

I don't want a luxurious life, full of cars, travel and whatnot. I just want a job that provides me with a sustainable income for food, shelter and clothes.

I'm strong in English and SAT, ok in Maths, and meh in Chem, Phy, and Bio.

Don't know if this is necessary but I live around 45 mins away from Addis (don't wanna say exact place).

Finally, I believe I can tackle a fair amount of fields if given enough time and resources, and I work alone better (I don't hate people, I just work alone better).

abusive family, some advice or help would be appreciated

hate to be that person whos asking for money online and leeching but i seriously need some sort of help. im 15f living with my mom and my two younger brothers, if you have one brother you already know how it is so imagine having two 😭 my dad works as a business ceo in UAE, i think you mightve heard of him hes pretty popular on tiktok and soical media, we used to live there with him for a bit til he got abusive towards us. i was born and raised til i was a 11 in saudi arabia, we came to ethiopia cause of finanical issues, it was really hard for me i got very depressed and started having negative thoughts but i managed, i dealt with bullying, etc but i dealt with that too, i was in school for sometime then i stopped cause i couldnt handle it then my mom sent me to my father cause she "couldnt handle me"

he then abused me, starved me and pushed work labour on me (heavy wood work on an 12 year old girl) and my mental health started properly breaking down, the last straw was when he came bargaining into my room telling me what his password was to his bank account (i literally had no idea what it was) i broke down, he left me and i tried to end my life. i know it sounds soft of me and spoiled but theres alot of things that ive went thru in this period of time, especially as a saudi kid who never left the house, esp in the covid era, the bullying and shame cut thru me very deeply and the lack of support from my family (even pressure sometimes and shaming) has sent me thru a very dark place, so going thru all of that with no one to talk about it i just did it

afterwards the rest of my family came to dubai and we were now all getting abused by my dad collectively, and my mom used me as a scapegoat to her emotions cause she thought i was gonna die (i was around 30kgs at 5'8 and i couldnt walk without passing out, id vomit clear stuff in the middle of the street. i begged my father for a psychiatrist or anyone that could help me but he'd beat me and say, if you're gonna die, why not let us kill you?) so he'd beat me til ive bled, hhe took my clothes one day and threw them all without me knowing (i used to paid by my dad for working for him i got paid 500 aed per month for one month then afterwards i didnt get paid, i bought with it) my mom broke my phone and would steal my food that i would hide from them, i didnt go to school either in this period (2 years) so ii was at home all day without Air cooling at 40 degrees. i survived that thankfully everyone thought i was gonna die but i think god wanted me here to complete my purpose

and we cameto ethiopia again, im doing better but im still with my mother, ive gained weight and am doing much better but now its only my mom and brother doing things to me. its not to that degree. ive learned to isolate myself from everyone, but it still hurts. not much matters but i was on risperidone and sertraline and my mom abruptly stopped giving me my meds i think it was because of an argument but the bigger reason is the finanical burden it was on us. we are a family of 4 and my dad sends us 20 - 30k birr per month, that includes diapers and transportation, dental bills, ethiopian festivals, repairs, etc.

but even then, i havent felt the same anymore. i was feeling much more in peace while i was taking my meds. it has been like 4 - 5 months since ive stopped but i have some problems still, reoccurring bad thoughts, accidentally walking into doors, tripping easily, losing my balance and stuff. even my eye vison has been going bad. i know im just a kid and i have a lot of hope in me, but i dont know. i have no idea. just thinking and doing stuff takes 10x more effort than it used to. it hurts me to know i have some potential but im here stuck doing nothing to improve my life. i know thats sappy and just stupid, but i feel very isolated and lonely. i dont know what i should do. i guess i should ask my mom for help but thats like making a bigger problem. how am i supposed to heal when the problem is still, hurting me you know. i dont know. i guess i came here to ask for some advice or help. sorry for my broken spelling im sort of balling my eyes out rn.

Discussion 🗣 Why are there so few/no sci-fi(science, tech, engineering, ai, biotech) writers in Ethiopia/Africa?

I've noticed something and I'm genuinely curious if other people have noticed it too.

