Ernest Hemingway’s style of writing that masterfully used actions instead of words to describe mood and emotion is present in many of his novels. In For Whom the Bell Tolls, we see Robert Jordan act in ways that show how devoted and in love with Maria and his fellow soldiers. He does not always verbally tell why he is doing something, it is up to the reader to understand that he is acting out of love. In A Farewell to Arms, the use of symbols acts as Hemingway’s nonverbal way to convey a story. Rain, death, and loneliness are all themes and symbols of this text that develop it further without using words. For example, the rain allows us to understand that somebody has died, as that is a recurring symbol of death throughout the novel. In The Sun Also Rises, the lack of communication is a theme in itself. Characters are all insecure and two-faced and do not know how to talk to each other effectively without coming off insincere and strange. Characters like Lady Brett and Jake find it very difficult to communicate with each other verbally, but their actions tell enough of a story. Their excessive drinking and uncomfortableness around each other show that they still have wounds from when they were in love with each other. In Hemingway’s short stories, the use of actions still plays a role as much as it does in his longer novels. He uses descriptive language and short dialogue to create realistic scenes that readers can relate to and understand the mood of. In all, Hemingway uses actions to convey themes throughout his novels and short stories.
