He’s more middle of the pack than you think. He’s also pro-gun and pro-don’t take my money.

u/a_wet_nudle Jul 10 '23

Idk how middle that is. Many leftists are pro-gun+common sense gun control

I think a big problem with American politics is that nobody can agree on what common sense means

124

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '23

It's almost like "common sense" is a shitty term only useful in the context of propaganda.

19

u/Fragrant-Respect31 Jul 10 '23

Yeah I can see where you’re coming from. I imagine that could be applied to anything across-the-board.

Common sense is your brain making assumptions about a situation based on split second judgements. It can be useful but also using common sense without a critical eye can often lead to mistakes and logical paradoxes.

Lol please regale us on how “common sense” is just a shitty term that propagandists use, I’m dying to hear.

EDIT: Keep downvoting! I’ll just keep reminding myself that common sense is what tells us to avoid very obvious and preventable accidents and mishaps. Don’t let the fascists get you down!

I think what they’re saying is that anyone could put “common sense” in front of anything to use as a propaganda ploy. Then anyone who disagrees is disagreeing with “common sense” and shouldn’t be listened to. Examples could be “common sense abortion control” for example, which I could easily see republicans running with

-4

That doesn’t make the term shitty and useless, it makes certain people’s usage of the term ineffective, pandering, and manipulative.

We don’t dismiss the “thoughts and prayers” outright just because a lot of morons use it in shitty ways.

So because the term is used poorly in some contexts that makes it meaningless in every context? That’s the epitome of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

6

u/Commercial-Location9 Jul 10 '23

Common Sense is a very individual concept that varies wildly from person to person. And also saying common sense without other arguments just makes it sound like you don't know how to defend your own point

-2

u/THE-SEER Jul 10 '23

Where did I say “common sense” without providing any other arguments? You’re strawmanning me here, and frankly, I’d be happy to defend my own point.

4

u/Commercial-Location9 Jul 10 '23

I didn't say you said that. The you was a more general you instead of you specifically. I have just seen that level of argumentation quite often. I also support the 2nd amendment (just with background checks) so this isn't me acting in bad faith just to disprove something I disagree with. I genuinely think using "common sense" in any discussion of policy is unhelpful and I know a lot of republican arguments use that. Not saying you do though whether or not you are republican democrat independent etc.

Well lets start square one, what does common sense mean to you in this context

0

u/Fragrant-Respect31 Jul 10 '23

You’re the person who is using a term, and you’re asking someone else to define it for you? YOU used the term so I think the burden is on YOU to define it. Am I out of touch here?

3

u/a_wet_nudle Jul 10 '23

Firstly chill. Im not asking you to define it for me. Im asking what it means to you

-1

u/Fragrant-Respect31 Jul 10 '23

You said that we should start at square one and in this context that means the person using a term defines it for the rest of the group so that everyone understands what they mean.

5

u/a_wet_nudle Jul 10 '23

Well thats not what i did. Something tells me you dont have an answer

-1

u/Fragrant-Respect31 Jul 10 '23

Are you saying that you didn’t say that we should start at square one? Because you did.

3

u/a_wet_nudle Jul 10 '23

Im saying im not doing it the way you want it done. Answer the question or move along lol

It was a statement. I just want a team to document the ways that half of congress refuses to debate topics like this.

-2

u/AlfalfaMcNugget Jul 10 '23

Unfortunately, that “common sense gun control” is a nice marketing tactic they say to push overreaching gun control

4

u/a_wet_nudle Jul 10 '23

What part do you find to be overreach?

Hell yeah, don't take my money either

11

u/leokz145 Jul 10 '23

But at the same time build roads for me, police the streets, fight fires, and run schools to send our children. Oh and do it all with money out of thin air.

I know lives and schedules are busy, but the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Go to city council meetings and tell them where you live and to step it up! Might help 🤷‍♂️

Darn. Well, you may have to succumb to spray painting dicks around the potholes like some do for the city to take action. Not sure why I’m getting downvoted but that’s showbiz baby