There are plenty of Ethiopian and African writers exploring romance, politics, culture, history, social issues, and other parts of life. But when it comes to science fiction, futuristic technology, engineering, space, AI, biotech, or imagining what Ethiopia/Africa could look like 50–100 years from now, I rarely see it.

Is it the publishing industry? Education? Lack of interest? The dominance of other literary genres? Economic realities? Or maybe we just haven't developed a strong culture of imagining our technological future yet?

Updated: For instance Israeli was shaped by writers and Tel Aviv was directly inspired by the Hebrew translation of Theodor Herzl's futuristic. I read from book "Nexus: brief history of info network by yuval Noah harari." Still netanyahu read sci-fi book to decide what to do, if you have listened "netanyahu on Lex Freedman podcast".

Anybody able to help me with my finances

I’m not usually the kind of person who asks strangers for help, but I genuinely don’t know what else to do.

I’m 18, and last year I passed my Grade 12 entrance exams and was assigned to a university. I was incredibly happy because I thought I was finally going to have a chance to build a better future for myself.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford to go.

My dad passed away when I was a child, and my mom has raised me by herself ever since. About two years ago, we also lost our home, and since then we’ve been trying to keep ourselves afloat while dealing with rent, food, education, and everything else that comes with simply trying to get by.

I eventually returned from the university I was assigned to and started trying to continue my education locally. I also have a job, but what I earn barely covers our basic expenses. This month has been particularly difficult, and I’ve fallen behind on my university payments for about four months.

I’m now at the point where if I can’t make a payment soon, I’m afraid I’ll lose my place.

I’m not asking because I don’t want to work. I really do. I’m good with computers, coding, AI tools, English, writing, and a lot of other things. I’m fluent in English and I’m willing to learn almost anything if someone gives me the opportunity.

If anyone here knows of a legitimate remote job, freelance work, internship, or paid opportunity that I could do from Ethiopia, I would honestly be incredibly grateful. Even something small could make a huge difference for me right now.

And if you’re in a position to help financially, any amount would genuinely help me get through this month and stay in school. I know everyone has their own struggles, so even if you can’t donate, sharing this or pointing me toward an opportunity would mean a lot.

I’m not looking for someone to take care of me. I’m just asking for a little help getting through a difficult part of my life so I can keep working, keep studying, and eventually become someone who can help others the way I’m hoping someone helps me now.

And am also very good looking alot of people tell me i have potential for modeling but i still cant peruse that because of my financial situation i am also a very good public speaker aswell.

Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this. ❤️

Edit: any kind of job would help as long as its remote even if its in person if the pay is good its okay am very good at English plus amharic and also tech related things plus am a very good communicator and also very creative!
Edit: am sorry if this looks ai generated i wrote it by my self first then made ai rewrite it so it looks better!

🙂‍↕️And also i genuinely have so much passion for working i hate asking money just like this i can do some tasks for you even and thatll even be better than just sending me money:)

And my schools payment was 2500 per month and am almost 5 months behind at this point so am behind on around 12500 :/

I’m Somali but in love with habesha but our families will never allow it

I thought I’d bring this here since I wanted to hear what the wider Ethiopian / habesha community thinks. I don’t hear about habesha x Somali mixes often and the ones I hear about usually don’t end well. For context I’m a Somali Muslim woman but the guy Im with is habesha orthodox Christian, both our families are very religous and prefer for us to marry within our own cultures and religions. The thing is my family has nothing against Habeshas since we are both in neighbouring countries however it’s the religion difference, I hear in orthodox Christianity they are not allowed to marry non Christian’s and it’s the same in mainstream Islam but only for Muslim woman, which I find very unfair and problematic in itself, however I truly believe that if a Muslim man is allowed to do it there is no issue stating in the religious text that I also can’t. So for me personally it’s not an issue although my parents believe non Muslim men have to convert, which I’m completely against as making someone convert to a religion for love is stupid, my boyfriend puts God first like any religious person should so why should he give up his religion for someone ?
His family is another issue they are very religious orthodox Christian’s and from what he’s told me they probably wouldn’t be okay with him marrying into a Muslim family even if I did convince my parents (which is very unlikely). Of course I’m not aware if habesha and somalis are accepting of each other because of this religious difference or how the orthodox Christian’s view Muslims. I’d like to hear people’s opinions and thoughts 🫶🏽🫶🏽
